Guardiola praises character of star Messi
MADRID, Apr 7, 2010 (Pal Telegraph)- Barcelona striker Leo Messi scored an incredible four times as his side beat Arsenal 4-1 to qualify for the semifinals of the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Argentinean showed why he is the best player in the world with a first half hat-trick after the visitors had taken a surprise first half lead.
Both sides went into the game with numerous players missing: Barcelona was without suspended duo of Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, while Zlatan Ibrahimovich was missing with a calf strain, allowing Bojan to start in attack.
The young striker had scored two goals at the weekend and got the nod ahead of former Arsenal hero Thierry Henry.
The visitors meanwhile had a host of injuries, including Cesc Fabrigas, William Gallas, Alex Song, Andrey Arshavin and young midfielder Alex Ramsey, limiting the options of coach Arsene Wenger, who opted to use Mikael Silvestre in central defense while leaving veteran Sol Campbell on the substitutes’ bench.
The 2-2 draw from the first leg meant that Arsenal had to score to have any chance of qualifying for the last four and although Barcelona began by controlling the play Arsenal did indeed score the first goal.
Abu Diaby robbed possession in midfield, fed Theo Walcott and the winger’s pace allowed him to cross the ball for Nicklas Bendtnaar to score at the second attempt after 19 minutes.
That goal threatened to upset Barcelona, but Messi got them back on level terms just two minutes later. The ball fell kindly to him on the edge of the Arsenal area and he produced an unstoppable left foot shot.
Barca continued to dominate and took the lead after 37 minutes. Eric Abidal cut in from the left and his ball into the area was knocked down by Pedro for Messi to control and beat Manuel Almunia from close range.
There was still time in the half for Messi to complete his hat-trick. As the Arsenal defense pushed forward, he ran onto a smart header from Keita before clipping the ball over a stranded Almunia.
With the tie under control, Barcelona looked to control the game in the second half and reserve energy for next Saturday’s visit to play Real Madrid.
Toure Yaya came into the game to close down space and with Arsenal unable to create chances and Barcelona content to let the clock tick down it made for a dull spectacle.
Three minutes from time, however, Messi made it all worthwhile. Again he found space in the Arsenal half and although Almunia stopped his first shot, Messi slotted the rebound through the keeper’s legs.
Barcelona won 4-1 on the night, 6-3 on aggregate and Messi now has 25 goals in 41 Champions League appearances, making him the club’s record scorer in the competition along with Rivaldo.

7.2 Mexico Earthquake Felt All The Way In Las Vegas – Disaster struck on Easter Sunday. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the Baja California, Mexico area damaging many structures and killing 2 people. The rumbling occurred at 3:41 PM on Sunday April 04 lasting about 40 seconds. The quake happened 16 miles south-west of Guadalupe Victoria at a depth of 20 miles.
Wide spread damage was reported ranging from shattered store windows to large cracks in buildings and even roads. Many people lost power in their area. The quake was felt all throughout Southern California and even Nevada. It was described as a slow rocking motion by many California residents. Some aftershocks were felt as well.
Later reports revealed that this earthquake released twice the energy of the Haiti quake but did far less damage. The reasons being are that the suspected fault line of the Mexicali Earthquake is far away from the nearest towns. Also because of the higher building codes required by California and Mexico. In Haiti however the fault that produced the quake was right in the middle of town.
Many more extensive reports are slowly coming in. Many small videos have popped up on video sites such as You Tube showing real life glimpses of how people react during these disasters.
A tsunami alert has been lifted after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The quake’s epicentre was 204km (127 miles) northwest of Sibolga on Sumatra’s coast, at a depth of nearly 48km, the US Geological Survey said.
Aftershocks were reported in the northern province of Aceh, but there were no reports of casualties.

A deadly magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck northwestern Mexico, rocking buildings as far away as Arizona and southern California, as a string of aftershocks rattled the US and Mexican Pacific Coast.
Emergency workers struggled to respond to damage and injuries after the tremor knocked out power, damaged water lines and snarled traffic.
In the border city of Mexicali, located 60 kilometers (38 miles) from the tremor’s epicenter, a man was killed when his home collapsed on top of him, Mexican rescue workers told AFP.
Another person was killed after running out from a home and being hit by a car in Mexicali, where 100 people were injured during the quake, Mexico’s director of civil protection Alfredo Escobedo told CNN.
Roads cracked, telephone poles were toppled and sides were ripped off buildings in Mexicali, a city of 900,000 inhabitants that serves as the capital of Baja California state.
“This is a large quake with the potential of causing damage because it is not far from a population center,” said Carlos Valdez, director of the National Seismological Service.
A firefighter at a station just outside Mexicali told the Los Angeles Times that fires caused by the quake destroyed at least six homes after damaging propane tanks and severing electricity lines.
Several homes near the Cerro Prieto volcano some 31 kilometers (19 miles) from the quake’s epicenter sank into the group as water rose up around them, according to the firefighter, Oscar Silas.
US and Mexican seismological services said the quake, which struck at 3:40 pm (2240 GMT), was shallow with a depth of just 10 kilometers (six miles). They revised upward an initial report of a 6.9-magnitude tremor.
Residents of California, Arizona and Nevada were breathing a collective sigh of relief that this was not “the big one,” with no immediate reports of injuries and only limited damage.
Seismologists have warned a massive earthquake is inevitable in California and could kill thousands of people.
Among the dozens of reported aftershocks, at least three were strong ones, including a magnitude 5.4 tremor that struck near Guadalupe Victoria, southeast of Mexicali, the US Geological Survey said.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said its initial assessment found “no significant damage or injuries” but had responded to an increase in automatic alarms and stuck elevators.
The fire department was checking transportation infrastructure, large public venues, apartment buildings and power lines from the ground and the air to ensure safety.
Rides were temporarily closed at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California, according to the Los Angeles Times.
KABC Television in Los Angeles said high-rise buildings in that city and in San Diego rocked back and forth when the quake hit and that some residents saw electric power poles moving.
The Yuma, Arizona sheriff’s department was responding to numerous building alarms but had no immediate reports of injuries.
“A little bit of everything” fell down every aisle of Fry’s grocery store, front-end manager Karla Favela told The Yuma Sun.
“The first thing I thought of — have you seen the movie ‘2012?’ The part when the grocery store splits in half?”
The USSG said the quake was felt as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada, some 460 kilometers (290 miles) from the epicenter as well as in Los Angeles, 360 kilometers (224 miles) away, and in Phoenix, Arizona, 300 kilometers (186 miles) away.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Damage reports from the U.S.-Mexico border region are growing after a magnitude-7.2 earthquake in Baja California that was felt from Tijuana and Los Angeles to Las Vegas and Phoenix.
The quake struck south of Mexicali, Mexico, at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, but damage also was being reported north of the border.
Calexico Fire Chief Peter Mercado tells KABC-TV in Los Angeles that there is substantial damage in the older section of the southeastern California city. Mercado says there is structural damage and broken windows, leaking gas lines and damage to the water system. But he says no injuries have been reported.
Across the border, a parking structure at the Mexicali city hall has collapsed. Mexicali is a bustling commerce center where trucks carrying goods cross into California.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A powerful earthquake in Baja California rocked the U.S.-Mexico border region Sunday, collapsing a parking structure south of the border and causing power outages in both countries as it sent out seismic waves felt from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and Arizona.
The 7.2-magnitude quake struck at 3:40 p.m. about 19 miles southeast of Mexicali, a bustling commerce center on the Mexican side of the border where trucks carrying goods cross into California. More than 900,000 people live in the greater Mexicali area.
It was the largest earthquake in the region in nearly 18 years and was followed by aftershocks or distant “triggered” earthquakes on both sides of the border, said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones.
A multistory parking structure collapsed at the Mexicali city hall but no one was injured, said Baja California state Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo.
Other early reports indicated only minor damage, but communication in the region more than 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles is often slow.
“I grabbed my children and said, ‘Let’s go outside, hurry, hurry!’” said Elizabeth Alvarez, 54, who said the quake hit as she was getting ready to leave her house with her children in an eastern Tijuana neighborhood, across the border from San Diego.
Hundreds of people fled Tijuana’s beach fearing a tsunami, said Capt. Juan Manuel Hernandez, chief of aquatic rescue at the Tijuana fire department. Tsunami experts quickly reported that no tsunami was expected along the West Coast, and Hernandez said the beach filled back up with people within an hour.
Tijuana Fire Chief Rafael Carillo said firefighters were rescuing people trapped in an elevator at the Ticuan Hotel in downtown Tijuana, but mostly were responding to reports of fallen cables and minor damage to buildings.
The Crowne Plaza hotel in Mexicali had minor damage — burst pipes and broken windows — but no on was hurt, said receptionist Juan Carlos Fernandez.
“There was a little bit of panic,” Fernandez said. “Wait, it’s trembling again.”
Guests fled their rooms at the Hotel Playa Club in San Felipe, on the Gulf of California, but there was no damage, said receptionist Araceli Marquez.
Seismologists said there have been many earthquakes in the region including many in the magnitude-3.0 range before Sunday’s big shock.
“The last time we had an earthquake this large in either Baja or California was in 1992 with the Landers Earthquake, which was 7.3,” Jones said.
The USGS reported three strong aftershocks within the hour, including a magnitude-5.1 jolt in the Imperial County desert east of San Diego. Magnitude-4.5 and magnitude-4.3 aftershocks were also reported. Another occurred off Malibu.
The 7.2-magnitude quake was felt as far north as Santa Barbara, USGS seismologist Susan Potter said. It was one of the strongest to hit California in recent history. Only one has been stronger — a 7.3 quake that hit Landers, Calif., and left three dead in 1992 — and there were at least two other 7.2-magnitude quakes in the last 20 years.
Seismologists also said a number of small quakes were triggered in a geothermal area in Northern California.
More than 5,000 Southern California Edison customers were affected, mostly with about 30 seconds of flickering lights. Several hundred had longer outages.
In Arizona, 3,369 customers in the Yuma area had a “relatively momentary outage” from the quake, Arizona Public Service Company spokesman Don Wool said.
Only about 70 people were still without service in the rural Gadsden and Summerton areas. But Wool said he expected electricity to be restored there in about two hours.
Clint Norred, a spokesman for the Yuma, Ariz., Police Department, said the quake was very strong there but he’d heard no reports of injuries or major damage.
In the Phoenix area, Jacqueline Land said her king-sized bed in her second-floor apartment felt like a boat gently swaying on the ocean.
“I thought to myself, ‘That can’t be an earthquake. I’m in Arizona,’” the Northern California native said.
