KABUL: NATO said Monday that at least 15 Taliban militants were killed in southern Afghanistan in clashes and an air strike.
Troops raided a compound in Baghran district of Helmand province looking for a senior Taliban commander allegedly overseeing and guiding all Taliban military actions in the province.
In clashes at the property, Afghan and NATO troops killed four insurgents, said the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), although there was no immediate confirmation that the commander was among the dead.
The military said soldiers destroyed the compound after discovering a bomb-making factory and that the property had been booby-trapped with bombs.
ISAF said an air strike then killed 11 militants who attacked ground troops as they were preparing the leave the area.

GAZA: Palestinian officials said an Israeli strike killed one and wounded two in northern Gaza.
Two large explosions were heard early Sunday on morning.
Hamas officials claimed an Israeli navy boat fired at a militant training ground north of Gaza City.
A hospital official confirmed that one person died and two were wounded, one critically.
The Israeli military said it was looking into the report.
Israel often targets Gaza militants in the early hours either preparing or training for attacks. The last such strike took place more than a month ago.
The incident comes as Israeli-Palestinian peace talks are at a standstill, with the two still seeking a compromise on Israeli settlement building that will allow the month-old talks to continue. AGENCIES

ISLAMABAD: Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani ordered on Friday an investigation into a video posted on the Internet showing men in Pakistani military fatigues shooting at a group of what the military said were civilians.
The video raised fresh questions about alleged extra-judicial killings by the army, while Pakistan faces mounting U.S. pressure to crack down harder on militants launching attacks on Western forces in Afghanistan from Pakistani sanctuaries.
The U.S. officials said last week they had asked Pakistan for information about the Internet video purporting to show Pakistani troops lined up in a firing squad shooting bound and blindfolded men in traditional Pakistani clothing.
Human Rights Watch this year briefed the U.S. State Department and congressional officials about evidence of more than 200 summary executions of suspected Taliban sympathizers by

KABUL: NATO said Thursday that another Taliban leader had been killed in an air strike and ground operation in northern Afghanistan, along with seven of his associates.
The US-led force in Afghanistan named Maulawi Jawadullah as the Taliban leader of Yangi Qala district in Takhar province.
He was allegedly wanted in connection with the deaths of at least 10 Afghan police in an attack in the neighbouring province of Kunduz.
NATO said Jawadullah was “directly responsible” for kidnapping and holding hostage Afghan security personnel, and carried out bombings and ambushes.
NATO said an air strike targeted Jawadullah and a group of insurgents, killing five militants.
The military said that an Afghan and coalition ground force then killed three insurgents in hiding “after they threatened the security force”.

GAZA CITY: Five Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire in Gaza on Tuesday as rockets were launched and a rare cross-border raid after a deadly Israeli assault on an aid convoy.
Three of the five were killed by an Israeli strike in the north of the Hamas-run territory, according to Muawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza emergency services.
The Israeli military said it had carried out an air strike in the area about an hour after two rockets were fired from Gaza. There were no reports of any casualties or damage from the makeshift projectiles.
Israeli troops had earlier shot dead two Palestinians who had snuck across the border in the southern part of the territory, according to a military spokeswoman.
“There was an exchange of fire in which they were killed,” she said, adding that no Israelis were wounded.
Witnesses on the Gaza side of the border said the exchange of fire was followed by Israeli shelling, and a photographer saw an Israeli helicopter firing missiles.
There was no immediate report of casualties from the Palestinian side as ambulances were not able to enter the area.

Samsung Monte Review, Latest Update:Sometimes when a new handset is released, it is instantly clear where it fits into that particular
manufacturer’s line-up of existing handsets, but every once in a while a new product is announced that, whilst being a fine device in its own right, seems to be nothing more than a filler handset, just another variation on an existing phone. The Samsung S5620 Monte is a device that fits into this category. I mean, it is indeed a fine handset, with an impressive array of features, but I do wonder just who it will appeal to, what is the market segment it is aimed at? Perhaps, though, the S5620 isn’t designed to attract a specific type of user, and will instead offer a broad appeal across the market. It will be interesting to see just where this phone sits when it is released.
As I said, the feature setup on the handset is very good, with a solid if not spectacular line-up. Very lightweight, at just 92g, the Samsung Monte measures in at a comfortable 109 x 54 x 12.5mm, very much among the norm for a mid range device. With a full touch enabled display, using capacitive technology, the Monte delivers a TFT screen measuring in at a good 3.0 inches, supporting up to 256,000 colours and with a pixel resolution of 240 x 400. The handset runs on the proprietary Samsung TouchWiz user interface, which is a simple, icon driven menu system that makes navigation simple for even the newest of mobile phone users. The device has a built in accelerometer for auto display rotation, and there is a turn to mute option included too, which handily allows you to mute incoming calls by simply flipping the phone over. Another nice inclusion is the Smart Unlock option, which allows you to unlock the phone and instantly launch a chosen application by simply ‘drawing’ a pre selected shape on your phone’s display. So for example, drawing an ‘M’ could launch the music player, or an ‘S’ could launch the SMS feature, and so on.
