0f203b9fphy 600x250 doGOODERS of the week: the cast of GLEE

You may love Fox’s hit show GLEE for it’s feel-good, musically-inspired fun, but we’re loving GLEE’s cast for their commitment to so many awesome causes. The cast of GLEE has catapulted to stardom this year, and they’re using their newfound fame to raise funds and awareness for nonprofits in some philanthropic-forward ways. From teaming up with American Express to “change the world” to putting their smiling faces on the auction block at charitybuzz, we love how GLEE is inspiring Gleeks all over the world to join in to do good.

Throughout 2010, GLEE has tackled important issues on screen, from equality to body image, and the show was nominated for a GLAAD award for their outstanding portrayal of the LGBT community. This week, GLEE added 5 Golden Globe nominations to their list of accolades. Off screen, the show has had an equally impressive impact. Last month, the cast raised $100,000 for Education Through Music by partnering with American Express and even spent a day making musical instruments with children from a disadvantaged local elementary school. They also took to the internet to encourage people around the world to give back with a laugh-out-loud funny social media campaign pitting “Mr. Shue” against “Sue.” Musical education has become a pet cause for the show, with tickets to several exclusive parties for GLEE’s premiere earlier this year sold to benefit the Grammy Foundation’s Grammy in the Schools education program.

Staff Report

LAHORE: Suspended duo Salman Butt and pacer Mohammad Asif asked the Pakistan Cricket Board to release their outstanding match fees and bonuses since the Twenty20 World Cup earlier this year.

Butt and Asif have written to the Pakistan Cricket Board to release the money.

Butt, who along with pacers Asif and Mohammad Aamer were suspended on suspicion of spot fixing, confirmed he had written to the PCB for release of an amount of approximately Rs 8.7 million ($101,000).

“I am facing a lot of difficulties now because of not having received any of my outstanding amount from the board, this amount goes back to the Twenty20 World Cup and includes match fees, win bonuses and shares from logo sponsorships,” Butt said.

Zakir Khan, the director of PCB’s international cricket operations, confirmed receiving emails for release of

Butt takes inspiration from Imran heroics

NOTTINGHAM: Pakistan captain Salman Butt hopes some of the magic of Imran Khan, his cricket hero, will rub off when he leads the team in the first Test against England here on Thursday.

Butt”s captaincy debut went better than even the most fervent Pakistan supporter could have hoped with a three-wicket second Test win against Australia at Headingley last week – Pakistan”s first Test victory over the Aussies in 15 years.

However, Butt would be the first to acknowledge he has a way to go to match the captaincy achievements of Imran, the outstanding all-rounder of the 1980s, who led Pakistan to their only World Cup title in 1992.

“Imran Khan was the greatest captain of all time that Pakistan have had,” Butt said at Trent Bridge here on Wednesday.

“It was the courage he showed – because when he started he had very limited resources, and he picked players who hadn”t even played first-class cricket and he made them world-beaters.

“To pick a person from nowhere, and know the ability he has will shine for him one day, is something to admire,” opening batsman Butt added.

“Then the courage to put them in straightaway, and allow them to be themselves, is something not many people have.

“That is the best way for a person to do well – relax and be yourself. When you try to be something else, I don”t think it works for most people.”

Butt was promoted from vice-captain after Shahid Afridi quit Test cricket following the team”s 150-run series opening loss to Australia.

Asked if he”d experienced any surprises as Pakistan captain, Butt told media: “There have been no surprises as yet – but maybe the way it came to me was a bit of a surprise.”

Pakistan played their ”home” series against Australia in England after international cricket was suspended in their own country following an armed attack on Sri Lanka”s team bus in Lahore in March last year.

“It”s a lovely place to play cricket,” Butt said of England. “There are a lot of Pakistanis living over here, so the support is good.

“Of course, the number one priority would be to play in Pakistan,” the 25-year-old added. “But with the unfortunate situation which is currently going on, I think England is the best option.”

This Test series is England”s last before they begin the defence of the Ashes in Australia, starting in November.

It is nearly 25 years since they last won a Test series in Australia and England captain Andrew Strauss said: “We”re not necessarily where we want to be, but I think we”re making improvements.

“My first series in charge we lost to the West Indies, then beat the West Indies and won the Ashes.

“I think there”s a nice progression there – but there are areas we need to improve, no doubt about that,” the opening batsman added.

0dd0724414small ny1If you don’t pay your taxes, you can be sure the government will come after you. So, one Staten Island man wonders why then the government can hold on to his money without consequences? NY1’s Susan Jhun filed the following “NY1 For You” report.
As a retired member of the New York City Police Department, John Carroll says he wants what he’s owed.

“Members from the police, fire, corrections, and sanitation were eligible for a social security refund if they were injured in the line of duty for less than six months. The years covered 1989 through 2005,” says Carroll.

Carroll qualified for the years 1989 through 1993 and has received refunds for all these years except 1991 and 1992.

“I was I contacted by the New York City Payroll Division and they said we have not received the money from the IRS yet, however you are eligible along with thousands of other members,” says Carroll.

Carroll was patient and waited. But after almost a year and a half he contacted the payroll division again.

“No change. We don’t know why those two years were withheld. We have no idea when the money is going to be released. The money does gain interest, and it is reportable income,” says Carroll. “I don’t think the IRS should be in the “for savings business.” Whether there’s interest on it or not, again the time frame is such that it’s been a year and a half and I’ve gotten no further than, than I have in the past.”

Out of frustration, Carroll called “NY1 For You.” We called the Office of Payroll Administration, OPA, and they released the following statement:

“The Federal Government finally paid the City the full amount due on the outstanding LoDI claims. The 1991-1992 Uniformed LoDI FICA refunds were delayed due to the reconciliation of interest paid on the claims by the IRS. This reconciliation is now complete for 1991 and nearly complete for 1992.”

OPA told “NY1 For You” that refunds for ‘91 will be sent this month and refunds covering ‘92 will be sent next month.

Thaw at last in Pak-India relations

THIMPHU: The prime ministers of Pakistan and India have agreed to normalize bilateral relations stalled after Mumbai attacks, saying the only way forward is through dialogue.

Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani held a meeting with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh here at the PM house of Bhutan.

The one-on-one meeting between the two prime ministers lasted for one hour. Earlier, the two leaders spoke with each other for ten-minute in the presence of delegations of the two countries.

Following the above meeting, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Indian foreign secretary Nirupama Rao held separate press conferences here.

Qureshi described the meeting as highly positive which discussed all the outstanding issues including Kashmir and Siachin.

He said Pakistan Prime Minister invited Manmohan Singh to visit Pakistan which the latter accepted.

Yusuf Raza Gilani assured his Indian counterpart that Pakistan will bring to justice the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks.

In reply to a query, Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the extradition of Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor who was allegedly involved in Mumbai attacks, did not come under discussion at the meeting.

He informed that interior ministers of SAARC countries would have a meeting in Pakistan on 26th June, which he hoped would also be attended by Indian home minister.

Qureshi said the two sides have admitted presence of a trust deficit between the two countries. “The foreign ministers and foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India have been tasked with bridging the trust gap …. it is foreign ministers’ job to eliminate the trust deficit.”

He said all the outstanding issues will be resolved at the dialogue table.

Indian foreign secretary Nirupama Rao also declared the meeting between the two PMs as positive.

“Prime Minister expressed India”s concern over the slow progress of Mumbai trial in Pakistan to Prime Minister Gilani,” Rao said.

Singh told Gilani that India was willing to discuss all issues of mutual concern through dialogue but the issue of terrorism is holding back the progress, she said.

It was decided by the two prime ministers that foreign ministers and foreign secretaries of the two countries should meet as soon as possible to “restore trust and confidence” in the relations, said Rao.
