World Cup 2010: Eurovision left trailing as England’s songs hit new low
England fielding grim bunch of contenders to become the World Cup song for South Africa 2010.
On Saturday evening the Eurovision Song Contest reaches its seasonal nadir.

Watching its glitterball excesses over the years, I have long laboured under the belief that in no other field of human endeavour can so much effort, time and money be expended for so little return. Every year, thousands of man, woman and somewhere-vaguely-in-between hours are lost in the cause of coming up with a trans-continental hit record that might linger in the memory rather longer than a circuit of his bowl does in the mind of a goldfish. Yet in 50 years of trying, only Abba’s Waterloo has managed to achieve the feat.

However, after spending an hour of my life trawling the internet this week, I realise the annual bing-banga-bonga-thon has a rival. Indeed, it is possible that not even Eurovision can compare to the magnificent creative futility that is the four-yearly attempt to come up with the definitive World Cup song.

Perhaps fearing that the tastes of the current squad veer towards gangsta rap rather than Mantovani, there is no official number featuring the players this time round. Indeed, there hasn’t been one in 20 years.

The closest we have is a former national team coach, Terry Venables, taking on Elvis’s If I Can Dream, accompanied by the London Philharmonic, which is being used to promote The Sun on a television commercial sorce telegraph.co.uk/

d37c0b30f7r mets metsNEW YORK – Mike Pelfrey and the New York Mets zeroed in once again.

Pelfrey and the Mets bullpen pulled off a most extraordinary pitching feat in this big-hitting era, shutting out Philadelphia for the third straight game Thursday night and handing the flailing Phillies a 3-0 loss.

Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and the NL champions got swept in the series without scoring a single run — it marked the first time since 1983 that Philadelphia was blanked three days in a row.

“Luckily, we were able to keep it going,” Pelfrey said.

Pelfrey (7-1) and a pair of relievers held the Phillies to four singles while winning their fifth consecutive game. The big right-hander followed top efforts by knuckleballer R.A. Dickey and Japanese newcomer Hisanori Takahashi as the Mets threw back-to-back-to-back blankings for the first time since 1988.

“I think your job is to put up zeros,” Pelfrey said. “I thought I was OK.”

In today’s times when sluggers rule, it was even more amazing. Not since 2004 had any team shut out another club in a three-game series — Johan Santana and Minnesota blanked Kansas City in that set, STATS LLC said.

Santana will try to keep the streak going Friday night when he starts for the Mets at Milwaukee.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s 1-0 or 10-0 or 10-9,” he said. “As long as you win, that’s what matters.”

Jose Reyes, fresh from giving batting tips to the newly crowned Miss USA, was pretty at the plate. He singled and scored in the first, singled the next time up and delivered a two-run double in the seventh that finished Cole Hamels (5-3).

ISLAMABAD : Four players have received clearance to get their visas to travel to neighbouring India to feature in the lucrative Indian Premier League, the nation’s cricket chief said Thursday.

“Our High Commissioner in New Delhi has confirmed that four Pakistani players — Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Misbah-ul Haq and Kamran Akmal — have got clearance to get visas,” said Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt.

But IPL official Lalit Modi had announced that players from across the border would miss the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2010) because they did not get their visas before a deadline.

Butt said he would talk to Modi to try and get him to reconsider.

“I hope they will consider this latest development,” Butt told AFP.

Modi had ruled out Pakistani players’ participation in the league after the Monday deadline for completing all formalities including obtaining visas for the March 12 to April 25 event elapsed.

Eleven Pakistani players — Gul, Kamran, Tanvir, Misbah, Younus Khan, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt and Mohammad Hafeez — featured in the first edition of the IPL in 2008.

The PCB said last week that Islamabad had granted permission to the players to take part in the third season of the IPL, but the delay in securing Indian visas created an obstacle.

Carlos Monasterios

9f6e122269terios Carlos MonasteriosCarlos Monasterios, Big news this morning: the Mets pitcher was Carlos Monasteries in Rule 5.

Do not worry, not supposed to have heard of him. The fun part is that he took in organizing the Philadelphia Phillies.

Monasteries is a 23-year-old right-hander (will be 24 March) of Venezuela, which produces a hard burden of the 90 low. It was acquired by the Phillies in the deal that sent Bobby Abreu to the Yankees, and has performed with mixed results since.

Originally a starter, he moved to the bullpen in 2009 – which appears 29 times in relief and making 8 starts. Of the 37 games, 35 came to Clearwater in the Florida State League (A). He threw a total of 7 entries for AA Reading last year. He had two saves and pitched a Clearwater.

Overall, his ERA was 3.73 last year more than 89 IP, 75 K, 29 BB, 4 HR, 79 H, to 1.21 WHIP. You can see their full statistics here.

Monasteries Personally I have never seen release, so I can not comment beyond what is available on the interweb super highway. Seems to be a very big leap to go from one ball to MLB, but it has done before.
