Amelia Earhart Clue Found
Scientific investigations have revealed that human DNA may be present in fragments of material that could provide crucial information about the fate of Amelia Earhart, the legendary pilot who disappeared 74 years ago while flying over the Pacific Ocean in a record attempt to circle the world at the equator. Scientists at the University of Oklahoma attempted to detect human DNA from three bone fragments recovered last year by a group of aviation enthusiasts on an expedition to Nikumaroro Island, 2,900km south of Hawaii.
A doctor in Fiji determined the bones were of a human male, but the remains disappeared.
“There is simply no way that the Earhart aircraft could be anywhere near Papua New Guinea,” he said.
Mr Gillespie says radio transmissions and other evidence indicate Earhart landed on an atoll in the central Pacific and perished from a lack of food and water.

A Guatemala City sinkhole in 2007 swallowed at least three people (hat tip to Jeremy Zilar).
This astonishingly unnerving photograph was posted today on the Flickr.com feed of the Guatemalan goverment and shows a seemingly bottomless sinkhole that opened up on Sunday in Guatemala City as a swath of Central America was drenched by tropical storm Agatha. The storm only briefly hit tropical storm strength on Saturday as it came ashore from the Pacific Ocean over the weekend, but the death toll had risen to 115 at last count. President Álvaro Colom’s government has declared a state of public calamity in the Escuintla, Sacatepéquez and Guatemala departments, according to news agencies, in part because the Pacaya volcano near the capital erupted Friday, injuring many people and killing a television reporter.

Is Korean Oh Eun-sun first woman to climb 14 top peaks? There is no one “official” record of who has, or has not, climbed the 14 peaks over 8,000m high.
The nearest thing, for the nine mountains in the Nepali Himalayas, is the record kept by Elizabeth Hawley, an 86-year-old American based in Kathmandu.
Records kept by governments are not regarded as authoritative.
Last week Ms Hawley amended her Himalayan Database to mark Oh Eun-sun’s 2009 ascent of Kangchenjunga as “disputed”, after listening to arguments from Ms Oh’s Spanish rival, Edurne Pasaban.
Ms Hawley will interview Ms Oh and her Sherpas on their return from Annapurna.
If she decides to classify Ms Oh’s ascent of Kangchenjunga as “unrecognised”, her competitors – Edurne Pasaban, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner of Austria, and Nives Meroi of Italy – will be back in contention.
These are some of the issues at the heart of the dispute over Kangchenjunga:
The summit photographs – Ms Oh ascended Kangchenjunga with at least three Sherpas, in very bad weather. A video shot at the summit in driving snow is said to be so blurry that it could have been taken anywhere. A still photograph (above) was taken at the summit, Ms Oh’s sponsors say, but not on the “three or four square feet” right at the top. Ms Hawley says the photograph is “clearly” not taken at the summit, because “summit pictures of other people on the same mountain in the same season show them standing in the snow”. However, pictures taken by climbers in previous years have shown rocks close to the summit. Another Korean climber who is on Kangchenjunga this year is hoping to identify the spot where the photograph was taken.
The Sherpas – One of the Sherpas who accompanied Ms Oh on the ascent of Kangchenjunga assured journalists at a press conference in Korea in 2009 that Ms Oh had reached the top. He told Ms Hawley’s assistant the same thing. However, Edurne Pasaban says Ms Oh’s other Sherpas have told her this is not correct. Ms Hawley would like to talk to them to determine the truth.
The rope – The summit photograph shows a green rope stretching over Ms Oh’s left boot. Spanish climber Ferran Latorre, who climbed to the summit of Kangchenjunga with Ms Pasaban 12 days after Ms Oh, has suggested that this is a rope fixed to the mountain by her Sherpas. He says this fixed rope went no higher than 8,350m, and concludes that the photograph was taken some 200m or so below the 8,586m summit. Jin Park of Blackyak, the Korean company that sponsors Ms Oh, says the rope in the picture is a 5mm rope used for attaching accessories – in this case, probably, an ice axe – rather than climbing.

M.I.A. drums up controversy with violent ‘Born Free’ video M.I.A. is the latest artist to drum up controversy with a provocative new music video. The violent clip for “Born Free,” a track off her next album, debuted Monday. The rapper tweeted a YouTube link to the Romain Gavras-directed video yesterday morning, but the graphic video was yanked from the site almost immediately.
“F**k UMG who won’t show it on YouTube! for the U.S.,” M.I.A. tweeted, implying her record company was behind the decision to pull the video. The “Paper Planes” singer later clarified that it wasn’t Universal Music Group’s fault.
The video is still available on the rapper’s Web site at miauk.com. The nine-minute-plus clip shows soldiers rounding up red-haired boys, dropping them off in a remote area and then turning guns and other weapons on them.
M.I.A. is just the latest musician to cause a stir with an online video. Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat,” in which she performs a walking striptease in downtown Dallas before acting out receiving a fatal gunshot to the head at the spot where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, drew buzz online for weeks and landed the singer with a disorderly conduct

Eureka Earthquake, A strong earthquake, estimated magnitude 6.5, rocked the Eureka, Calif., area this afternoon, snapping power lines, toppling televisions, disrupting power throughout the region and forcing the evacuation of at least one mall.
The earthquake was centered under the Pacific Ocean, about 25 miles southwest of Eureka, at 4:27 p.m. A tsunami was not expected, according to the National Weather Service.
[Updated 5:57 p.m.: The California Highway Patrol in Eureka reported no major damage to roads and bridges and highways and said roads are open.
"Right now it's very preliminary but there does not seem to be any damage that is overly significant." said Capt. Dale Cannon. "We've got some minor glass breakage, some gas mains affected and some power lines down."
He said he has not heard of reports of any injuries.]
[Updated: 6:27 p.m.: The California Emergency Management Agency said there has been no call from the Eureka area for emergency assistance because only minimal damage has been reported.
“We’ve had some reports of minor damage, cosmetic damage, windows broken,” said Kelly Huston, assistant secretary of the agency. “But so far, it’s all very minor, and no damage as far as we can tell to roadways and thoroughfares.”

Coast Guard Plane Crash
Breaking news about Coast Guard Plane Crash, US coastguard Hercules plane and a Marine Corps helicopter collided each other off the coast of southern California.
A crew of seven was aboard the airplane and two were aboard the helicopter when the aircraft collided Thursday night 50 miles west of the San Diego County coast and 15 miles east of San Clemente Island, a Navy training site.
Aircraft and ships are scouring the ocean off San Diego for any signs of survivors of a nighttime collision of a Coast Guard C-130 airplane and a Marine Corps attack helicopter.
The officials said,
“A search was on Thursday night for nine people left missing after a Coast Guard plane collided with a Marine helicopter over the Pacific Ocean near Southern California,”
According to reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), at the time of the collision, a nearby pilot had reported seeing a fireball.
