FIMMVORDUHALS NEWS: The ground shakes, belching fumes and spewing lava, but this has not deterred throngs of thrill-seekers and tourists flocking to see Iceland’s active volcano, at times risking their lives.
“What was most amazing was to hear the rumbling noise,” said an exhilarated Aslaug Gudrunardottir, who said she stood only a few metres (yards) from melting lava.
“It was like standing on top of an ancient monster down in the ground. It is a sound that is impossible to imagine,” she told AFP back down at the foot of the mountain.
The Fimmvorduhals volcano in the middle of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted on March 21, the country’s first such volcanic explosion since 2004 and the first in the Eyjafjallajokull area since 1823.
It forced some 600 people to briefly evacuate their homes in this remote, lightly populated area 125 kilometres (75 miles) east of the capital Reykjavik.
But it has since turned into a boon for a local hotel and a few bus firms offering twilight tours — and a headache for police and rescue workers.
News from geologists this weekend that the eruption may be peaking and could soon “diminish dramatically” sent thousands of visitors rushing to catch a rare glimpse of a real live volcano and the majestic “lava falls”, with red-hot burning lava cascading hundreds of metres down a gorge.
Cars stood bumper to bumper in Fljotshlid, across from the glacier, as hundreds of people made their way up to the smouldering peak by foot, snowmobile, helicopter, even motorcycle.
A popular hiking trail, it was re-opened last week though police warned anyone taking it they did so at their own risk.
“People do not understand the danger. That is what our rescuers have been saying all weekend,” moaned Bryndis Harardottir of the Ice-Star rescue service. “It is an eruption, which is dangerous, even if it is majestic and beautiful.”
A number of tourists had wandered into areas that could easily have been cut off by the lava flow, she told AFP.
“People have been going too close to the crater and putting themselves in danger as there can be explosions at any time. They forget that this is a volcano,” she said.
Even without the eruption, trekking the 1,100 metres (3,600 feet) to the top of Fimmvorduhals is not child’s play. This weekend, the wind chill alone sent temperatures down to minus 30 degrees C (minus 22 degrees F).
“People have to be in good shape and dressed for the conditions,” which was not always the case this weekend, Harardottir said.
Rescue workers brought down several ill-equipped tourists, including one “dressed in jeans and a leather jacket showing signs of hypothermia.”
Geologists warned that the Fimmvorduhals volcano could set off the nearby and much larger Katla volcano, but so far it has shown no signs of activity.
For some, Fimmvorduhals was not their first volcano.
“This is my fourth eruption,” filmmaker Olafur Rognvaldsson told AFP, staring up at the orange-red glowing mountaintop from a safe distance.
“I got very close to Krafla last time it erupted,” he said referring to a volcano in northeast Iceland that exploded in 1984. “We walked up there with a group of tourists on the first day of the eruption, right up to the crater.”
“It was a great tour, but in hindsight it wasn’t a very smart thing to do,” he chuckled.
Despite hindsight, Rognvaldsson still wanted to take a helicopter to get a closer look at the fiery Fimmvorduhals, then get out to explore the ridge of the crater.
“It is a very beautiful sight from a distance, but it is totally different to experience it from up close,” he said.

Ipad Lines, Apple’s iPad goes on sale this morning, and hundreds (thousands?) of people are currently standing in line around the world to get theirs. (Well, okay, technically, just in the U.S.; International sales start in a few weeks.)
It’s pretty amazing, really, considering this is a $500 to $700 computer they’re in line to buy — not a $199 iPhone.
The longest lines seem to be, naturally, in New York City, where people line up for anything (burgers in a park, movie tickets, every iPhone), but people are tweeting out pictures from all over the place.

Easter Bunny Tracker

Easter Bunny Tracker, Children across the world will be anticipating the arrival of the legendary Easter Bunny sometime late Saturday night or during the early morning hours of Easter Sunday.
Children and their parents will be able to track the leaps and bounds of the Easter Bunny by using the iPhone Easter Bunny Tracker application.
The application has been made available for download exclusively to iPhone users for a low fee. The Easter Bunny Tracker will allow users to track the Bunny’s movements through the use of a radar map. There has been speculation on the internet as to whether or not NORAD would provide an Easter Bunny tracker much like the one that they do for the arrival of Santa Claus at Christmas. These reports have not been confirmed.
There are multiple websites popping up like carrots that allow children to send email and postal letters to the Easter Bunny. Another website called Track the Easter Bunny promises to provide a radar map coverage much like the one NORAD provides for Santa. The site appears leaves parents curious however as it is not yet fully up and running.

Elijah Wood Girlfriend
Elijah Wood Girlfriend, Elijah Wood and Robin Williams are in negotiations to reprise their penguin alter egos in Happy Feet 2, the follow-up to the 2006 computer animated musical about a young tap-dancing social outcast named Mumble amongst a society of uncannily talented singing penguins. But under the tutelage of some funky fresh penguins including Ramon and the master of funk Lovelace (both voiced by Williams) Mumble gets the courage to be true to himself and his happy feet. The sequel’s story is being kept under wraps but George Miller is writing and directing again.
Next up Variety says Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) will be joining Liam Neeson, January Jones and Diane Kruger in Orphan director Jaume Collet-Serra’s action thriller Unknown White Male. The story follows a doctor (Neeson) who, while visiting Berlin with his wife (Jones), is in a car accident that leaves him in a coma. He awakens to find that he has been inexplicably replaced by another man, leading the good doctor on a frantic quest to uncover the truth behind his stolen identity. Langella plays Cole, who comes forward as the doctor’s colleague and just might be able to help him take back his life. Hopefully Langella will still be speaking like Richard Nixon in this and all following roles.
Meanwhile, THR reports that Kate Bosworth (superman Returns) has joined director Jean-Marc Vallee’s next film Lost Girls and Love Hotels, which tells the story of a woman (Bosworth) who tries to forget her past while working in Tokyo as an English specialist at a stewardess training institute by day and losing herself in a sex- and drug-addled oblivion by night. She finds herself on the road to redemption when she becomes interested in a missing Western girl. Do you smell that? It’s a traditional fresh baked indie film about someone who comes close to actually ends up hitting rock bottom forcing them to find and redeem themselves. Maybe The Smiths or even Elliot Smith will be on the soundtrack too!
Finally, THR has a casting announcement for Brother’s Keeper, a PG-rated family drama being produced by WWE Films. Yes, that WWE, so it’s no surprise that wresting champion turned sub-par actor John Cena will be joining Patricia Clarkson, Danny Glover, Devon Graye and Madeleine Martin. Director Mel Damski, who has recently directed episodes of USA’s Psych, hasn’t directed a feature film since 1985’s Mischief will be responsible for the story of a teenage boy (Graye) who tries to reunite his mother (Clarkson) and estranged older brother (Cena) 10 years after the death of their father, a state college wrestling legend. A brilliant student with no apparent athletic talents, the teenager decides to join the high school wrestling team as a way to pull the family together. He will come of age, oh yes, he will come of age.
