ISLAMABAD: A three-member Supreme Court (SC) bench has ordered demolition of illegal construction of commercial buildings in F-9 Park, also known as Fatima Jinnah Park.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justices Ghulam Rabbani and Khalilur Rehman Ramday gave its ruling in a case filed against constructions built inside the Fatima Jinnah Park in violation of the court’s 2006 verdict banning all commercial ventures in public parks.

The apex court had reserved the decision last month at the completion of the hearing. In its verdict on Friday, court has ordered demolition of multinational fast food chain outlet and leisure club built within the premises of the park.

The court has also accepted the apology of restaurant’s owner Ameen Lakhani for his remarks about Supreme Court and ordered that owners of these buildings will demolish the structures within three months on their own expenses.

The apex court also directed legal action against former chairman CDA and present secretary petroleum Kamrab Lashari for giving permission for construction.

cc18e7ba82539w bud seligWhile he may not get his name etched in the record books for a perfect game, Armando Galarraga has been given a consolation prize. The Detroit Tigers organization along with Chevrolet have given the pitcher a consolation prize – a brand new corvette convertible for his recent efforts. The pitcher accepted the car at Thursday’s latest game, and even brought the official lineup to umpire Jim Joyce who will be working the game. Galarraga has received an outpouring of support in the wake of the Detroit Tigers perfect game which was blown by one umpire’s mistake. Fans have been mixed about the bad call, with some lobbying for the call to be overturned, making for true baseball history, while others say it should be left how it is, for purity.

According to ESPN.com, it appears there will be no new precedent set. A baseball official reportedly has confirmed the call will not be reversed. On Thursday, commissioner Bud Selig spoke about the potential for expanded replay and umpiring. However, Selig did not address the bad call from Wednesday night’s game. See full story at ESPN.com.

The call in question came at the end of the Tigers-Indians game. Galarraga had the perfect game seemingly won. With two outs to go, he covered first base as first baseman Cabrera threw him the ball. Galarraga’s foot was on the bag before the Indians’ Donald touched. However, umpire Jim Joyce called him “safe”. Upon further review by the fans, the TV analysts, reporters, and Joyce himself, he had clearly made a mistake.
It wouldn’t be the first reversal in baseball history. On July, 24, 1983, George Brett came to the plate with his Kansas City Royals trailing the New York Yankees 4-3 in the top of the ninth. Brett knocked a two-run home run out of the park to give the Royals the 5-4 lead. But Yankees manager Billy Martin requested that Brett’s bat be examined. Rookie umpire Tim McClelland ruled that Brett’s bat, slathered with pine tar, exceeded the rule that “a bat may not be covered by such a substance more than 18 inches from the tip of the handle.” Brett was ruled out, the home run nullified, and the Yankees notched another W.

The Yankee outfielder blasted a two-run home run in the second inning to kick off the Bombers 8-2 victory Friday night. Just before the game the outfielder confirmed that he’s engaged to actress Joanna Garcia.

The wasn’t the only news before the game. Joe Girardi made some subtle personnel shifts that propelled the Yankees to their best offensive output in a week.

Robinson Cano, batting cleanup for the first time in his career with Alex Rodriguez granted a night off, continued his ascent into superstardom with three hits, including a seventh-inning grand slam, to highlight the shelling of Cleveland at the Stadium.b6ce9effc4wisher nick swisher

Phil Hughes struck out the first five batters he faced en route to seven innings of two-run ball for his sixth win in seven decisions, as the Yanks kicked off a 16-game stretch predominantly against subpar teams with their third win in four games.

Curtis Granderson, who returned to the lineup Friday night, affected the outcome only slightly – going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored – but the Yanks gladly welcomed back their starting centerfielder for his first appearance since suffering a Grade 2 groin strain May 1.

With Brett Gardner slumping, Nick Johnson out indefinitely following wrist surgery and Jorge Posada also on the disabled list, Girardi said before the game that Granderson will get a look in the prime lineup spot between Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira – at least against right-handed pitching.89dbd2e825eykobe nick swisher

“The main thing is just going to be whatever the situation dictates,” said Granderson, who was batting just .225 before he got injured. “I know Jeter likes to put the ball in play early, so I’ll be ready to hit.”

The Yanks, who rested both A-Rod and Francisco Cervelli, hadn’t done much hitting in the past week, scoring more than three runs in just one of their previous six games.

Swisher shot: Like many who have passed through Target Field, Swisher surveyed the dimensions, then watched fly balls die, before realizing that the place wouldn’t give up very many cheap ones: “403 with 30-foot wall? I’m not going deep over there,” Swisher said of the park’s center field configuration.

So Swisher made sure it wouldn’t be a problem, pulling his homer off Twins reliever Jon Rauch closer down the right field line, over a section of seats that overhangs the wall.

96af0ec345gj025 okinawa Tens of thousands of people have attended a rally in Japan’s southern island of Okinawa demanding that a US military base be moved off the island.
Under a 2006 agreement with the US, the US Marines’ Futenma base was to be moved from the centre to the coast.
But demonstrators want Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama to stick to an election pledge to remove it completely.77550a6371712332 okinawa
The row over the base has undermined relations between his centre-left Government and the US.
The BBC’s Roland Buerk in Tokyo says Mr Hatoyama staked his job on resolving the issue by the end of May.
He is now under pressure because of his apparent dithering over the base, our correspondent adds.
His handling of the issue could be critical ahead of upper house polls in July.
Japanese have long been resentful of the massive US base on the island, which is home to most of the 47,000 American troops based in Japan.

id 398760 mississippi A tornado almost a mile wide tore through Mississippi Saturday, killing at least 10 people and causing significant injuries and damage as it raked cities from the central western border with Louisiana northeastward to Alabama.

Two of the dead were children, according to Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue crews reach hard-hit areas where structures have been badly damaged, Flynn said.

Five of the dead were from Choctaw County, in the north central part of of the state, three were from Yazoo County, north of Jackson, and one was from Holmes County, also in the north central Mississippi, he said.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who was in Yazoo City where his home is located, called the twister “gigantic” and said that “in places (it) seemed to be to be several miles wide.”

Some residents were trapped in badly damaged homes, he said.

“They’re working to get to the people and rescue as many as they can,” said Dan Turner, a spokesman for the governor, reporting “significant injuries” in at least three counties.

In all, 12 counties were reporting injuries, with some of the injured airlifted to a level one trauma center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, said Jeff Rent, a MEMA spokesman.

The hospital has 10 people injured in the tornado, with four in critical condition, according to spokesman Tom Fortner.

The hospital is expecting “another one or two waves of victims” as crews are able to fully access the tornado’s path, said Richard Summers, chairman of emergency medicine at the medical center.

The hospital has crews in Yazoo City and Lexington that have been “amazed and astounded” by the amount of damage they’re seeing, Summers said.

The state’s emergency management officials have set up a command post near Highway 49 in Yazoo City and the state has activated a 25-person rapid response team from Hattiesburg that is capable of search and rescue operations.

The governor said he is activating local members of the National Guard in Yazoo City to maintain order.

President Barack Obama has “been briefed on the tragedy in Mississippi and the situation is being followed by the White House,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said.

Barbour said that he has not yet requested emergency federal aid but that he plans to do so on Monday.

“FEMA is in contact and coordination with our state and local partners and stand ready to help if a request is made,” said Brad Carroll, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Mississippi residents reported that the path of the twister was a half-mile to a mile wide, said Mark McAllister, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Jackson.

CNN meteorologist Jacqui Jeras said the tornado had traveled 150 miles across Mississippi, starting in the western part of the state and moving northeast before weakening as it moved into Alabama.

In Yazoo City, Fire Chief Roy Wilson said between 20 and 30 houses were destroyed, and said some people were trapped inside structures. Wilson said he didn’t yet have confirmed numbers on injuries.

“It’s in pretty bad shape so far,” he said of the city.

Speaking to reporters in Yazoo City, Barbour said 17 injured have been taken to a hospital via ambulance and that two others were airlifted to Jackson.

“By God’s grace (the tornado) did not go into the most central part of the city, the most populous, however it went through the southern edge and eastern edge of town in a number of large neighborhoods,” he said. “A number of businesses have been destroyed and others severely damaged — there are churches that have been obliterated.”

The sheriff’s department in nearby Hinds County is sending two dozen deputies and 100 inmates to assist with the response in Yazoo County and to clear debris.

In Eagle Lake, near the Louisiana border, about 30 homes were destroyed, Turner said. In Holmes County, 50 homes sustained structural damage, the National Weather Service reported.

Saturday’s tornado was part of a broad band of storms that stretched from Missouri to the panhandle of Florida, Jeras said.

The storm system struck Louisiana before it moved into Mississippi. A Tallulah, Louisiana, police dispatcher said a chemical plant in the city had been damaged, but could not give further details.

Turner said that emergency response teams had been slowed by people out surveying the effects of the storm.

“One of the biggest obstacles is, of course, people are curious and want to get out and see the damage,” he said. “We’ve urged people to stay away from those areas, not only because it slows down the emergency response, but there are also still live electrical wires, there are open gas lines that will have to be shut down.”

Kebede had untroubled victory, the Kenyans today didnt turn up! Samwel Wanjiru was left behind at mile 18, followed by Kibet at mile 20. Kirui tried to Keep up with Kebede and I could see he was giving it 110% while Kebede looked like he could notch a gear anytime. At mile 22 Kebede just went for it, he crossed the finish line in 2:05:12! Missing the course record by 2 seconds.

As for the Ladies, my athlete for the race has to be the second place finisher, another Russian (sorry, cant remember her name) At certain point she seemed to be far behind, but she just kept going and going! She was also thrilled with her performance because she was all smiles at the finish.

I watched the race Live via Satellite TV and I have to say It was another beautiful London Marathon! Loved it!

march of dimes walk

5a7c891298dimes2 march of dimes walk About $40,000 was raised through Saturday’s “March for Babies” in Mount Airy, but just as important, the event provided a reminder of the constant need to combat problems that can impact their lives before birth.

An estimated 350 walkers gathered at Veterans Memorial Park, and shortly after 10 p.m. began a 3.5-mile trek along West Lebanon Street which wound its way along several other city streets and the Emily B. Taylor Greenway.

The gathering sponsored by the March of Dimes included mothers pushing baby carriages and victims of birth defects who were there in wheelchairs.

“The walk is a celebration,” explained Debbi Patterson, March of Dimes coordinator for this area, who said she was pleased with the turnout for Saturday’s march that was part of a nationwide campaign.

Money was raised through the efforts of 50 to 60 teams made up of local families, companies, medical offices and other agencies, many wearing distinctive T-shirts to highlight their groups.

The funds were raised through individual team activities such as bake sales and car washes, Patterson explained. “Some of the companies matched,” she added of cases in which they made extra donations based on what their employees generated.

While Saturday represented a time of celebration, it also focused on the tragedies that accompany birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. This weighed heavily on the mind of one walker in particular, Misty Quesinberry of Mount Airy.

“I just found out I was pregnant,” Quesinberry said as she trudged through a city neighborhood during the walk.

“And I’m going to be the grandpa,” said Benny Bowman, who was accompanying Quesinberry. She explained that expecting her own child has broadened her perspective about the need to give children a good start in life, as well as concern for couples who have experienced problems.

That includes Kevin and Jodi Tarkovich of Cornelius and their relatives, who formed the “ambassador family” that led Saturday’s march. The couple’s son Drew was born 15 weeks’ premature on March 29, 2008, but lived for only 12 minutes, the couple told the crowd before Saturday’s march.

While a few participants jogged during the event, most formed a tightly knit group that meandered its way along streets near the park with the help of city police and firemen and the Mount Airy Rescue Squad.

At the tail end of the marchers were Sarah Hawks and Katie Riggs, members of the Mount Airy Junior Woman’s Club. But the pair had a good reason for being a little slower that the rest, since they were pushing wheelchairs containing two girls.
