Pakistan team announced for World Squash C’ship

Three players in the final squad are from KPK and one from Punjab. The championship is starting in Germany on August 21. Amir Atlas, Waqar Mehboob and Nasir Iqbal are from Peshawar while Yasir Butt from Lahore.

Amir Atlas, Pakistan’s No. 1, says he is attaching great importance to the championship. Yasir is ranked number 3, Waqar number 4 and Nasir is ranked number 7 in Pakistan. All the squad is hopeful of producing good results at the contest. Pakistan last played the championship in 1993.

Pakistani team will leave for Germany on August 18. The players say they all eye the trophy and would love to send home a good news for the nation.

Indian model vows to strip for WCup win

MOHALI: Women in India are encouraged to dress modestly at all times, but a brasher side to modern life has been exposed after a popular model vowed to strip naked if the nation wins the cricket World Cup.

Poonam Pandey, 20, who features in a best-selling Indian swimwear calendar, said she wanted to provide an incentive to players by promising them she would bare all – though whether her offer will be welcomed is not known.

“I’m a cricket fanatic and I’m a diehard supporter of my nation. India needs a lot of support and this is my way of supporting the team,” she told several newspapers on Wednesday.

Asked by reporters if she was pulling of a publicity stunt, she replied: “Absolutely not. I’m confident of my body and I’m doing this to excite our boys to play better.”

Pandey received widespread media attention for her pledge, with the Times of India illustrating its story with a colour photograph of her wearing a skimpy bikini.

“Pray for Todays Match that the Boys Play well and make us Proud,” she said on her Twitter page ahead of India’s crunch semi-final game against Pakistan.

Her offer echoes that of Larissa Riquelme, a model who attracted global fame by pledging to run naked through the streets of Paraguay’s capital Asuncion if her country won the 2010 football World Cup.

Syrian government resigns: state television

DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accepted the resignation of the government on Tuesday, Syrian state television said.

“President Assad accepts the government’s resignation,” an announcement on state television said.

Assad was expected to address the nation later on Tuesday or Wednesday in a speech which may include a decision to abolish emergency laws, after two weeks of democracy protests gripped the country. AGENCIES

President Hosni refuses to step down

CAIRO: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak declined to capitulate to foreign pressure, saying he would not resign under present circumstances and would continue working till September.

Addressing the nation live on national television, Hosni announced that he would continue to hold power until a legal, peaceful transition can be made in elections in September.

President Mubarak said he is currently busy with steering country and nation out of the present crunch.

On this occasion, President Mubarak announced to delegate all presidential powers to Vice President Suleiman, saying the process of reconciliation has begun for the transition of power in Egypt.

Ultimatum Not in my Dictionary: Nawaz Sharif

Pakistan Muslim League (N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said the word of ultimatum was not in his dictionary and he didn’t give any ultimatum to the government.

Addressing a press conference in Raiwind, Nawaz said he is pleased that the prime minister has given positive response to his agenda.

He said Pakistan economy going down day by day. He said, “my agenda is prosperity of the nation.”

Gilani’s phone to Nawaz

Political leaders said on Monday that Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani’s telephone to PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif had eased political situation and described it as a democratic process and positive development.

Information Secretary of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Fauzia Wahab told VOA, “I believe we need the same atmosphere. If we want our country to make progress and weed out extremism and terrorism, we should unite otherwise we cannot achieve our goals.”

She said that the development would be good for the country, not only for Punjab but also for the Centre and added “We should remember that our survival is in democracy and powerful democratic institutions.”

About the possible appointment of PPP leader Latif Khosa as Punjab Governor, she said though she had not received any notification in this regard. If he is appointed, it will be a positive step, she said.

“I believe Latif Khosa is a well-known person of Punjab. Secondly, he has a great say in his own lawyer community,” she added.

Chairman of Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Raja Zafarul Haq said that Gilani’s phone to Nawaz Sharif would calm the political situation and perhaps the government started taking measures for the betterment of people.

A political analyst Professor Rasool Bukhsh Raees described the reconciliation between the country’s two major parties as a good omen for the nation and the country.

Quaid-e-Azams 135th birthday being celebrated today

The 135th birthday of the founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is being marked today throughout the country with zeal and fervor.

A change of guard ceremony was held at the mausoleum of the Father of the Nation. Cadets of the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), Kakul mounted the guard at the Mazar-e-Quaid. No Operation in Waziristan on Dictation: PM Gilani
