Volcano smoking bands out of Coachella
A volcano in Iceland is playing havoc with a music festival more than 4,000 miles away.
As CNN’s Denise Quan reported this morning, several UK bands are scrambling to make it to the Coachella music festival in Indio, California – but thanks to the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, air traffic has been grounded in parts of Europe. That’s meant that some bands aren’t going to make their scheduled slots.
Among those that have canceled: the Cribs (recently joined by Johnny Marr), Frightened Rabbit and now Bad Lieutenant.
“Bad Lieutenant will not be able to play Coachella tomorrow,” a spokesperson for the band told CNN. “They are stuck in the UK and unable to get a flight out. Everyone is very bummed about it.”
Among the acts who are playing the three-day festival – which begins today – are Jay-Z, Vampire Weekend, Gorillaz (a UK act already in the States), Pavement, Devo and Julian Casablancas.
Karan Johar:MNIK Rocks

MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Fox Star (India) have rewritten box office history with My Name is Khan — Karan’s Friday release that has smashed all previous international box office records.
Incredibly, the film managed the highest-ever single opening day collection for a Hindi film worldwide in many markets globally. And in the bargain, picked up a fair share of praise from the international media as well.
The Hollywood Reporter, for instance, says MNIK is “well worth the 162-minute journey.” And The Guardian thinks of it as “a likeable and slickly-constructed Bollywood tale of understanding and tolerance”. Not to be left out, the LA Times describes the SRK-Kajol flick as “a sweeping epic — potent, engaging and timely entertainment”.
In India, Bollywood trade sources say that despite having a limited release in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, due to political opposition, the film managed a huge worldwide box office collection on the opening day. The trade also feels that the film may have easily earned an additional Rs 5 crores over this figure had the release been trouble-free.
On the global front MNIK has reportedly broken almost every record there is for Bollywood. It got the biggest international opening day collection and is said to be 30 per cent higher than its closest competitor. In UK, where Shah Rukh Khan is the Bollywood King, the film that previewed on February 11, came fourth in the market place behind Hollywood offerings like Avatar, The Wolfman and Invictus. In this market, MNIK broke the single day preview figure held by another Karan Johar film, Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna (2006).
Khan continues its march in other foreign segments as well.
In Australia, the February 11 preview collections for MNIK ranks at #11 in the market. Quite like the Ozzies, their next door neighbours, the Kiwis too gave the film a thumbs up. In Germany, where it premiered (first time for a Bollywood film) at the Berlin Film Festival in Shah Rukh’s presence, the tickets were reportedly sold out in five seconds flat on ebay for 1000 Euros, something that’s also never happened before. While in the Middle East, where SRK has a legion fan following, the film has shown 50 per cent better opening collections than any other previous film in Bollywood history. The film is also to be released in Egypt, Syria, Oman and Lebanon.
“We are delighted with the performance and the audience reactions across demographics,’’ says Vijay Singh of Fox Star Studios. “More so, because this is just one phase of the release. Besides the 45 countries where MNIK is already playing, it will be rolled out in a phased manner across 25 non-traditional markets from April onwards.’’
Naturally, Karan is elated. Says Bollywood’s dynamic and celebrated filmmaker, “I am overwhelmed with all the feedback. I’ve never received so much love on any film before. It is heartening to connect with the audiences worldwide. My name is Karan and I’m truly humbled.
