13d0fadb32att 01 university of coloradoThe University of Colorado has officially received and accepted an invite to the Pacific Ten Conference.

This news wasn’t unexpected, as Colorado has looked like a lock for the Pacific Ten since both theirs and Utah’s names were mentioned earlier this year. The move also signals the collapse of the Big 12 – which could be made even more official by the end of the week when Nebraska, following speculation, decides to join the Big Ten.

What will be left is a fractured conference thaThe Pac-10 announced this afternoon that the University of Colorado has accepted an invitation to join the conference.

The Buffaloes leave the Big 12 to come out West.

This might spell the beginning of the end to the Big 12, as it’s expected that Nebraska is going to soon be joining the Big 10. t should, at least by mid-summer, lose its two best programs when Oklahoma and Texas join Colorado in the newly established Big Sixteen – the first true mega-conference of the BCS era.

It’s unclear what the Big Ten will do now, but expect them to push their numbers up to sixteen as well and the SEC will probably follow in the future, though they have more wiggle room due to how dominant many perceive their conference.

The Buffaloes, despite their recent issues on the field, will be a good addition to the conference. They will provide a boost to conference television revenues by giving the Pac-10 a good footing in the Denver market, and culturally fit the Pac-10 nicely. No matter what happens in the next few days, Colorado is a great addition.

e4f3381f5200x231 bp ceoIn between the “We’re sorrys” and “It’ll be alrights,” BP CEO Tony Hayward finally got around to what we’ve all been waiting for: outlining its long-term plans for the Gulf. In short, BP is laying the groundwork for a sustained damage-control operation — one aimed at the Gulf, its business and its public image.

At which point, you’d be perfectly justified in asking: What took him so long?

Here are a few of the more revealing items that came up in the conference call.

Isolating BP’s disaster operations
BP will reorganize its the Gulf of Mexico disaster operations into a new division. No word yet on what the unit will be called, although there will be plenty of sarcastic suggestions from the locals and media. Bob Dudley, a BP exec — well-respected one, according to the Guardian — who used to manage the company’s Russian TNK-BP unit, will head this new Gulf of Mexico division. On a sidenote: TNK-BP’s subsidiary RUSIA Petroleum filed for bankruptcy Thursday, following a long and unprofitable plan to sell Russian natural gas to China.

Hayward didn’t give specifics on what this “separate, stand alone organization” will look like, making it ambiguous enough to mean many things. Hayward cast the move as a way to keep the focus on the oil spill disaster without distracting BP from its other operations.

Most likely, this is an accounting move that will allow BP to put its toxic oil spill assets in one place and then make a massive impairment write down. Whether Hayward thought of this weeks ago, isn’t clear. But the timing of it — the day after Moody’s BP execs are proving to be Wizards from Oz hunkered behind the curtain bellowing. And when we pull the curtain back, there is nothing but the worst Lilliputian leaders lingering there.

Let’s shift to the context of the world of the university. Eisenhower briefly served as president of Columbia University after the end of WWII and before the political tugs of a military leader of his stature led him to become U.S. President. Suppose professors at a major university report concerns to their president and senior officials about the potential for a leak of radiation from a lab. The president and leadership team bring in an outside consultant as BP did (let’s hope there is no Halliburton in academe) to assess things and make a temporary fix. There follows a radiation leak into the surrounding campus and neighborhood that goes on for days, maybe weeks. How long would that university president remain in the leadership post? Methinks not long.

pac ten expansion

pac ten expansionNews broke this week that the Pac-10 Conference is in the throes of serious expansion consideration. For weeks, we heard about the Big Ten’s pursuit of turning its league into a power conference. Now it is the Pac-10 that is grabbing headlines with its reported pursuit of some of the biggest names and brands in college football.

The Pac-10’s expansion plans are bold and possibly earth-shattering for college football if the conference gets its way.

So, what is in the cards? Who is involved and what does it mean for the power brokers engaged in the talks

73097215b0pac10 pac 10SEATTLE – Could the Dawgs and Cougs be joining the likes of the Longhorns and Aggies?

That’s the buzz tonight on the eve of the annual Pac-10 conference in San Francisco.

Published reports indicate the Pac-10 may soon offer six schools an invite to the conference: Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Colorado. The conference would span three time zones, and include seven of the top television markets.

Expansion has been a hot-button issue in college athletics, as institutions look to maximize financial possibilities during the economic downturn. The popular opinion is any expansion would also include the creation of a Pac-10, or in this scenario, a Pac-16 television network and millions of additional revenue.

That money could be vital to the UW’s hopes to renovate Husky Stadium.

Colorado Athletic Director Mike Bohn told the Boulder Daily Camera that he had been “led to believe” the Pac-10 was “on the verge” of issuing invitations to the six schools

The six teams from the Big 12 would be in an eight-team division with Arizona and Arizona State. The other eight-team division would consist of USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.

The thought is the Big 16 (or whatever they decide for the name) would start its own television network that could command premium subscriber dollars from cable providers on par with the Big Ten Network and pay out upwards of $20 million to each of the 16 schools in TV revenue.

Such a merger between the six Big 12 schools and the Pac-10 would build a conference with seven of the country’s top 20 TV markets (Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, Phoenix, Seattle and Sacramento). And such a league would likely command attention from every cable system in the country and command a premium rate from every cable system west of the Mississippi.

Those projected TV revenues would double the current payouts of roughly $9 million to Big 12 and Pac-10 members. If the Big 16 reached its projections, the league would also surpass the SEC’s projected payout of $17 million per school reached in a 15-year TV deal with ABC/ESPN and CBS signed in 2008.

* Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott has said all along that everything was on the table — that he would explore all options for increasing revenue and then present them to his CEOs for approval or rejection.

e990c64e6ciberty uss libertyIsraeli occupation forces massacred 16 activists on board the Gaza-bound “Freedom” flotilla Sunday overnight and Monday, according to the Israeli TV. 60 other people were also injured. Early reports said that 10 activists were killed.

The killing took place in international waters. Among the injured, leader of the Islamic Movement’s northern branch in the occupied territories Sheikh Raed Salah whose injuries are serious, according to reports.

Israeli marine commandos had opened fire as they stormed one of the ships the (Mavi Marmara). Israeli television justified the commandos’ massacre claiming that the soldiers were attacked with knives and axes, but did not elaborate. The Israeli censor blocks all reports on the activists murdered on the flotilla.
The Liberty crew managed to send an SOS, heard by nearby U.S. Sixth Fleet aircraft carriers. Fighter planes launched immediately, however turned back on orders from President Johnson. Naval personnel listening to radio relays heard Johnson say “I don’t care if the ship sinks, I’m not going to embarrass an ally.”

Israel claimed it was a case of “mistaken identity,” in other words, “friendly fire.” Israel’s ludicrous explanation was that pilots thought the USS Liberty was El Quseir, an Egyptian vessel having 1/4 of Liberty’s displacement and half the beam. El Quseir was 180 feet shorter and very differently configured. The Liberty had her name clearly written in English, while the Egyptian ship would have displayed Arabic script.

There are several motives for Israel’s deliberate attack: to prevent the USS Liberty from transmitting intelligence pertaining to massacres by Israeli troops which were taking place in the Golan Heights and that the 1967 War did indeed result from a pre-emptive strike by Israel. The attack could have been used to draw the U.S. into the 1967 War as well. Most of the Liberty’s survivors believe that Israel’s goal was to sink the ship and kill everyone aboard. Had there been no survivors, the attack could have been pinned on an Arab country.

quebec forest firesQuebec forest fires black out skies
MONTREAL — Thick smoke billowing from forest fires in Quebec’s backcountry sparked smog alerts Montreal and the US city of Boston, and put city firefighters in Ottawa on alert Monday, officials said.

Fifty-two blazes burned north of Montreal, eight of them out of control, blackening thousands of hectares of forests in Quebec, the Quebec forest fire protection unit (Sopfeu) said.

In Ottawa, residents awoke to a strong smell of smoke, and fire crews were dispatched to all corners of the capital city to monitor approaching fires.

In Montreal, a smog alert was announced for much of the southern part of the province, along the Saint Lawrence seaway.

South of the border, the US National Weather Service issued air quality alerts for the border states of Maine and New Hampshire, as well as Massachusetts, with the thickest smoke reaching Cape Cod and Nantucket.

“Smoke from a number of large fires in southern Quebec has begun to move over portions of southwest New Hampshire… as well as eastern Massachusetts,” the US National Weather Service said.

By evening, winds were expected to shift back to a west to southwest direction and “push the smoke back out to sea,” it added.

The Quebec public health agency urged “vulnerable people to take precautions,” noting that “smog affects mostly people with respiratory or cardiac illnesses, and children with asthma.”

The weather service said northwest winds were expected to continue through Sunday night, but that they were expected to shift to the southwest on Monday afternoon and bring an end to the smoky conditions.

About 1,200 firefighters are battling the flames, including 1,000 from Quebec and the remainder from the U.S. and Canadian provinces such as British Columbia, Lemay said.

more games. Florida International will be seeded in the 64 team field and placed into one of the regional brackets which get announced on Monday, May 31st. It will give FIU and Garret Wittels a chance to shine even more when the schedule kicks into place.

Washington State finished the season with a 34-20 overall record, posting a 15-12 record in a very tough Pac-10 Conference. Pointing to how tough the conference was this year, Arizona State, which won the regular season Pac-10 championship, is the No. 1 overall seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. There are several other Pac-10 teams that made the tournament as well, including UCLA, Oregon, and Arizona just to name a few. Coastal Carolina leads the nation with 51 wins and won all 25 of their games to take the Big South Conference crown.

The 2009 USC football game vs. UCLA will be aired on food security and nutrition with a start time of 7:00 PM PST. The game will take place in the Coliseum, with the advantage could be said that any house for any of these teams in California. It has recently a struggle for both teams, but UCLA in search of something to build off of, and USC trying to prove they are not an overrated college team, both eager to win this rivalry. Now both the UCLA and USC are eligible plate, and that means we both are here to prove they belong to one of the great bowl games in the program in 2009.

Now USC is in sixth place in the Pac-10 qualifying with a 4-3 conference record, and realistically need to finish at 6-3 in the conference so that one of the best bowl games that Pac-10 are invited. USC gets its game against UCLA this week and after its season finale against Arizona on Dec. 5 to prove they belong in that good bowl game, but both victories opponents want these so bad. UCLA is in seventh place in the Pac-10 with a 3-5 conference record so far. They are going to finish in seventh place, no matter what, but you really need the victory to his overall record look better invitation to bowl committees.

They have already qualified to be invited to a bowl game, but would be much better if you can finish the season at 7-5, and would also be much more respectable in the final page of the classification. Leaving aside the bowl implications of this game for both USC and UCLA, is also very important to recognize how bad that both sides want to win this game. UCLA is in this for the level of respect and USC wants to prove that they are still the best team in California, despite a few losses they have suffered recently.
