Maurice Lucas Dead at 58: Former NBA player Maurice Lucas, a forward for the Portland Trail Blazers, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer, the team said on its website. He was 58.

During that championship season, Lucas — known as “The Enforcer” — led the team in scoring, with 20.2 points, along with field goals made (8.0), free throws made (4.2), offensive rebounds (3.4) and minutes (36.2), according to the team.

In the 1977 playoffs, Lucas was the team-high scorer in eight of 19 games and led the team in rebounds twice. He is one of four three-time All-Stars in Trail Blazers history.

He most recently served as an assistant coach for the Trail Blazers from 1988-89 and again from 2005-10. The team honored him by retiring his number, 20, in 1988.

“Portland and the NBA lost one of their greats today,” team owner Paul Allen said in the website posting. “Maurice Lucas was an amazing man, and I count myself lucky to have known him. We all — players, coaches, the owner and the fans — were made better by having Maurice a part of our team, whether playing on the championship team, or most recently as an assistant coach.”

“He was one of the greatest Blazers ever,” Allen said. “I’ll miss him.” He offered his condolences to Lucas’ wife, Pamela, and their children.

As a student at Marquette University, Lucas led the school to the NCAA championship game in 1974, according to the Trail Blazers. Portland acquired him as the second pick in the 1976 ABA dispersal draft. He played 12 seasons in the NBA and four in the American Basketball Association, according to the Portland team’s website.

“Words cannot express the magnitude of loss we feel tonight with the passing of Maurice Lucas,” Larry Miller, Trail Blazers president, said in the statement. “The Trail Blazers family has lost our Enforcer, but for me personally, I have lost a brother.”

e06db78287w97tvl uscNCAA sanctions might force USC to vacate its Bowl Championship Series title-game victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, but the Trojans will remain national champions of the 2004 season in the Associated Press poll.

“The 2004 poll stands,” AP Sports Editor Terry Taylor confirmed in an e-mail to The Times. “The poll is intended to measure on-field performance. If teams are allowed to play, they’re allowed to be ranked and USC certainly played in 2004.”18b3db32c3usc 13 usc

There was speculation the AP might reconsider USC’s title because it recently called for a re-vote for NFL defensive rookie of the year. Brian Cushing, a former USC linebacker who plays for the Houston Texans, won the award but it was later announced that he had tested positive for a banned substance. Cushing kept his award after a second vote.
Taylor said USC’s 2004 national title was different.

“It would be impractical to revote,” Taylor said. “It’s been six years. Memories have faded and the poll board from that year is no longer intact.”

In 2003, USC finished No. 1 after the regular season in the AP and USA Today coaches’ poll but third in the BCS standings, preventing USC from playing in the BCS title game.

The AP, however, still crowned USC champions after the Trojans defeated Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Louisiana State won the BCS title with a victory over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

a7cdf7733ancaa national collegiate athletic associationLOS ANGELES – The NCAA threw the book at storied Southern California on Thursday with a two-year bowl ban, four years’ probation, loss of scholarships and forfeits of an entire year’s games for improper benefits to Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush dating to the Trojans’ 2004 national championship.

USC was penalized for a lack of institutional control in the ruling by the NCAA following its four-year investigation. The report cited numerous improper benefits for Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo, who spent just one year with the Trojans.d7144f4648e 2010 national collegiate athletic association

The coaches who presided over the alleged misdeeds — football’s Pete Carroll and basketball’s Tim Floyd — left USC in the past year. USC reacted with uniform outrage to the harshness of the sanctions, promising an appeal. I’m absolutely shocked and disappointed in the findings of the NCAA,” Carroll said in a video statement produced by the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, who hired him in January. “I never thought it would come to this.”

The penalties include the loss of 30 football scholarships over three years and vacating 14 victories in which Bush played from December 2004 through the 2005 season. USC beat Oklahoma in the BCS title game on Jan. 4, 2005, and won 12 games during Bush’s Heisman-winning 2005 season, which ended with a loss to Texas in the 2006 BCS title game.

Bill Hancock, the executive director of the BCS, said a committee will meet to consider vacating USC’s 2004 championship. While no action would go into effect until USC’s appeals are heard by the NCAA, Hancock said there would be no 2004 champion if USC’s victory is vacated.

“I take the same stance as our university,” new football coach Lane Kiffin said. “There is some guilt, but the punishment is too severe. That’s why the appeal process is taking place.”

nebraska big ten

912f5e420f004638 nebraska big tenKANSAS CITY, Mo. — College athletics are on the verge of a monumental shift, a realignment that could disintegrate one conference, turn others into 16-school goliaths and have huge financial implications on some of the biggest programs in the country.

The first card flipped on Thursday, when Colorado ditched the Big 12 for the Pac-10. Next up appear to be Nebraska and Missouri, both facing decisions that could spark another exodus and the collapse of the Big 12.

“(Now) the first move is made, I think you’ll see the dominos start falling,” said Joel Maxcey, sports economist at the University of Georgia.

It’s already been a wild ride.

The Big Ten started it off by exploring plans to expand, an effort it hoped would add more eyes to its successful cable network and reach the NCAA minimum of 12 teams required to hold a conference championship game in football.

The Big Ten’s big grab led to harried calls between rivals, political ploys and behind-the-scenes maneuvering as schools across the country look to make sure they’re not standing alone, pockets empty, when the music stops.

Colorado took a pre-emptive strike, deciding to head west to the Pac-10 instead of waiting to see what everyone else was going to do. The next move could come Friday, when Nebraska and Missouri face a stay-or-go ultimatum from the Big 12.

Nebraska seems most likely to go.

The Cornhuskers have long-standing ties with many of the schools in the Big 12’s North Division – they’ve played Kansas and Missouri in football since the 1890s – but Big Ten money might be too much to pass up.

LOS ANGELES — John Wooden was honored with a moment of silence before Game 2 of the NBA finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics on Sunday.

“It’s very difficult for me to put into words the greatness of John Wooden,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “He was so much more than a basketball coach. To have him in my life was a true blessing. I will always be grateful I was able to be one of his students.”

Abdul-Jabbar rushed back from Europe to visit Wooden at his hospital bedside before he died. Wooden’s teams won a record 10 NCAA championships at UCLA, including seven in a row.

Happily, by doing nothing, Bud did the right thing.

Requests for Selig to overturn umpire Jim Joyce’s call and bestow on Galarraga what he had earned came from scribes, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, the Internet mob… even the White House.

The appeals were silly, a case of heart overruling head.

They were unnecessary, too, because the principals involved in this unusual drama quickly and gracefully turned a baseball injustice into a poignant pageant of heartfelt regret, understanding and sportsmanship. Their generosity of spirit makes this story even bigger than a perfect game.

Joyce and Galarraga, as well as Tigers manager Jim Leyland and the rest of his club, handled their displeasure and frustration like adults.

Joyce distinguished himself by confessing that he blew the call. Tears in his eyes, he apologized to a

gracious Galarraga. Thursday afternoon, the umpire took the field in Detroit while shedding more tears.

Does that take him off the hook? Not at all. But fans who are always going on about the importance of the “human element” in baseball should be the first to applaud a genuine demonstration of humanity and humility from an unlikely source.Galarraga, Joyce and Detroit Tigers fans all exhibited remarkable sportsmanship considering the circumstances. …

Galarraga, believe it or not, was the 10th pitcher to lose a perfect game with two out in the ninth inning. …
