Indonesian Train Crash kills at Least 43

A train crash in central Indonesia killed at least 43 people and injured dozens on Saturday, many of them critically, officials and witnesses said.

The toll was expected to rise with some bodies still trapped in the mangled wreckage.

The accident occurred at a station in Petarukan, a city on the northern coast of Central Java province, at around 3 a.m. (0800 GMT; 9 p.m. EDT Friday) as many passengers were sleeping, witnesses told TVOne.

A train from the capital, Jakarta, slammed into a train sitting idle near the platform, causing severe damage to both.

Cendana Banandi, a government life insurance official, told The Associated Press that by midmorning the total number of dead from three separate hospitals stood at 43.

He says another 50 were injured, many of them seriously.

Meanwhile, another passenger train crashed in the town of Solo at around 4 a.m., said Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan, adding data was still being collected about casualties.

An official at a public hospital who identified himself only as Peter told Metro TV and El Shinta that one person had died in that crash.

Ervan said it was not yet clear what caused the first, more deadly crash.

“We’re still investigating to see if it was due to negligence of the driver or because signaling equipment on one of the trains was faulty,” he said.

Coaster meets accident in AK; 14 dead

MUZAFFARABAD: A total of 14 passengers lost their lives and six others sustained critical wounds when their passenger coaster skidded off the track, slipping into a ravine near Davelian in Muzaffarabad on early Saturday, Geo news quoted police sources as saying Saturday.

According to police source, the tourists’ van going from Rawalpindi to Neelam Valley slid off into a gorge while moving over a road turn near Davelian, killing 14 and injuring scores others.

A total of 22 passengers were onboard coaster. The injured have been shifted to hospital in Muzzafarabad located some 3 hours away from accident site, police officials confirmed to media.

At least three deceased have been identified.

Injured persons are being shifted to hospital in Muzzafarabad located some 3 hours away from accident site, police officials confirmed to media.

The reason of the accident could not be ascertained immediately, however, some reports confirmed for the mishap to have occurred due to over-speeding.

Al-Qaida Link in Failed Plane Attack Found

DETROIT: A Nigerian man who said he was an agent for al-Qaida tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane as it was preparing to land in Detroit, but travelers who smelled smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers rushed to subdue him, the passengers and federal officials said.

Flight 253 with 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard was about 20 minutes from the airport when passengers heard popping noises, witnesses said. At least one person climbed over others and jumped on the man. Shortly afterward, the suspect was taken to the front of the plane with his pants cut off and his legs burned, a passenger said.

One U.S. intelligence official said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

“It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase,” said Peter Smith, a traveler from the Netherlands. “First there was a pop, and then (there) was smoke.”

Smith said a passenger sitting opposite the man climbed over people, went across the aisle and tried to restrain the man. Syed Jafri, another passenger, said he saw a glow and smelled smoke. Then, he said, “a young man behind me jumped on him.”

“Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic,” said Jafri. Smith said the heroic passenger appeared to have been burned.

The White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel. It did not specify what those were.

The incident was reminiscent of Richard Reid, who tried to destroy a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes, but was subdued by other passengers. Reid is serving a life sentence.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect in  attempted attack as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab. One law enforcement official said the man claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

The man was being questioned Friday evening. An intelligence official said the Nigerian passenger was being held and treated in an Ann Arbor, Michigan, hospital. One passenger was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman said.

Flight 253 began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit, said Rep. Peter King, the ranking Republican member of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee.

There was nothing out of the ordinary about the flight until it was on final approach to Detroit, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory. That is when the pilot declared an emergency, she said.

He was being followed by at least one paparazzi who was taking photographs of him. A scuffle ensued during which time it’s alleged that Mr Tyson struck him one time on the forehead. The other individual did suffer a laceration to his forehead and did fall to the ground. LA City Fire Department transported him to a local area hospital where he was in satisfactory condition with minor injuries,” Los Angeles Airport Police Sergeant Jim Holcomb said. The Los Angeles Times, citing an unnamed source, said Tyson told police the photographer struck him in an attempt to provoke him, and the photographer claimed Tyson punched him in the face and tried to take film from his camera.

Tyson, 43, won his first championship title at age 20, and his reputation as a ferocious boxer in the ring earned him the nickname “Iron Mike” during his heyday in the 1980s. But he also has had a troubled history. As a boy, he was involved in criminal gang activity in Brooklyn, New York, and he eventually went to a school for troubled youth in upstate New York where he began boxing. In 1988, as his career soared, he married actress Robin Givens. The pair fought publicly, Givens claimed he physically hurt her, and eventually they divorced. In 1991, Tyson was accused of raping Desiree Washington, a Miss Black America contestant. He was convicted of sexual assault in 1992 and spent three years in prison. Tennessee Football Players Arrested

Tennessee Football Players Arrested, Three University of Tennessee football players are in custody and charged with attempted armed robbery after an incident that occurred this morning in a pilot store located on Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville, near the campus of the University of Tennessee.

According to Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk Knoxville, Nu’Keese Richardson, Mike Janzen Jackson and Edwards were arrested at the Detention Center of Knox County.

Officers responded to the convenience store located at 2218 Pilot Cumberland Avenue at about 1:43 this morning on an armed robbery in progress call. According to police reports three men were sitting in the car waiting for a friend who was inside the store.

The three men said they had parked next to a light blue Toyota Prius. He went on to say a black man then approached with a black sweatshirt and brandishing a black semi-automatic pistol. He opened the driver’s door and said, “Give me everything you have.”

The men said a black man, then exited from the passenger side of the Prius, wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt. He walked to the passenger door of his car, opened it and said, “Give us everything you have.”

According to statements made by men to the police, all presenting their portfolios to suspects and showed them that he had no money. A black man, third, then went and told the other two black males, “We have to go.” The three got into the Prius and left, according to reports.

The Prius has been observed near Gibbs Hall on Lake Loudoun Blvd. on the campus of the University of Tennessee. There is a stop crime took place on the vehicle, and four men were detained in the vehicle.

He saw two hooded black officers in sight in the backseat. Under the seat back towards the center, officers found a black air pistol CO2 powered. Inside the glove box, officers found a marijuana grinder. A search of the suspects revealed a clear plastic bag containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the vehicle’s driver, his jacket pocket Marie Montmarquet’s. Montmarquet later stated that the mill marijuana belonged to her. She was charged with possession, in addition to attempted armed robbery.

Crime Lab responded to the scene and confiscated the hoodies, the air gun and marijuana mill. The vehicle was towed to the city impound lot. The marijuana was confiscated by the officers.

The four suspects were taken back to pilot a program to identification. The victims positively identified Edwards and Richardson as the two approached their vehicle and demanded everything. Source thedailytimes

Traffic Crash Near Margalla, Seven killed

ISLAMABAD: At least seven persons were killed and more than 15 were injured Tuesday morning when a coach collided with an oil tanker at Margalla checkpost near Rawalpindi.

In traffic crash 15 persons were wounded. Dead bodies and injured were transferred to Taxila and Wah Cantt hospitals by the local volunteers as the relief and rescue teams could not reach to the place of the accident timely.

Eight injured said to be in a critical condition.

A tyre of the passenger coach busted and the coach went out of the control of the driver and collided with the oil tanker coming from the opposite direction.
