The NBA playoffs continue, with a bit of a lull in some of the beginning rounds.
There have been surprises, and something unexpected happened. The Phoenix Suns beat the San Antonio Spurs in tremendous fashion.
The Lakers have been the Lakers, squeezing by their opponents in this year’s playoffs. However, they have not faced a team like the Suns yet.
The Suns have finally gotten their act together after an absence from the playoffs, and controversial rumors such as trading Amer’e Stoudemire have settled down due to their success.
In the Suns-Lakers series, there are several key match-ups to keep your eyes on that will determine who comes out the victor in one of the more intriguing series in this year’s NBA playoffs.
The Lakers won 57 games, yet their 25 losses stuck out much more prominently. They flopped in their Christmas Day showdown with Cleveland, lost an NBA finals rematch at Orlando, and dropped games against several of the West’s top teams, including Dallas and Denver, before closing the season with a dismal 4-7 stretch.
“In playoff basketball, we have another gear,” center Andrew Bynum said. “I think we’re playing like that right now as a team. Collectively, we just picked it up. When we get to the playoffs, we’re focused.”
When eighth-seeded Oklahoma City won twice at home to even the clubs’ first-round series, the Lakers appeared to be injured, tired and scrambling. Instead, they’ve been smooth operators for two perfect weeks, culminating in two victories in Salt Lake City.
The Lakers silenced the Jazz’s notoriously ornery fans by committing just 14 turnovers in those two games combined, making a late rally to win Game 3 before romping through Monday’s clincher. Even when Utah trimmed a 22-point first-half deficit to five points, Los Angeles simply kept executing on offense and working hard on defense, gradually running the Jazz out of their own building.

The top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a tightly-contested 96-94 win over the Chicago Bulls Tuesday, but the victory was overshadowed by an injury scare to LeBron James. James fell just short of his second straight triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, but was forced to shoot a free throw left-handed after aggravating a right elbow injury late in the game.
“(The injury) has been going on for a few weeks. Hopefully it doesn’t continue to bother me as we move forward,” James told reporters.
The reigning league MVP said he had had x-rays during his team’s day off and they had revealed no structural damage.
“We’re trying to figure it out,” he added. “It just feels like when you hit your funny bone and sometimes you can’t feel it.”
Cleveland will now face the Boston Celtics, who wrapped up their series 4-1 with a 96-86 win over the Miami Heat on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers had a team-high 25 points from Antawn Jamison, who made a three-pointer in the final minutes to give his team a 93-84 lead that proved decisive despite a late Bulls charge.
Derrick Rose scored a game-high 31 points and Luol Deng added 26 for the Bulls, who missed a shot inside to surrender possession with 10 seconds remaining.
In the Western conference, the Los Angeles Lakers reasserted control of their series with an 111-87 pounding of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Pau Gasol had 25 points and 11 rebounds and fellow seven-footer Andrew Bynum added 21 and 11 as the NBA champions took a 3-2 series lead heading into Game Six in Oklahoma City Friday.
In Dallas, the Mavericks rebounded for an emphatic 103-81 win over the San Antonio Spurs to cut their series deficit to 3-2.

The founder of a beer named after an American Revolutionary hero is pushing for Patriot’s Day to become a national holiday.
Jim Koch, founder and owner of the Boston Beer Co., the maker of Sam Adams, says he is launching a personal campaign and starting a petition to begin a movement for the national holiday.
Koch said if Patriot’s Day was a national holiday, more Americans would understand the nation’s “revolutionary spirit” and how much the Founder Fathers risked their lives.
He said Patriot’s Day would be a reminder about the creation of a modern democracy.
