Under-fire opener Gautam Gambhir earned sound backing from skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni ahead of the second Test against New Zealand starting on Friday.

The left-handed opener has struggled with the bat of late, aggregating 86 runs from his last 10 Test innings.

Gambhir, 29, missed India’s Test against Australia in Bangalore last month with a knee injury and his replacement Murali Vijay scored a solid 139, putting pressure on his more experienced team-mate to perform.

“Players do go out of form,” Dhoni told reporters at a pre-match press conference on Thursday.

“It happens to everyone in cricket. Gambhir has set the benchmark so high that expectations of him have grown. With Gambhir, it is more about the pressure to perform than the fear of failure.

“The kind of innings he has played in the past shows how good a cricketer he is. He

SYDNEY: Australian captain Ricky Ponting has rejected the criticism of Shane Warne about Nathan Hauritz, saying all the fields set for the off spinner were of his own choosing.

Hauritz suffered heavy punishment as India chased 207 to win the second Test at Bangalore, returning figures of 1-76 from 12 overs, including 22 from his first two overs before lunch.

He was treated with disdain by the young batsmen Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara, after returning the unflattering figures of 2-153 in the first innings.

Watching the play unfold on television from Australia, Warne pointed the finger of blame at Ponting.

“How the hell can Hauritz bowl to this field??” Warne wrote on Twitter.

“Feeling for Hauritz , terrible !! What are these tactics ? Sorry Ricky but what are you doing.”

However Ponting said Warne’s comments were made without a

Tendulkar finished the day unbeaten on a monumental 191 and opener Vijay scored 139 during a record stand of 308 runs for the third wicket — a remarkable recovery from 38-2 in Sunday’s last session.

It was the highest third-wicket partnership in India-Australia Tests, surpassing the 222-run stand between Aussies Allan Border and Kim Hughes in Chennai in
