NFL draft: Lions select Middletown’s Amari Spievey in third round NEW YORK — Middletown native and former Xavier High School football star, Amari Spievey has found an NFL home.
The Detroit Lions came calling on day two of the NFL draft, selecting Spievey with the No. 2 pick in the third round (66th overall).
According to NFL.com, Spievey was a two year starter for the Iowa Hawkeyes after transferring from Iowa Central Community college. Spievey’s player profile on NFL.com says “he has a good combination of size and athleticism for the position, which is listed as cornerback.
“Spievey doesn’t have great power and pop as a run support defender but gives consistent effort and is solid in the open field. Spievey is just average as a reactor to route progressions and has some work to do in this phase of his game.
“He does have a good feel for leverage in the running game and is quick to squeeze running lanes from the perimeter. Spievey shows good hands with the ball in the air and is aggressive to make a play in traffic. Spievey is a good football player that has a higher ceiling than many prospects but may take some time to work into a starting role,” NFL.com said.
The Lions had a strong first day of the NFL draft, selecting Nebraska defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh with the second overall pick in the first round and trading for the Vikings first round pick (30th overall) to select California running back Jahvid Best. Spievey was Detroit’s first pick on day two of the draft.

Politico reports that leadership has twisted arms in the vast majority of the caucus which is pro-choice, and Stupak won’t be the poison pill.Asked whether her allies in the pro-choice movement would support the bill with the language offered yesterday by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), Speaker Nancy Pelosi offered a one-word answer: “Yes.”
“I don’t believe any of us believe we can hold up what we’ve been fighting for … and that’s health care,” said Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.).
But the lawmakers said they would work hard to whip the Stupak amendment in hopes of keeping it out of the final bill, and several said they weren’t ready to declare how they would vote if Stupak’s language made it in.
“We’re nor conceding that,” Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Uss New York Commissioning:Unless you are a VIPÂ with a ticket, you won’t be able to attend in person Saturday’s commissioning of the USS New York into active Navy service, but it will be streamed live on navy.mil.
The 11 a.m. ceremony will be at Piers 86 and 88 in Manhattan, where the new amphibious assault ship is docked, along with the retired aircraft carrier Intrepid.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will be the event’s keynote speaker.
The ship was built with 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center in its bow.
The ship, which arrived in its namesake state on Monday after a two-week trip from a Louisiana shipyard, leaves for its home port of Norfolk, Va., on Thursday.
The public can tour the ship at Pier 88 at 12th Avenue and West 48th Street on Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon; Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Latin Grammys held in Las Vegas this week may have hardly turned up on the media radar (except a brief mention on LALATE).
