Mobile Service Of Google Partially Blocked In China

SAN FRANCISCO: Google on Monday reported that its mobile Internet service in China was partially blocked but it was unknown whether the trouble was related to a stand-off over censorship there.
A website Google set up for people to track the status of its services in China showed that the US Internet giant’s Mobile offering on Sunday joined Groups, Picasa and Docs as listed as “partially blocked.”
“We can confirm that our status page indicates that Mobile services are partially blocked from within mainland China,” a Google spokesman said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.
Mobile service availability fluctuates and it was too soon to be certain when the partial blockage was a retaliatory move by Chinese officials.
Google mobile includes search, blog, map, news and other services for smartphones and other Internet-enabled handsets.
Google-owned video-sharing website YouTube and a Blogger service for people to voice ideas, musings or observations online were completely blocked, according to the online “Mainland China service availability” list.
A face-off with China over online censorship culminated on March 22 with Google stopping its voluntary filtering of online search results in China.
Days later, China’s second largest mobile phone operator said it will remove Google’s search function from new handsets in response to the US Internet giant’s tussle with Beijing.
China Unicom said the search function would be dropped from new phones using Google’s Android mobile operating system.
China currently has at least 384 million Internet users, but it has more than 750 million mobile subscribers, many of whom access web content via their handsets.
In January, shortly after saying it could leave China altogether over web censorship and cyberattacks, Google postponed the launch of Android-based mobile handsets developed with Motorola and Samsung for China Unicom.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) CEO Steve Jobs on Thursday revealed stronger-than-expected sales of 450,000 for the iPad since its much-hyped debut, and touted a phone operating system with a new advertising platform to compete with rival Google Inc’s. (GOOG.O)
Analysts expect sales of 1 million units or more for the iPad — touted as a new class of gadget that will bridge laptops and smartphones — in the current quarter ending June, and roughly 5 million in 2010, though estimates vary widely.
“We’re making them as fast as we can, our ramp is going well, but evidently we can’t quite make enough of them yet so we’re going to have to try harder,” Jobs said, noting iPad sell-outs at Best Buy (BBY.N) stores.
The electronics giant has staked its reputation on the 9.7-inch touchscreen tablet. It is helping foster a market for tablet computers that is expected to grow to as many as 50 million units by 2014, according to analysts.
“I think it’s pretty impressive, five days almost half a million units, and it shows there’s still pretty good momentum behind the first day,” said Gartner analyst Van Baker.
Despite some critics who question whether a true need exists for such a gadget, analysts expect Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N), Dell (DELL.O) and others to trot out competing devices of their own this year.
Since going on sale on April 3, users have downloaded 600,000 digital books and 3.5 million applications for the iPad, Jobs said. There are already 3,500 apps available for the iPad.
“It was above my expectations, frankly,” said Joe Clark, managing partner of Financial Enhancement Group, referring to iPad sales.
“The day the original Apps Store launched it was a game change for the iPhone and it will do the same eventually for the iPad.”
At a media event at the company’s Cupertino, California, headquarters, Jobs said Apple had so far sold more than 50 million iPhones, the smartphone that competes with Research in Motion’s (RIM.TO) Blackberry and Motorola’s (MOT.N) Droid.
Apple is expected to launch the fourth-generation model of its iPhone, which was introduced in January 2007, later this year.
Jobs, looking thin but energetic, said the forthcoming iPhone 4.0 operating system — also available on iPads this fall — will carry its new “iAd” mobile advertising platform, marking the company’s foray into a small but burgeoning market.
IAds will allow applications developers to use advertisements in their apps, pocketing 60 percent of the revenue. Apple will sell and host the ads.
Jobs harshly criticized the current manner and look of mobile advertising, particularly search ads. He promised that iAds will foster more engaging advertising that will not pull users away from the content within apps.
Tim Bajarin, president of consulting company Creative Strategies, said it was a dramatic shift in thinking about the delivery of mobile advertising, and an obvious move by Apple to set itself apart from Google, which has made its name on search ads.
“It’s very clear that Jobs believes that ads in the context of apps makes more sense than generic mobile search,” he said.
Apple’s entry into the mobile ad arena had been widely expected. This year, it paid $270 million for Quattro Wireless, an advertising network that spans both mobile websites and smartphone applications.
Google, which already sells advertising on smartphones, agreed to buy mobile ad firm AdMob late in 2009. U.S. regulators are examining the deal’s antitrust implications.
Research group Gartner expects the mobile advertising market to expand by 78 percent to $1.6 billion in 2010.
Jobs also said the new operating system will include support for multitasking — addressing a perennial consumer complaint — allowing users to switch between several programs running simultaneously.
Shares of Apple turned positive briefly after Jobs’ announcement before quickly dipping back into negative territory. They closed 0.3 percent lower at $239.94 on the Nasdaq.

Dell Accuse Sharp, Hitachi, Toshiba Over LCD Price Fixing
March 17, 2010 by Trend PK

Dell has accused five Asian firms that make liquid crystal display panels of illegally colluding on prices.
The world’s third largest PC maker filed a complaint against Hitachi, Sharp, Toshiba, HannStar, and Seiko in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on Friday, according to a Reuters report. Damages sought by Dell have not yet been determined.
Dell is only the latest major buyer of LCD panels to allege price-fixing by several of the industry’s largest suppliers. In October, AT&T, which purchases LCD panels for its cell phones, accused LG, Samsung, and AU Optronics of price fixing, and in December Nokia filed suit claiming the same thing.
For Sharp and Hitachi, this is also familiar territory. Early last year, Hitachi Displays, LG, Sharp, and Chunghwa Picture Tubes plead guilty and paid $585 million for their roles in an LCD price-fixing scheme related to displays sold to Dell, Apple, Motorola, and others. Executives from Chunghwa, Hitachi, and LG executives were sentenced to jail and fined.

China Mobile Phones posing an Alarming Threat to Pakistani Economy
According to a report issued by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the teledensity in Pakistan till November 2009 was observed 62.9%. The statistics show that the growth in the telecommunication sector is making a notable contribution in the country’s economy. The current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Pakistan is worth US$168 billion and 0.27 % of the world’s economy1. The telecom sector’s share in the GDP growth on an average is about 2 % 2 that means the growth of telecommunication industry promises of the constant economic development.
There are many mobile phone manufacturing companies and telecommunication service providers operating nationwide. Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola are amongst some of the multinational cellular phone manufacturing companies that are leading in the local market as well. They have made numerous investments in multiple aspects in Pakistan’s telecommunication sector.
The Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Pakistan was declined by 31.2 % in the year 2008-2009. The Foreign Direct Investment in the telecommunication sector in this year is declined by 43.3% and reached to US$ 815 million. If we examine the track record of the foreign investments in the sector, we would come to know that there was a continuous decline in numbers as the overall FDI fell from US$ 5,410 million in the year 2007-2008 to US$ 3,720 million in 2008-20093. This unremitting decline in the foreign investment particularly in the telecom sector has given rise to some serious concerns for the economists of the country.
Amongst various factors responsible for the constant decline in the foreign investments of the country, a mounting trend of Chinese knockoffs of the branded phones could be a cause of deteriorated situation. As these Chinese knockoffs offer somewhat similar appearances as that of original branded phones in cheapest price, people are more fascinated in keeping a Chinese copy of high-end phone with them. The availability of China mobile phones in cheap prices is a consequence of an organized smuggling which is supported by the various local bodies.
If we look at the bigger picture of ‘Smuggling Mafia’ of mobile phones that is involved in the whole activity, we would come across with some more interesting faces of crime. The old smuggled mobile phones are being sold at the prices equal to that of new ones in the market. According to the sources the old mobile phones are being sold to the innocent customers openly in various electronics market in the city. The casing and keypad of such phones are changed and the phone battery is replaced by a china battery after proper servicing in such a way that a common person can not be able to distinguish the old phone among different mobile phones. There is software available to change the talk timer of the phone to ‘zero’ in order to remove every possible clue of the crime.
The illegal smuggling of mobile phones is not only threatening for the law enforcement bodies but also imposing a great challenge for the country’s economy as this attempt is discouraging the legal import of the original mobile phones.
Furthermore cheap Chinese cell phones may be a great hurdle for the law enforcement agencies as these phones facilitate the criminals and terrorists because they lack an identification number to trace calls. International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique code that is allotted to every mobile device which is used to trace or block the device as and when required. On the other hand, more than 100 Chinese mobile phones possess a same IMEI number and blocking of one such device may result in the blockage of several mobile phones at the same time. That means it is impossible to trace or block the mobile phone.
As Pakistan is one of the most targeted and vulnerable regions for the terrorist and criminal activities it is extremely important to ensure all the measures to minimize the security risks and threats. Chinese counterfeit phones could be a safe haven for criminals as the calls made by these phones can not be traced.
According to the statistics, approximately 50-80 cell phones on an average are snatched or stolen every day in Karachi. Due to the same IMEI number of several China mobile phones, the theft or snatched mobile phones can not be blocked by CPLC and PTA. Thus, China mobile phones pose a great threat to the security and law enforcement system.
The Chinese knockoffs may offer the similar appearance that of the branded phones but several questions are being raised on the quality and reliability of the cell phones. People may find these cell phones affordable for their pockets but they start complaining about the phone’s performance just after a few months of their purchase. The few repeatedly complaints regarding the Chinese phones are about the weak battery, low standard camera, poor sound quality and internet connectivity. As no legal industry standards are followed while manufacturing fake Chinese mobile phones, these mobile phones pose a serious health threat. They give off excessive radiation and their low-grade batteries can explode anytime.
People face extreme inconvenience at the time of warranty claim of the China phones. Fake mobile phones do not carry authentic warranty. If the fake phone’s hardware malfunctions, there’s no other choice but to dispose off the phone because the parts are not available in the market.
In one aspect when the business of Chinese mobile phones does not make any healthy contribution to the country’s economy, on the other hand their business in disturbing foreign investments. According to a report issued by PTA, the share of telecom sector in total tax revenue is 6-7% per annum. During the year 2008-2009, the sector continued to contribute handsome amount in national kitty through various taxes and regulatory charges. Telecom sector’s contribution to national exchequer rose to Rs. 112 billion in 2008-2009 compared to Rs. 111 billion in the year 2007-2008.
If we analyze the tax contribution made by the China mobile business, it is surprising to know that there is no proper procedure being followed to ensure the payment of sales tax on single Chinese mobile phone’s sale. The facts point out that the Chinese mobile phone business is not making any significant contribution to the economy. On contrary the legal import of the branded mobile phones facilitates the economy and their expanding business in making a distinctive contribution in increasing the country’s GDP.
Due to their adverse affects on the economic development, our neighboring country India has already banned the sale of Chinese phones. The government of Pakistan particularly the concerned authorities like PTA and CPLC should take a serious notice to ban the sale of Chinese mobile phones in the country. The unremitting decline in the foreign investments in telecom sector is an alarming economic indicator for the country’s economy. This is a high time when the government and non government bodies should endeavor to eliminate the factors being responsible for the demise of economy.

Nexus One Google Phone

Nexus One Google Phone, MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif: Google Inc took the wraps off a new smartphone that it will sell directly to consumers, aiming to boost its position in the emerging mobile Internet market by exerting greater control over the new generation of Web-surfing devices.
The sleek touchscreen phone, dubbed the Nexus One, is Google’s boldest foray outside its traditional Internet home turf and represents the first time the 11-year-old company will sell a consumer electronics device bearing its well-known brand.
But analysts say the phone is not as revolutionary in design as Apple Inc’s iPhone was. Tech websites and forums gave Google favorable reviews but also noted the new phone was not that different from others in the market that run Google’s Android software, such as Motorola’s Droid.
The Nexus One ships immediately and exclusively from Google’s online store for $179 with a two-year contract from Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA, or $529 without a service plan.
The more expensive unlocked phone, analysts say, is priced too high to dramatically alter the relationship between carriers and hardware vendors in which wireless service providers have traditionally controlled handset distribution in the U.S.
