01dfb0f1f1today Emergency Inter Provincial Meeting Convenesed By PM TodayISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has summoned an emergency inter-provincial meeting here on Thursday on the insistence of Sindh and Balochistan governments after Punjab refused to lift ban on inter-provincial movement of sugar, well-informed sources told Business Recorder.

The sources said this serious situation has emerged after the Chief Secretaries of both the provinces talked to their counterpart in Punjab for lifting of the ban on sugar movement, but the latter did not agree to relax ban despite Prime Minister’s instructions.

Sugar price in Punjab is below Rs 50 per kg whereas in Balochistan and Sindh prices are Rs 60 per kg and Rs 55 per kg, respectively. The sources said Prime Minister Gilani has also directed the Chief Ministers of four provinces to ensure their presence in the meeting for a consensus decision.

On August 22, 2009, Prime Minister chaired a meeting on sugar crisis, which was attended by the concerned federal ministers, federal secretaries and high officials of the provincial governments. Prime Minister was briefed on the overall situation of sugar price and its availability in the country.

AFTER DETAILED DISCUSSION, THE FOLLOWING DECISIONS WERE TAKEN:

(i) ex-mill price of sugar will be Rs 45/- per kg inclusive of all taxes;

(ii) ex-mill price of Rs 45/- per kg will be applicable through out Pakistan;

(iii) price will be for three months starting from 1st of Ramadan;

(iv) for the next three months government will reduce its taxes including GST by 50 percent ;

(v) Minister for Industries and Production will ensure that the 100,000 tons of sugar will be supplied by TCP during the month of Ramazan and be available to the consumers at Rs 38 per kg;

(vi) TCP and USC will seek assistance from the Provinces for effective monitoring and checking of the sale of sugar through USC outlets; (vi) there will be no restriction on inter-provincial movement of sugar and wheat; (vii) since Balochistan does not have any sugar mills, its needs will be met through the mills located in other provinces without any restriction; and (viii) Prime Minister will invite all the Chief Ministers and other stake-holders within a fortnight to formulate a long term strategy for sugar.

While winding up the discussion Prime Minister had emphasised that the consumers should not face any difficulty in availability of essential commodities particularly sugar during the holy month of Ramazan. He also observed that the above decisions have been arrived at with the consensus of all the provinces and will be implemented.
