NATO captures insurgent leader in east Afghanistan

KABUL: NATO says it has captured a leader of a Pakistan-based Taliban faction closely tied to al-Qaida.
The military coalition said Sunday the militant, from the Haqqani network, was picked up on Nov. 25 in the eastern Afghan province of Khost. He was accused of carrying out remote-controlled roadside bombings targeting coalition bases and convoys.
The capture brings the number of senior Haqqani leaders captured this month to 20.
Although NATO forces have poured troops into the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand and have been making progress in rolling back the Taliban, fighting has continued in the eastern provinces where the Haqqani network holds sway. AGENCIES
Govt. terminates 484 development projects due to financial dearth

ISLAMABAD: The government on Saturday, has terminated 484 development projects worth 15.5 billion because of financial scarcity.
According to the documents of Planning Commission of Pakistan (PCP), the number of projects included in annual development program has been reduced from 1905 to 1421.
The PCP said that terminated projects were unnecessary.
Sources told that the reasons behind the end of these projects were financial dearth while the government had not released even 20 percent of the funds for the development program for the public projects in last five months.
The PCP said that priority has been given to those projects which are about to complete. The government prioritizes projects of infrastructure, energy, water and transport and social sector. Trend Pk
Obama sees end to Afghan combat mission by 2014

LISBON: President Barack Obama said for the first time on Saturday his goal was to end the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and to significantly reduce the number of U.S. troops deployed there by then.
His remarks, made at the end of a NATO summit in Lisbon, surprised, as earlier in the day top aides had told reporters that Washington was not yet ready to commit to such a target.
“My goal is to make sure that by 2014 we have transitioned, Afghans are in the lead, and it is a goal to make sure we are not still engaged in combat operations of the sort we are involved in now,” Obama told a news conference.
He said the United States endorsed NATO’s plan to transfer security responsibility to Afghan security forces by 2014, but stressed that counter-terrorism operations against al Qaeda in the region would likely continue after that
US aspires to increase military personnel in Asia, says Gates
The US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has said that the USA aspires to increase the number of its military personnel in the Asian region. Speaking while leaving for security talks in Australia, Robert Gates said that Pentagon is making it sure that the US Army keeps an eye on the Indian Ocean, besides Far East and South East Asia.
Congo virus kills 3, infects 11 in Hazara Division

HARIPUR: Congo virus in Hazara Division killed three people and left another 11 infected, Trend Pk reported Tuesday.
According to reports, three patients were tested positive for Congo virus at Ayub Medical College, bringing to 11 the number of affected patients over the past month and a half.
Many patients suspected of Congo disease are under treatment in different hospitals of the Hazara Division and their blood samples have been sent to Islamabad for clinical tests. Trend Pk
Punjab: Another 45 dengue patients reported
Surge in the number of dengue patients continued across the country as another 45 affectees have been brought to the hospitals in the last 24 hours in Punjab alone, Dunya News reported on Tuesday.
In the last 24 hours a staggering number of 183 patients have been tested positive for dengue fever, raising the total figure of dengue affected patients to a whopping 1,700.
Eleven more cases from cities other than Lahore have also been reported, pushing up the number of patients suffering from dengue fever to 1,359. Fumigation is underway across the country.

KARACHI: Hundreds of trees have been chopped off along Shara-e-Faisal, one of the main boulevards in Karachi, due to advertising hoardings and sign boards.
Special safety measures are taken across the world to save trees, which are vital for health and the environment. However, the situation is the complete opposite in Karachi where large numbers of trees were cut down to save sign boards.
Presently, Pakistan ranks second in the global tree cutting index. If this process continues, the number of trees by 2020 will reduce to an alarming level. SAMAA
No let-up in Karachi violence; toll risen to 49
The ruthless murders of another 14 people on Tuesday pushed the number of those killed within four days of unabated targeted killing to 47.
Unidentified miscreants set afire a bus at Karimabad, while Asif was gunned down at Malir Dadu Goth in firing by some unknown felons. Tortured bodies of a man and woman were found from Manghu Pir, whereas some bodies were also recovered from Gulshan Iqbal, Moti Mahal and Awami Colony. Two dead bodies of youths, who were kidnapped earlier and later shot dead, were found from Eid Gah locality on Monday night, police said. Another dead body, having marks of brutal torture, was found near Moti Mahal in Gulshan-e-Iqbal locality.Two more persons, including a security guard, were gunned down in Liaquatabad town. Four unidentified men were shot and killed in Site Area, Baldia Town, Methadar and Gulshan-e-Iqbal areas.
Heavy police and rangers contingents are in positioned in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, police and rangers have claimed arresting more than 80 suspected miscreants who were allegedly involved in target killings, rampaging, torching vehicles, and triggering riots in city.
