HARYANA: US cult motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson will open an assembly plant in India next year to meet demand for its luxury two-wheelers in the country’s booming economy, the company said Tuesday.
The Indian plant will be the company’s second facility outside its US homebase after Brazil, said Harley-Davidson Motor, which began selling its bikes in India earlier this year.
“Given the strong response we have received in the initial months of retail operations, we believe this is the right investment for this important market,” company president Matthew Levatich said in a statement.
“India’s rapidly growing economy, rising middle class and significant investment in construction of new roads and highways are paving the way for leisure motorcycle riding,” Levatich said.

Halley’s Comet or Comet Halley (officially designated 1P/Halley) is the best-known of the short-period comets, and is visible from Earth every 75 to 76 years. Halley is the only short-period comet that is clearly visible to the naked eye from Earth, and thus the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime. Other naked-eye comets may be brighter and more spectacular, but will appear only once in thousands of years. Halley’s returns to the inner Solar System have been observed by astronomers since at least 240 BC, and recorded by Chinese, Babylonian, and medieval European chroniclers, but were not recognized as reappearances of the same object. The comet’s periodicity was first determined in 1705 by English astronomer Edmond Halley, after whom it is now named. Halley’s Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061.
During its 1986 apparition, Halley’s Comet became the first to be observed in detail by spacecraft, providing the first observational data on the structure of a comet nucleus and the mechanism of coma and tail formation. These observations supported a number of longstanding hypotheses about comet construction, particularly Fred Whipple’s “dirty 
snowball” model, which correctly surmised that Halley would be composed of a mixture of volatile ices—such as water, carbon dioxide and ammonia—and dust. However, the missions also provided data which substantially reformed and reconfigured these ideas; for instance it is now understood that Halley’s surface is largely composed of dusty, non-volatile materials, and that only a small portion of it is icy.
The meteor shower is predicted to peak early Thursday morning. Under ideal conditions (a dark, moonless sky) about 40 of these very swift meteors can be seen per hour.

Thailand’s prime minister has said he is ready to dissolve parliament in September, paving the way for elections, in a bid to end a crippling political crisis.
Abhisit Vejjajiva announced the time-frame on Thursday after anti-government protesters, or the so-called red shirts, accepted his reconciliation plan which includes holding early elections on November 14.
Earlier, legislators from his ruling Democrat Party held talks in parliament to refine the reconciliation process and discuss the dissolution date.
Abhisit floated his five-point roadmap on Monday, including the offer for fresh elections in November – about a year before his term expires – on condition that all parties accepted it and dropped their demand for immediate polls.
He said the red shirts must also abandon their protests that have brought weeks of chaos and occasional deadly clashes to the Thai capital, Bangkok.
“Everybody can calculate the date,” Abhisit said, indicating that parliament will be dissolved between September 15-30.
“If they don’t go home, I’m not going to dissolve parliament,” added Abhisit in a live interview on ASTV.
“I repeat, I am not negotiating with anybody.”
TimingUnder the Thai constitution, parliament must be dissolved 45 to 60 days before an election.
The timing of the dissolution has been a crucial issue, and the red shirts rejected Abhisit’s earlier offer to dissolve parliament by the end of the year.
Abhisit has said he wants enough time in office to pass a national budget for next year.
But both sides want to be in control when a key reshuffle of top military posts occurs in September.
The red shirts however remain suspicious, and are demanding a specific date before they end the rallies that have paralysed the commercial heart of Bangkok.

Dum Maro Dum to again crack into non-diaspora global market
After Shah Rukh Khan in My Name Is Khan, it is Abhishek Bachchan’s turn to be marketed on a global platform by Fox Star.
The company plans to unleash the Abhishek starrer Dum Maro Dum on the same level globally as Khan. Goa, Bachchan and Bipasha Basu are the heady mix that Fox are counting on to entice an international audience.
In the meanwhile, Fox Star and their global equivalent Fox Searchlight are hoping to see My Name Is Khan (MNIK) do a Slumdog Millionaire in the US, thereby paving the way for the second Bollywood release Dum Maro Dum from Fox.
Fox’s CEO Vijay Singh is super-optimistic. “We’re only releasing MNIK in 2 New York theatres on May 5, But please remember, Slumdog Millionaire was initially released in only 5 theatres in New York. We hope to add more theatres to Khan after the first week.”
The film then goes to France in May, Germany in June, Spain in July, Russia in August and Italy in September.
All the centres barring Germany would screen the original film in its shortened version with English subtitles.
Informs Vijay Singh, “Germany is traditionally a country that accepts dubbed versions of films from all over the world. In other countries the subtitled versions work better.”
Having tested the water Fox Star, is now ready to market Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maro Dum on the same global pattern as MNIK.
Says Singh, “We feel Dum Maro Dum has the same potential to appeal to a global market as Khan. Goa where the film is set being the focus of interest. Also the young trendy cast should appeal globally.”
