Earthquake jolts Islamabad, upper parts of KP

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on Richter Scale hit Islamabad and upper parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa at 1:35am on Saturday.

The shocks were also felt in other parts to the country including, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Abbottabad, Chitral and Malakand division.
The epicenter of the quake was in Koh-e-Hindu Kash. No casualty was reported from any part of the country.

ANP backs nationalists, PPP vows counter-strike on 13th

The strike has been called for restoration of local government system in Sindh.

Addressing a news conference at the Mardan House, he said that every conspiracy against Sindh will be foiled.

The ANP leader also appealed to the transporters and businessmen to support the strike and not carry out their routine activities.

He said that the role of Sindh nationalists regarding provincial autonomy cannot be forgotten.

Differences between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government and Sindh nationalist parties are increasing over restoration of the local bodies’ system.

According to details, the Sindh government has decided to reply strongly to the nationalists who are opposing the Local Government (LG) system.

The government has also decided to stage protests against the nationalists.

Meanwhile, PPP leader Zulfiqar Mirza bitterly criticised the Sindh nationalist leaders, saying they are opportunists.

Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) Chief Pir Pagara also said he would play a role to bridge the divide between rural and urban Sindh.

Backing the viewpoint of nationalists, Pir Pagara said his ancestors rendered sacrifices.

Militants attack NATO truck in Pakistan, kill driver

PESHAWAR: Taliban militants in northwest Pakistan attacked a NATO supply truck before dawn Thursday, killing the driver and damaging the vehicle, police said.

Militants opened fire on the vehicle with assault rifles in Suki village in Mardan, police said, a district neighbouring the northwestern capital Peshawar.

The driver’s assistant told police they had loaded the truck in Karachi with a 10-wheel vehicle destined for NATO troops and were en route to Kabul.

“The driver was killed on the spot. It was a NATO supply truck and was carrying a 10-wheel vehicle for NATO in Afghanistan,” Iftikhar Khan, a police official in Mardan, told AFP by telephone.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack but intelligence officials blamed the Taliban.

Four miscreants killed in Mardan

As many as four militant have been killed during an ongoing military operation in Mardan, Dunya News reported on Tuesday.
Security forces have nabbed over a dozen terrorists during an operation underway at the mountainous range of Buner and Swabi in Katlang since yesterday. Some four militants have been killed in fresh clashes.
The military resorted to heavy gunship besides Cobra choppers in the offensive.

MARDAN: Security forces on Monday launched a fresh operation in different parts of Mardan against suspected militants.

According to sources, army and police are conducting a joint operation in Kandao and Galibagh areas in a bid to arrest militants believed to have been hiding there.

Floods likely to delay anti-Taliban moves

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Pakistan’s devastating floods are likely to delay army offensives against Taliban insurgents, the US defense secretary said on Friday, possibly giving militants chances to intensify attacks.

The US-backed government, overwhelmed by one of the worst natural disasters in Pakistan’s history, already faces renewed Taliban violence.

The al Qaeda-linked Taliban took responsibility for triple bombings at a mourning procession in the city of Lahore this week, challenging the civilian government further.

“Unfortunately the flooding in Pakistan is probably going to delay any operations by the Pakistani army in North Waziristan for some period of time,” US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in Afghanistan where he is visiting US troops.

Mardan: Suicide attack on Ahmadi worship place foiled

MARDAN: A deadly suicide attack on an Ahmadi worship place in Mardan has been foiled by security forces, SAMAA reported on Friday.

According to details, a suicide attacker tried to enter an Ahmadi worship place situated in the Muslimabad area of Mardan on Friday.

Security personnel vigilantly interrupted the suicide attacker and did not allow him to enter the building.

The suicide attacker, seeing no way to enter or retreat, blew himself to death in a final, desperate move.

A passerby was killed in this incident, along with the suicide attacker. Police and rescue teams rushed to the scene and transferred the dead bodies to a nearby hospital. The area was cordoned off by the forces.

Floods in Mardan and Swabi

MARADA/Swabi Pakistan: Almost 20 people confirmed dead as floods wreak havoc in Mardan and Swabi areas while powerful stream of floods took away 5 persons in different areas of Azad Kashmir.

Nine persons went missing in Garyala, 2 in Kaganau camp and 2 in Balagarhi area of Mardan while in Ismailia area Swabi 2 persons are missing.

The deaths mainly occurred due to collapsing of roofs as a number of villages were inundated and fields damaged when floods hit the above areas.

A wide area came under water as floods made their way in Mardan and Swabi where 400 houses have collapsed so far.

Thousands of people are trapped in the flood-hit areas and efforts are underway by the locals and welfare organizations to shift them to safer places.

Ismailia, Kalu Khan, Khat Kalay, Sheraghand and Nazar Kalay areas of Swabi are worst hit. Fields of corn, rice, sugar cane and tobacco have also been damaged in Swabi and Mardan.

The heavy floods have also swept away Kalu Khan bridge in Swabi while the communication network has been severely damaged.
