WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on Friday declared that authorities had uncovered a “credible terrorist threat” against the United States after the overseas discovery of US-bound packages containing explosives aboard cargo jets.
Obama said both had been addressed to Jewish organisations in the Chicago area, but did not identify any institution that had been targeted.
He was speaking to journalists at a White House news conference but did not take questions afterwards.
A few minutes later John Brennan, the Deputy National Security Adviser for Homeland Security, followed the president to the microphone.
The disclosures triggered a worldwide alert amid fears that a militant group was attempting to carry out fresh attacks.
The packages both originated in Yemen, said Obama but he did not explicitly assign blame to al-Qaida, which is active

PML-Q MNA declares suicides as God’s will
ISLAMABAD: Some of the treasury and opposition members have demanded abolishment of Islamic Ideology Council and Islamic court whereas Riaz Pirzada of Pakistan Muslim League (Q) has declared suicide incidents as will of God.
Earlier, only 30 members were present in the House when the National Assembly session begun on Friday.
During debate on budget, Fouzia Wahab of PPP tried to speak without permission on which her microphone has been closed on the orders of deputy speaker, however she has managed to continue and urged US and Paris club to write-off Pakistan’s loans as an acknowledgement of role of Pakistan in war against terror.
Riaz Pirzada of PML-Q said Islamic Ideology Council and Federal Islamic courts should be abolished and further added that it is not the duty of court to paralyze government. He also dubbed suicides incidents as will of God.
Bushra Gohar of ANP supported Pirzada’s stance on Islamic Ideology Council and said Maulana Sherani is a political person and he should not be the chairman of the council.
Michelle Obama Shorts
Michelle Obama Shorts, Michelle wearing “short” shorts while on holiday with her family during yesterday’s trip to the Grand Canyon are sparking a similar debate. While most women would agree that shorts (at any length) are often tough to pull off, I think we should line up with hands raised to offer her a high five. And since she is gifted with those long legs, I beg the question — wouldn’t all shorts be “short” on her?
Michelle Obama Shorts are out there front and center today as she was reported wearing some very casual fashion while vacationing on at the Grand Canyon. The big question was, “Should the first lady allow herself to be seen in public in such a casual look?” I say “Why not?” you see some women wearing their pajamas to go to the grocery store every day! She looks good and in nice shape so you go First Lady! The voters who saw the picture below agreed with me at 88% she should wear this if she wants.

Milwaukee Mayor Attacked
Milwaukee Mayor Attacked, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Wednesday he was doing what any good citizen should have done when he tried to help a woman screaming for help — even if it led him being beaten by a man.
Wearing a large cast on his right hand and arm, the 55-year-old mayor spoke for the first time about the attack as the mayor attempted to help the woman and her 1-year-old granddaughter near the Wisconsin State Fair on Saturday. The mayor suffered a shattered hand, missing teeth and gashes on his face and the back of his head.
Speaking from his home where he has been recuperating since he left the hospital on Monday, Barrett said he initially thought something was wrong with the baby before quickly realizing the 20-year-old man was agitated.
Barrett, who had a bloodied gash on his face, said the situation got “very, very ugly, very, very quickly.”
A 20-year-old man has been arrested, and Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern said he expects his office to get the case Wednesday to file charges. The grandmother has said the little girl’s birth father was arrested for allegedly beating Barrett.
“The response (from the man) was so bizarre that things took off in the wrong direction,” Barrett said.
About 100 neighbors and friends gathered and applauded the mayor Wednesday as he approached the microphone with his wife and his niece who made the 911 call.
As he’s been recovering, he’s gotten calls from lots of well-wishers, including President Barack Obama. He said he was happy to get the call — but told the president he’d prefer “to be called for pitching a perfect game” instead.

Mehbooba Mufti Throws Microphone at Held Kashmir Assembly Speaker
SRINAGAR: There was ruckus in the Assembly of Indian occupied Kashmir on Monday with legislators of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stalling the proceedings by shouting slogans against the Indian government over the Shopian murders.
The PDP legislators gathered near the speaker’s podium and Mehbooba Mufti even tried to fling a microphone at the speaker.
The incident occurred after PDP leaders started raising slogans over the Shopian incident in which two women were raped and murdered in May.
Led by party president Mehbooba Mufti, PDP legislators started shouting slogans like “Produce the killers of Shopian” as the assembly session began.
After repeated requests by the speaker failed to restore order, he ordered the dismissal of the PDP MLAs from the floor of the House. The MLAs, however, refused to leave and police officials had to forcibly escort them out of the assembly.
Pandemonium continued in the assembly till the PDP legislators were taken out of the House.
Mehbooba Mufti later accused the Speaker of using “unparliamentarily” language and acting more like a “ruling NC worker” in the House.
Mehbooba Mufti said, “I took on the Speaker as he was ordering PDP MLAs out.”
“We did nothing wrong. Speaker was at fault, she added.
PDP MLAs led by Mehbooba Mufti are now staging a sit-in dharna outside the assembly.
Meanwhile, the bail applications of IoK police officers Javed Iqbal Mattoo and Rohit Baskotra, arrested in connection with the sensational Shopian murder case, will come up for hearing on Monday at a court in Shopian.
The pleas of the two officers were moved on Sunday before the sessions court by senior Supreme Court lawyer Asim Mehrotra who flew into Srinagar to argue the case on behalf of Mattoo and Baskotra.
