Dengue patient dies overnight; overall death toll at 27 in Lahore
LAHORE: A woman infected with dengue virus overnight passed away, raising the overall death toll to 27 in the metropolis, TrendPK reported Friday.
Meantime, 521 people were tested positive for dengue during last 24 hours in the city.
The number of dengue patients exceeded 5510 in Punjab; of them, 4619 ones belong to Lahore.
Meantime, experts from Sri Lanka were given briefing at Institute of Public Health, Lahore. The head of the Sri Lankan team Dr. Hasitha Tissera said they would offer every possible support to Pakistanis at this critical juncture.
Punjab Health Department claimed patients were fast recovering at government hospitals, adding people inflicted with dengue fever were being given free of cost medical care at government and private hospitals. TrendPK

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry has directed Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) to obtain detailed text of the robust statement of senior Sindh minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza which the latter stated addressing a press conference in Karachi on Sunday afternoon, TrendPK reported.
SC is all set to hear suo motto case concerning fresh spate of violence and target killings in metropolis at its Karachi Registry today (Monday).
Meanwhile, stern security arrangements have been adopted in and around SC’s Karachi building to ensure peaceful and secure hearing of the case.

Aman Committee’s new leaders have no criminal past: Mirza
ISLAMABAD: Sindh’s Senior Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza Tuesday said the people who took charge of People’s Aman Committee following the death of Rehman Dacoit, had no criminal record whatsoever.
Talking to media on arriving in the federal capital, firebrand Mirza stressed there was no point in beating the drum of Peace Committee, stressing actual reasons of restiveness in the metropolis be made public.
Defending Aman Committee, Zulfiqar Mirza remarked People’s Aman Committee had no existence now, as its leaders had announced to abolish the organization after it was banned.

Empress Market fire under control

KARACHI: The fire that gutted Empress Market in the wee hours of Sunday, has been brought under control this morning; however, dozens of shops burned to ashes.
The conflagration broke out overnight in Karachi area of Saddar and before long, it gulped down several shops with flames billowing out in tall plumes, gutting goods housed at the dry fruits shops worth million of rupees.
The blaze was so intense that fire tenders from across the city had to be called in with police and the Rangers in large number cordoned the entire affected site.
Fire brigade crew said it was dry fruits shops that first caught the fire and then it widened its sphere, adding they faced difficulties owing to prevailing darkness.
The owners of these gutted shops also arrived on the spot only to helplessly watch their shops burn to ashes.
City District Government’s EDO Municipal Services, Masud Alam said it was premature to say for sure about the reason of the fire.
It should be mentioned here that Empress Market is one of the largest retailers’ markets of the metropolis; but, this market does not have a door to allow fire-tender in. The government needs to build emergency gates in large markets to avert any big loss in the event of fire. TrendPK
Four lose lives in Karachi violence
KARACHI: At least four people including a woman were killed in the ongoing spate of violence and firing incidents in the metropolis.
The string of firing incidents which erupted abruptly in the city, seems to have come to a halt, as a let-up in the situation is being currently witnessed; however, the citizens are still distressed.
At least two bodies including one of a woman were retrieved from Bhains Colony area of Sukhan yesterday morning. Both the deceased were kidnapped, tortured and hanged to death.
Meantime, body of a youth was recovered from under Teen Hatti Bridge. The youth was shot to death after torture. However, all three deceased could not be identified as yet.
Funeral prayers for the eternal peace of former UC Nazim Muhammed Haneef of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), were offered near City Court. He was targeted near Paan Mandi area of Risalah a day ago. MQM’s office-bearers and workers attended the prayers in large number. In the meantime, local residents staged a protest against incidents of target killing.
Later on, Haneef was laid to rest in Yaseenabad cemetery.

KARACHI: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Special Investigation Police on Tuesday rounded up five suspected terrorists, including Taliban’s Karachi chief.
Acting on a tip off, police conducted raids in different parts of the metropolis, arresting five key Taliban activists. Explosive material, suicide vests and automated weapons were recovered from their custody.
According to police, the terrorists were plotting a major attack in Karachi.
SSP Umar Shahid told newsmen that four terrorists, Muhammad Omar, Barkatullah, Amanuddin and Ahsanullah, had come from Waziristan.
