Third ODI: South Africa beat Pakistan by two runs
South Africa 228-9 beat Pakistan 226-9 by two runs. South Africa narrowly avoided a second successive last-over defeat by Pakistan as they won a thrilling third one-day international in Dubai. Chasing a South African total of 228, built largely around Hashim Amla’s unbeaten 119, Pakistan were initially stifled but fought back superbly.
Fawad Alam’s 59 looked to have swung the game in their favour late on. But Saeed Ajmal was bowled by the penultimate ball and Shoaib Akhtar could not hit the four needed to win. It appeared as though the less likely source of Alam was about to do the same for his side at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The 25-year-old may have started slowly, but he accelerated in the third and final power play to put his side on the brink of a victory that would put them 2-1 ahead in the five-game series. However, needing 12 runs from the final over, Alam was prevented from hitting boundaries. When he lost partner Ajmal it left last man Akhtar with the difficult task of hitting a boundary off the bowling of Rusty Theron, and it was a feat that proved beyond him. JP Duminy (26), AB De Villiers (19), Albie Morkel (19) and Johan Botha (15) were the only other South African batsmen to make double figures, while Akhtar, with 3-39, was the pick of a strong Pakistan bowling display, which also saw Afridi and Hafeez collect two wickets apiece. South Africa take their 2-1 series lead into Friday’s fourth one-day international, also to be played in Dubai.

Cincinnati Masters:Federer, Roddick and Murray cruise into quarterfinal
World number one Rafa Nadal was knocked out of the Cincinnati Masters by Marcos Baghdatis on Friday, the Cypriot winning the quarter-final 6-4 4-6 6-4.
Baghdatis goes through to meet Switzerland’s Roger Federer in Saturday’s semi-final while the other match-up is an All-American affair with Andy Roddick facing Mardy Fish. Nadal double-faulted at break point with the game at 4-4 in the third allowing the 20th ranked Baghdatis to serve out for the win.
The prospect of the US’s top two men battling for a spot in the final is a timely boost for the American game which is without a top ten male player going into the US Open at the end of the month. After struggling with illness recently Roddick looks in good shape after defeating fifth ranked Robin Soderling on Thursday and his 6-4 7-5 win over world number two Djokovic. Fish took advantage of an exhausted world number four Andy Murray, who struggled in 100-degree heat (38 Celsius) and lost 6-7 6-1 7-6 to the unseeded American. Fish, ranked 36th in the world, has now beaten the Briton in three successive meetings following victories in Miami and at Queen’s Club, London. Fourth seed Murray won the opening set tiebreak despite producing his first double-fault at 5-5 but the tired Scot then struggled in a one-sided second set. Both players held serve throughout the decider and Fish emerged victorious against a frustrated Murray who, after losing a rally on the penultimate point, thrashed the ball out of the stadium.
Pakistan beaten by India, out of Asia Cup
DAMBULLA: Harbhajan Singh smashed the penultimate ball from Mohammad Aamer for a six as India knocked Pakistan out of the Asia Cup with a three-wicket win on Saturday.
Harbhajan”s last-gasp shot over the midwicket fence helped India past Pakistan”s 267 with one ball to spare in a heart-stopping finish at the Rangiri stadium in Dambulla.
India scored 52 runs in the last five overs after the sixth wicket had fallen at 219, with Suresh Raina making 34 off 27 balls and Harbhajan an unbeaten 15 off 11.
The exciting victory lifted both India and hosts Sri Lanka into the June 24 final with two wins each and rendered the last two league matches inconsequential.
Pakistan and Bangladesh, who have yet to win a game, play each other on Monday, while India and Sri Lanka clash on Tuesday in a dress rehearsal for the final.
Barely 2,000 Sri Lankan fans were on hand to watch a rare clash between the arch-rivals, only their second one-day encounter in the past two years.
Opener Gautam Gambhir hit 83 off 97 balls and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni chipped in with 57 during a third-wicket stand of 97 which lifted India to 180-2 in the 36th over.
But Gambhir”s dismissal at that stage, bowled by Saeed Ajmal, triggered a middle-order collapse which saw four wickets fall for the addition of 39 runs.
Dhoni was bowled by Shoaib Malik and Rohit Sharma was trapped leg-before by Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, before Ajmal removed Ravindra Jadeja to make it 219-6 in the 46th over.
Raina and Harbhajan then stepped in to lead a brilliant recovery and crush a valiant Pakistan side”s hopes of staying alive in the tournament.
For Pakistan, opener Salman Butt top-scored with 74 and Kamran Akmal hit 51 off 41 balls after Afridi won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night international.

He explained that he wants flexibility in his players, adding that his style with England has always been a 4-4-2, or a 4-3-1-2 formation with Steven Gerrard as a midfielder free behind the two forwards. CHITTAGONG : England bagged three wickets in six overs to close in on a big victory in the opening Test against Bangladesh on Monday.
Paceman Tim Bresnan struck twice in the afternoon session and off-spinner Graeme Swann once as Bangladesh struggled to reach 125-5 in their second innings, chasing an unlikely 513-run target at tea on the penultimate day.
Bangladesh’s highest fourth-innings total is 413, against Sri Lanka in Dhaka in 2008.
Junaid Siddique (38 not out) and Aftab Ahmed (26) steadied the Bangladeshi innings with a 54-run stand for the third wicket before Bresnan grabbed two wickets in his three overs.
The England paceman had Ahmed caught behind then bowled Mohammad Mahmudullah for five runs to reduce the hosts to 105-4.
Swann, who bowled Tamim Iqbal in the morning session, got his second wicket when he removed skipper Shakib Al Hasan, judged leg-before while attempting to sweep. TV replays, however, suggested the ball came off the gloves.
The England spinner has so far captured seven wickets, including five in the first innings.
Tamim, top-scorer in the first innings with 86, contributed only 14 this time before being bowled in Swann’s second over.
Kayes fell in the last over of the morning session, caught by wicket-keeper Matt Prior off paceman Steven Finn after making 23 with four boundaries.
England batted for 50 minutes in the morning, adding 78 runs to their overnight total of 131-5 before declaring their second innings closed at 209-7.
Left-arm spinner Shakib bagged both the wickets, removing Prior (seven) and Swann (32) to finish with 4-62.
Swann hit three fours in his brisk 25-ball knock, while middle-order batsman Ian Bell cracked one six and four boundaries in a 55-ball 39 not out. They put on 65 for the eighth wicket.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 296 in their first innings in reply to England’s mammoth 599-6 declared.

India Beat South Africa Retain Number-One Spot
India has retained the number-one place in the ICC Test Championship after winning the Kolkata Test by an innings and 58 runs that has helped it to draw its two-Test series with South Africa.
India was in serious danger of losing its top spot after South Africa won the Nagpur Test last week and then bad weather yesterday[Wednesday] allowed only 31 overs of play on the penultimate day of the second Test. However, Harbhajan Singh took 5-59 and Amit Mishra bagged 3-78 as South Africa was bowled out for 289 despite a fighting 127 not out by Hashim Amla, his second century of the Test.
The series result means that the pre-series status-quo in terms of positions on the table is maintained though India has slipped to 124 ratings points after conceding one ratings point while South Africa has stayed second on 120 ratings points.
This also means that Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side will not only retain the mace, which it received after defeating Sri Lanka last year in December, but will also pocket a cheque for US$175,000 which is presented to the side that reaches the 1 April cut-off date in top spot.
