By Roger Friedman

TrendPK.com: EXCLUSIVE Ricky Minor, Whitney Houston’s longtime musical director, tells me that he met with her on Thursday morning here at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. “She’d just been swimming. It was before 9am. She loves to swim. She had wet hair and she was getting it all over me.”

Minor was getting ready to rehearse Brandy and Monica for a medley of Supremes songs for Clive Davis’s dinner–being held now, only three hours after Whitney’s tragic death. “She stayed, gave the girls advice. She was singing along from the theater. She said, Can I have a mike? And I said No, this is their show,” Minor said, remembering that he was joking. He is in shock he says.

While we spoke, another member of the Davis team came along and said “I spoke to her yesterday. She was fine.” Minor tells me Whitney showed him her athletic arms from swimming, and was “very proud” of her athletic condition. “She said she was very excited about producing Sparkle and wanted to produce more films. It’s unbelievable.”

TrendPK.com: It seems that Reese Witherspoon might have something in common with ‘Bachelor’ contestant Courtney Robertson who is currently going after Ben Flajnik.

It is being rumored that Witherspoon’s new husband, Jim Toth, once dated Robertson although it was reportedly nothing serious at the time, states UsMagazine.com. Witherspoon allegedly didn’t find out until recently, but really didn’t care about it.

Toth and Robertson may have dated briefly, but they apparently didn’t go very far with the romance.

Iconic artist and philanthropist Paul McCartney was honored as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year at this special event celebrating his exceptional artistic achievements as well as his philanthropic work. The sold-out tribute to McCartney benefits MusiCares’ emergency financial assistance and addiction recovery programs. Proceeds from the annual Person of the Year tribute — now in its 22nd year — provide essential support for MusiCares, which ensures that members of the music community have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need.

Additional performances included multi-GRAMMYÂź winning artists and current GRAMMY nominees Tony Bennett, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, and Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas; GRAMMY winning artist Duane Eddy; multi-GRAMMY winning artists Norah Jones, Alicia Keys and James Taylor; two-time GRAMMY winning artists Diana Krall and Neil Young with Crazy Horse; two-time Latin GRAMMY winning artist Sergio Mendes; and current GRAMMY nominee Katy Perry. The evening also featured a special performance by 14-time GRAMMY winning artist and 2012 MusiCaresÂź Person of the Year Paul McCartney.

LOVE, a Cirque du Soleil creation and co-production with Apple Corps Ltd., celebrates the musical legacy of The Beatles and is presented exclusively at The Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. This joint artistic venture marks the first time that The Beatles company, Apple Corps Ltd., has agreed to a major theatrical partnership. The project was born out of a personal friendship and mutual admiration between the late George Harrison and Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte.

Since its June 2006 premiere, LOVE has performed over 2,000 shows for more than 4.3 million people. Recently named “Best Show in Las Vegas” by USA Today, LOVE has been voted “Best Show in Las Vegas” by the Las Vegas Review-Journal for four consecutive years and continues to be a celebrity favorite. In February 2011, The Beatles’ GRAMMY Award-winning LOVE album and ‘All Together Now’ documentary made their digital debuts, exclusively on iTunes.

Who Invented the Oscars?

February 11, 2012 by

f971oscars multiple rows statues 600x248 Who Invented the Oscars?

TrendPK.com: The founders of the now infamous Academy were a motley crew as individuals, but when they first converged in Hollywood, then just a small town with dirt roads, sparks flew and fueled a common dream: to bring artistic validity to their beloved new medium.

Today, movies are so ingrained in our culture it is hard to imagine a time when former cowpunchers, prospectors, vaudevillians, even junk dealers made up the rules as they went along. Prohibition and the Great Depression were keeping everyone on edge, and the business was rife with murders and drug scandals. Something had to happen. And so on January 11th, 1927, thirty-six members of Hollywood’s elite and not-so-elite came together at the behest of MGM chief Louis B. Mayer. From Cecil B. DeMille to Mary Pickford, Harry M. Warner, who owned a bike shop before launching the revolutionary “talkie” The Jazz Singer, even Joseph M. Schenk, freed from jail just in time to discover Marilyn Monroe – each guest was more colorful than the last. Although they didn’t know it yet, these thirty-six achievers and dreamers gave birth to a golden child.

Who were these movers and shakers who would change movies forever? And what about Oscar, their famous son? He is fast approaching his 100th birthday, and is still the undisputed king of Hollywood. Yet with such dynamic parents, what else could we expect?

In Debra Pawlak’s new book, Bringing Up Oscar, readers will learn, as Pawlak tells USA TODAY in an interview, all about these 36 founders. “They were from all walks of life, but in 1927, these were all people who were at the top of their game in Hollywood,” Pawlak says. And what was their motivation? “Movies were getting bad press. Temperance groups had succeeded in outlawing alcohol, so they turned their attention to Hollywood. There was no place in the industry where people could come with their disputes, and people in the industry needed to support one another,” Pawlak continues in the interview. The Wall Street Journal explains further that “to a great extent, the formation of the Academy was an act of aspirational pride. Within little more than 20 years, the American movie itself had morphed from a parlor amusement into an art form of subtlety, grace and astonishing commercial success. The Academy’s founders wanted recognition for their life’s work, and they knew they wouldn’t get it from New York, whose theatrical and literary hierarchies would never admit that the movies had achieved a standing equivalent to that of the older arts.”

Critics, newspapers and industry insiders have all welcomed Pawlak’s efforts and bringing the life stories of these great figures in film history to the forefront for a new generation of readers. Michael Deeley, the Academy Award-winning producer of The Deer Hunter and the author of Blade Runners, Deer Hunters, and Blowing the Bloody Doors Off says that Pawlak’s book is “a thoroughly researched and very entertaining portrait of the men and women whose energy and talent created today’s world-wide American film industry.” Booklist has called Bringing Up Oscar a “fascinating account” and Publishers Weekly raved that “by skillfully weaving these highlights of Hollywood history throughout this Tinseltown tapestry, Pawlak succeeds in recreating that colorful era when flickers turned into features and silents converted to sound.”

ABOUT DEBRA ANN PAWLAK

Debra Ann Pawlak has spent over ten years writing about Hollywood history. She is the author of Farmington and Farmington Hills, for Arcadia’s “Making of America” series, and has written a screenplay about Clara Bow. She lives in southeastern Michigan and is available for interviews at any time.

TrendPK.com: Jennifer Lopez has had a successful career in show business, but that doesn’t mean she is ready for her twins with Marc Anthony to go after the same career.

Lopez recently admitted that she would be more than supportive of her children if they chose to go into entertainment, but she won’t let them make that decision just yet, states RadarOnline.com.

“I don’t want them to be in the business at a young age. I just don’t think they need that burden, that pressure. They should have a normal life – go to school, play, grow up
If they want to go off and be artists or singers or dancers or pilots or architects or anything – then they have my full support,” Lopez commented.

However, she wouldn’t be too surprised if they do enter entertainment: “I can hear that Emme can sing. She loves to dance and will sit there for hours watching dance
She could be a choreographer. And I can see that Max is very comfortable in front of a camera.”

Do you think her children will enter show business?
