Nokia to axe 4,000 jobs, move assembly to Asia

HELSINKI: Struggling Finnish phone maker Nokia plans to cut 4,000 more jobs at its plants in Finland, Hungary and Mexico as it seeks to cut costs by moving smartphone assembly work to Asia.
The cuts of 8 percent of the phone business workforce bring total planned job cuts at the group since Stephen Elop took over as Chief Executive in September 2010 to more than 30,000.
Nokia said in a statement the job cuts would take place in phases through this year. It has been reviewing the operations since unveiling the closure of its Romania plant last September.
“This was inevitable. It was a surprise it took so long for the decision to be made,” said Steve Brazier, chief executive of technology research firm Canalys. “Stephen Elop may be a polarizing figure, but he is proving effective at driving the change and he should be credited for that.”
Nokia’s recent business results have underscored the need for drastic cuts. Late last month it reported a 73 percent fall in quarterly earnings as sales of new Windows Phones failed to dent the dominance of Apple Inc’s iPhone or compensate for diving sales of its own old smartphones.
Its fourth-quarter smartphone sales shrank 31 percent from a year ago and the business made a steep loss for the quarter.
NO MORE PHONES BUILT IN EUROPE
Nokia said it would cut 2,300 jobs in Hungary, where it is a major exporter, some 1,000 in Finland and 700 in Mexico. It will continue to tailor models for specific operators at all sites.
Its Finnish factory in Salo, which was the cornerstone for its success in 1990s, has been the last remaining major phone assembly plant in the Western Europe for some time. Most rivals have moved their production to Asia.
The Hungarian government said it regretted Nokia’s decision.
Analyst Gergely Suppan at Takarekbank in Budapest noted the highest value-added activities would stay in Hungary.
The move comes only months after Nokia closed its plant in neighboring Romania, laying off some 2,200 people there.
Finnish unions demanded hefty cash payments to laid-off staff and Antti Rinne, chief of union Pro, said the announcement was damaging for Finland’s employment outlook.
“Raising the employment level and prolonging working careers is impossible if there are no jobs in Finland,” Rinne said in a statement.
Finland has pushed for years to prolong working careers as the Nordic country struggles with a shrinking work force and sluggish economic growth.
Nokia announced in April last year it would cut 7,000 jobs and unveiled a further 3,500 job losses in September. Its network arm Nokia Siemens announced cuts of 17,000 in November.
The group had 130,000 staff at the end of 2011, including Nokia Siemens.
Shares in Nokia were 1.2 percent higher at 3.93 euros, slightly outperforming the technology share index which rose 0.3 percent, by 5:53 a.m. ET. AGENCIES

Microsoft’s Ballmer and Ozzie tag-team on mediocrity
Microsoft Silverlight is a browser plug-in that allows the Microsoft .Net developed internet applications to run smoothly on the browser. This plug-in basically enables the .Net internet applications to find a familiar environment to be able to execute in. The Silverlight plug-in is mainly developed so that it could help a browser display high definition video content, smoother browsing and better security features for the internet. Silverlight is usually used in conjunction with the Microsoft IIS that helps in smooth streaming.
A couple of days ago Nvidia demonstrated 3D video streaming on their new PC that is specifically optimized for 3D performance. The PC is called the Nvidia 3D Vision PC and it is capable of extreme 3D application execution.
The demonstration of the 3D video was done by installing Microsoft Silverlight for the browser and Microsoft IIS. After a little setup, an online 3D video started that showed intensely immersive graphics just like watching a running game or a render in 3D Studio Max. The experience was simply astonishing and the possibility of 3D video streaming in the future really boggles the mind.
Ballmer didn’t have a straight answer to this question from the floor, but provided a half-baked reply, “My guess is if it did, it would be blocked”, unclear about the Android part of the question.
What remains unanswered is why Microsoft will continue to develop a product that has no future, given that Microsoft lacks a stronghold in smartphone arena. He could’ve mentioned that SIlverlight would be available on iPhone as soon as Apple sanctions it. More so, he could have talked about their tie with Google for developing an Android port. Given these, Ballmer could have taken it to Nokia Symbian port.
That was a gift. You would expect the two men to enthuse about how Microsoft’s dominance with desktop Office was now including the cloud as well, how the Office Web Apps enable new opportunities for collaboration, how Microsoft’s investment in XML for Office was now enabling the same document to live both on the desktop and in the cloud.
Nope. Ozzie waffles about people being more connected. Ballmer “disputes the notion that everything is moving to the cloud”.

Nokia X3 and E52 Available in India
Two of Nokia’s phones, announced last year, Nokia and Nokia E52 X3, will supposedly debut this week in India.
Two Nokia phones will make its debut in India this week, Nokia E52 and Nokia X3. Nokia X3 is an entry level phone that features a 2.2 inch QVGA screen, dedicated music keys, FM radio, and 3.2 MP camera and microSD card support. The X3 will retail for around 7,500 INR or $ 165.
Nokia E52 is noticeably a Symbian Eseries smartphone, and it is the successor to the E51. It has a 2.4 inch QVGA display, Wi-Fi, GPS, with free Nokia Maps, navigation, 3.5 mm headphone jack, 3.2MP camera with flash, video call camera, and microSD card support. Nokia E52 will cost 13,000 INR, or about $ 287.

Nokia C3, C6 and E5 launch 3 new handsets in medium range
