Last year 51 charities hosted viewing parties for the 83rd Academy Awards with 17,332 guests in attendance nationwide. More than $3.5 million was raised, all of it remaining in local communities. Since its inception in 1994, the program has generated nearly $33.5 million in funding for a wide spectrum of charitable organizations – every cent staying within the community where it was raised.

For the 19th consecutive year, Concept Marketing Development of Santa Barbara, California, will assist the Academy in coordinating the program.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

A Minute With Bette Midler on New Year TV special

December 31, 2010 by

NEW YORK: She has received four Grammys, four Golden Globes, three Emmys, and a Tony Award, and even after selling more than 30 million records, singer Bette Midler is still going strong.

72d2062d010 76608 l A Minute With Bette Midler on New Year TV specialFor over 40 years, Midler has delighted audiences with her bawdy live performances, and on Dec. 31, Midler will be ringing in the New Year on cable TV channel HBO with her special, “The Showgirl Must Go On,” which is the live stage show she has been performing in recent years at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

The special was taped in front of a packed house at Caesars. Midler, known as “The Divine Miss M,” dons elaborate costumes and sings some of her best-known hits including “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” with her back-up singers, The Harlettes, and a 13-piece band.

Midler asked about the TV special, why being environmentally green is common sense and her love of books.

Q: How did you get in such great shape for the show?
A: “A year before we even started rehearsals, I started doing my warm-ups, getting on the treadmill again and lifting weights. It”s fascinating to get on stage and run for an hour and a half, wringing wet at the end. And I loved every minute of it.”

Q: You”ve had such a long and successful career. What do you think is the key to your success?
A: “I don”t do everything that comes my way and I tend to do things in spurts. I”ll be really busy and then just collapse, take a break for a year or two and then come roaring back. I”m not sure if that”s how you achieve longevity, but I tend to sift through things and make sure they are things I really want to do.”

Q: You did over 200 performances of your Las Vegas show. How do you keep a song fresh that”s done night after night?
A: It”s not so easy, but the crowds are different every night and every crowd becomes a beast of its own — this huge monster that has to be wrangled and corralled. And you have to stay in tune with them. There”s an ebb and flow between the crowd and the entertainer that really keeps you on your toes, and this changes with every performance. I think that”s what keeps a song fresh.

Q: Are you working on any new projects?
A: No, this is one of the down times. Just looking around to see what”s out there. It”s a different world now, with the Internet, iTunes, YouTube, Twitter — all this stuff which is so different from what I do and I really don”t know where I fit in it. I feel if you can entertain a group of people live, you”re really going to be okay, and I”ve always been able to do that.

But I”m curious to see where I fit in in this new world, so I”m exploring my options.

Q: What”s on your iPod?
A: I just love Teddy Pendergrass. I”ve always been a big fan. Also, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, “The Sound of Philadelphia” and Harry Nielson, “A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night,” which is one of the most beautiful records ever made. And I listen to The Stones.

Q: You”ve been a pioneer in the now popular green movement, founding the nonprofit New York Restoration Project (www.nyrp.org). Why are you so passionate about it?
A: I feel our city has the right to be a beautiful, clean and green city. When I came back to New York City from California in 1995, I felt the city wasn”t living up to its potential. So I started the New York Restoration Project with my own funds, surrounded myself with very good people and staff and we”ve been going strong for 15 years. We”ve been very lucky.

We”ve had a tremendous outpouring of support from New Yorkers of all stripes, all colors and all ages.

Of all the things I”ve done, I have to say I”m proudest of the fact that we”ve raised awareness of people that live in the city. Mostly what I am doing is common sense. All green thought is based on common sense. If you want to survive then you have to make sure that the planet in which you live is healthy.

Q: If you weren”t an actor, singer you”d be
A: I think would probably own a bookstore. I really love books. They”ve been my friends my whole life. To be surrounded by wonderful books is a real treat every day.

What Year Was Fao Schwarz Established: The Toys R Us Scavenger hunt has a lot of moms scouring the Internet to find out what year FAO Schwartz was founded.  The store, which has been featured in numerous hit films including the Tom Hanks hit Big, has been around since 1862 and is the oldest toy retailer in the United States.  It is now the destination of many celebrities to do their luxury toy stockups especially at their New York City flagship location.

FAO Schwarz wasn’t always a luxury toy retailer having gotten its start in Baltimore in 1862 where it operated under the name of Toy Bazaar.  The store which was owned by Frederick August Otto Schwarz soon  expanded to Philadelphia and Boston.   It wasn’t until 1880 that the Scwarz family moved its operations to New York City where it laid claim to being the largest dealer of toys in the city.  In 1896, the Schwarz family brought Santa Clause into the mix by proclaiming itself “The Original Santa Headquarters in New York”.

The Americans rested a host of important players, including Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan against the Czechs. The USA took the lead through Maurice Edu but strikes on either side of the interval from Tomas Sivok and Jan Polak put the Czechs 2-1 ahead. Herculez Gomez did his chances of going to South Africa no harm by grabbing an equaliser, but late goals from Martin Fenin and Tomas Necid gave the Czechs a 4-2 win.d586b1dd64ccer 1 usa vs turkey

Turkey beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in a friendly earlier this month. Goals from Arda Turan and Nihat Kahveci gave the Guus Hiddink coached side a 2-1 win at the Red Bull Arena in New York. Turkey’s last international game was against Northern Ireland The First True Test

On Tuesday night against the Czech Republic, Bradley’s choices reflected a desire to cut the team from 30 players to 23. With that task accomplished, he now turns to the arduous “team-building” process designed to prepare the U.S. squad for their battles in South Africa. He’s hinted that the 11 men who start against Turkey will also feature versus England on June 12. While the backline is riddled with injuries and could change

Obama says US rooting for World Cup squad

May 28, 2010 by

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama told the US World Cup squad he”d be pulling for them as they represent the country on one of sport”s greatest world stages next month in South Africa.

Obama acknowledged that the footballing extravaganza didn”t always resonate with US sports fans more atuned to baseball, basketball and gridiron football, but he told the team they had plenty of support.

“Everybody is going to be rooting for you. Although sometimes we don”t remember here in the United States, this is going to be the biggest world (stage) and you”re going to be representing all of us,” he said. “We are incredibly proud of what you”ve done already.”

Known as an avid basketball fan, Obama said he”d be keeping tabs on the footballers” World Cup progress.

“You will have somebody in the Oval Office who”s going to be watching ESPN to make sure that things are going OK,” he said.

Vice President Joe Biden, who will attend America”s World Cup opener against England on June 12, was also at the White House to greet the team.

Also on hand was former President Bill Clinton, who was recently named the honorary chairman of the bid committee trying to bring the World Cup back to the United States in 2018 or 2022.

Clinton, who also plans to attend some World Cup matches, was taken with the team”s attire for the visit – particularly their tan dress shoes.

“I want to be on this team just for the shoes,” Clinton said. “This is the only team that I”ve ever seen that had these cool shoes.”

Obama, who earlier in the day met with Duke University”s collegiate champion basketball team, agreed the World Cup squad were winners in the fashion stakes.

“Those are some sharp shoes,” he agreed.

The United States host Turkey in a friendly match at Philadelphia on Saturday and depart for South Africa on Sunday.

robin roberts

8cec066f58oberts robin robertsI don’t want you folks to think all I’m ever going to address in this space are those who have passed on, but I’ve got to react to the news, and I lost a piece of my boyhood yesterday with the passing of the great Robin Roberts, who died at his Florida home of natural causes at age 83.

Robin Roberts was one of my three great boyhood idols. There was Ted Kluszewski, Elgin Baylor, and there was Robin Evan Roberts, the ace righthander of the Philadelphia Phillies.

From 1950 through 1955, there was no one better. He won 20 games or more in each of those years, peaking at 28-7 in 1952, but that’s only half the story. His heart and competitiveness overruled common sense, both his own and that of his managers.

I rail about the way pitch counts and excessive caution have overtaken baseball as much as anyone, but there is no denying that things had to change, and the case of Robin Roberts may very well be Exhibit A. He was done as a great pitcher by the time he was 28, and here’s why.

In order to amass 138 wins in those six years, Robin Roberts averaged 39 starts and 327 innings a year! In 1953, when he was 23-16 for a very average Phillies team (which, after winning the pennant in 1950, is all they ever were for the remainder of his time in Philadelphia), he made 41 starts and pitched 346 2/3 innings. My mouth hangs open.

Gee, I wonder why they said he had lost something off his fastball when he went 19-18 in 1956.

He re-invented himself as a useful finesse pitcher for both the Astros and Orioles, for whom he was 13-7, 2.91 in 1964. But the damage had been done. Such a thing would be unimaginable today, when 200 innings is considered to be a benchmark.

The habit to amaze me in my early years was the fail-balls at Tiger Stadium. The sound of my mother’s voice will stay with me forever, and so will Harwell’s.
