Waitress was on phone to doctor of dying Jackson

LOS ANGELES: A cocktail waitress recounted how she was called by Michael Jackson”s personal doctor the day the pop icon died and heard a “commotion,” apparently as the medic struggled with the crisis.
Sade Anding, of Houston, Texas, was one of 11 people with whom the physician, Conrad Murray, spoke by telephone in the hours leading up to Jackson”s shock death on June 25, 2009.
In other testimony at hearings into whether Murray should stand trial for involuntary manslaughter, the court heard that 12 vials of the powerful sedative propofol which killed Jackson were found in a closet at his home.
The waitress said she had met Murray in a Texas steakhouse in February 2009. The pair had exchanged phone numbers, and she received a call from the doctor on the morning of the fateful day.
“He told me that he was doing well,” she said, adding she had cut him off and started talking, but realized five or 10 minutes later that Murray was no longer on the phone.
“I heard a commotion… coughing, mumbling of voices,” she said, adding that she was unsure if the mumbling was coming from Murray.
Anding said she stayed on the phone for about five minutes, saying it was unusual for Murray to stop responding. “I just remember saying, ”Hello? Hello? Hello? Are you there?” Are you there? Are you there?”” she said.
The waitress eventually hung up and tried to call Murray back and send him text messages, but got no reply.
Prosecutors allege that Murray, 57, negligently administered an overdose of the powerful sedative propofol to help Jackson sleep and then tried to cover it up. The doctor denies the charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Paramedics and emergency room doctors this week have said Murray initially failed to mention having administered propofol, and that Jackson appeared to have died at least 20 minutes before they arrived at his mansion.
On Thursday paramedic Martin Blount said that when he arrived Jackson seemed to have been dead for at least 20 minutes, despite Murray”s claim that he had stopped breathing a minute before they were called.
Blount added that Murray initially denied having given Jackson any medications, but said he saw the doctor holding a needle and spotted three bottles of the anesthetic Lidocaine on the floor.
In new evidence Friday coroner”s investigator Elissa Fleak said she found 12 vials of propofol in the wake of Jackson”s death.
One was found empty on the floor near the singer”s bed shortly after his death, while the other 11 were discovered four days later in a closet at his rented home.
Two had been opened and were found inside a dark-blue Costco bag, while the other nine, some of them open, were found in another bag, Fleak said.
Anding meanwhile said she heard nothing more until police contacted her. She called Murray, who apologized for involving her, and urged her to call his lawyer to be present if she met with detectives.
Los Angeles detective Dan Myers told the hearing that Murray had made or received 11 cellphone calls, totaling some 90 minutes of conversations, in the roughly five hours leading up to midday on the fateful day.
These included a 32-minute call to his medical practice in Las Vegas and an 11-minute call shortly before Murray called Jackson”s personal assistant at 12:12 pm to say the singer had had a “bad reaction.”
Prosecutors allege that Murray “abandoned his patient” after administering the propofol some time between 10:40 am and 11:00 am.
Murray could face up to four years in jail and lose his doctor”s license if the case goes to full trial and he is convicted.
Jackson”s death shocked the entertainment world and triggered intense debate over the performer”s health in the run-up to the London concerts, known as the “This is It” tour.
Cat Deeley mixes it up with comedy

Hollywood: Cat Deeley admits she was afraid of taking on the role of a vice
principal in this Sunday’s (1/9) episode of the Disney Channel’s “Shake It Up” series. However, she notes, “I think when you feel scared of something you want to do, you should definitely do it. Throw some obstacles in your way when you feel too comfortable.”
The bubbly “So You Think You Can Dance” hostess says “I hadn’t done any comedy in awhile, though it’s something I remember fondly.” Back in her earlier years of working on TV in the U.K., she performed “topical skits of things that had happened during the week, pastiches of comedy shows.”
The “Shake It Up” part, she says, demanded physical comedy — and contained an even bigger challenge. “I had to play strict and stern. It’s my first character like that, actually — very different for me. I found it difficult to be stern with these kids. They’re so much fun and so talented, they’ll absolutely blow you away, every single one of them. I don’t know how they handle all the demands of the show and also deal with school and agents and everything else they have to do. They’re so good I really did feel a little intimidated,” she says with a laugh.
The storyline has teenage dancer Rocky Blue (Zendaya Coleman) getting the idea that she’ll get more out of life if she hangs up her goodie two shoes image and breaks a few rules. “She’s sick and tired of being the good girl. She bubble wraps my entire office, the phone, everything. When I came in and tripped and fell, I really, really did it,” adds Cat. “I face-landed. I said, ‘Be sure you use that one.’”

Teen star Steinfeld shows new `Grit” in debut role

LOS ANGELES: John Wayne”s original “True Grit” was a vehicle for a worldly wise actor in his 60s in another gruff Old West role he long since had perfected.
The new take on “True Grit” is a star-making showcase for Hailee Steinfeld in her screen debut as Mattie Ross, the 14-year-old who sets the violent story of retribution in motion.
Wayne”s main trail buddy was Kim Darby, who was in her early 20s when she played Mattie in 1969”s “True Grit,” based on Charles Portis” novel. Joel and Ethan Coen”s version, opening Wednesday, more faithfully adapts Portis” story, with Steinfeld”s Mattie pulling a team of veteran actors in her wake, including Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper.
Steinfeld, who just turned 14, earned a supporting-actress nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Awards for “True Grit,” and she has buzz for the same honor at the Academy Awards.
Is she practicing her Oscar speech?
“No-o-o-o, not yet. I mean, honestly, just to be a part of it, that”s the biggest award I could get right now,” she said in an interview.
“It is so surreal. Recently, when I saw the film for the first time, just as the credits started rolling, I thought back immediately to the day I was sitting on the floor in my bedroom just waiting for the phone to ring, thinking to myself … whoever gets this job, it”s like winning the lottery. And now I see this film put together, and it”s just so incredible. I”m so proud of it.”
Her character is a force of nature, a 19th-century pioneer teen with a fierce puritanical streak who hires ornery lawman Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) to hunt down her father”s murderer (Brolin), with Damon a preening Texas Ranger joining the search.
The flowery rhythms of Portis” dialogue, delivered with almost Shakespearean flourish, were tough enough for the seasoned actors, let alone a newcomer who had acted only in student films, commercials and a couple of small TV roles.
Casting directors traveled the country for months, looking at thousands of girls, and the Coens met with a handful of the best.
“They”re all 14-year-old girls, and predictably, they”re all terrible. Not all, but 99-point-whatever percent,” Ethan Coen said.
Mattie was an especially hard role, requiring an inexperienced actress to convey her “very adult, very self-possessed, very stiff-necked Protestant sensibility,” Ethan Coen said. “You think, boy, that whole adult self-possession and the acting chops, maybe that doesn”t exist in a real 14-year-old girl.”
A few weeks before shooting started, they found Steinfeld, who lived in Los Angeles. The Coens auditioned her opposite Bridges and Pepper, who plays another outlaw Mattie encounters.
Just as Mattie was fully formed at 14, they found Steinfeld had maturity and instincts beyond her years.
“She”s totally unintimidated coming into this room with Jeff Bridges and Barry Pepper and doing these scenes,” Joel Coen said. “It”s not a question of experience or training or any of the rest of it. Either you”ve got it or you don”t, sort of genetically, naturally, whatever it happens to be.”
Bridges spends almost the entire movie in Steinfeld”s company, but any worries he had about his young co-star quickly vanished.
“I was concerned right up to the first day we shot a big dialogue scene, and then I saw how invested she was in the character, how much talent and skill she had as an actress,” Bridges said. “I was so thrilled and relieved.”
Brolin, whose breakout role came in the Coens” “No Country for Old Men,” said his own daughter auditioned to play Mattie. But there were no hard feelings when she got a look at who had won the role.
“I remember when my daughter came on the set and met Hailee, and she goes, `Oh my God! She”s perfect!”” Brolin said.
Steinfeld decided at age 8 she wanted to try acting, inspired by a cousin who was doing commercials and a friend who was in a stage play. She raised the idea with her father, a personal fitness trainer, and mother, an interior designer. Her parents insisted that she study acting for a full year to make sure she was serious.
Then she got an agent and started trying out for roles. Like many actors, child or adult, she spent years auditioning with little to show for it.
“The most frustrating part was, I would get very close to booking things, and the biggest thing that was held against me was I was always too green,” Steinfeld said. “I would be up against girls who had been acting since they could speak.
“That was frustrating, because I was thinking to myself, ”I must not be that bad if I”m getting that close, but I”m not getting it.” So I hit that point where I definitely became a little bit more serious about it. … And then, after that, things started to change.”
Once Steinfeld landed the “True Grit” role, the Coens treated her the same way they did the rest of the cast, making no note of her precocious talent, Damon said.
“It was almost like, don”t talk about the fact that this person next to you is levitating. Don”t make a big deal out of it. We”re not even going to acknowledge that it”s happening. Then at the end, you go …, `That girl was flying!”” Damon said.
Pepper marveled at Steinfeld”s stamina as they shot in the cold mountains near Santa Fe, N.M., “and she”s being dragged through rivers, and she”s got my cold leather boot on her neck, and she”s getting tossed around and shot at. I just thought, ”This is remarkable, the poise and the professionalism of this young woman.” She”s just off to the races. She showed true grit in a lot of different ways, because she took everything the brothers threw at her,” Pepper said.
Steinfeld is looking for her next film role. The acclaim she”s earning for “True Grit” should help, but she”s not fretting too much about where her career is headed.
“Don”t get me wrong. I don”t take this too seriously. I have fun with it,” Steinfeld said. “My parents always tell me, ”If you”re not having fun, you”re not in the right place.” And there”s not a moment in this, in everything, that I”m not having fun.”

Ranveer Singh in row with co-passenger on flight

Anushka Sharma, who shot into overnight fame with the smash hit Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, in which she was paired opposite the King Khan, has been all over the media since yesterday. And the sad part is that it’s not because of her forthcoming film, but it’s because of an alleged report that involves Ranveer Singh, her co-star of her forthcoming film Band Baaja Baaraat.
What happened was that the two actors were on their way to Delhi on a Kingfisher flight to promote Band Baaja Baaraat, when, suddenly a passenger (who was reportedly an IAS officer) started clicking pictures of Anushka, which angered Ranveer. News also has it that when the said passenger was asked to delete the pictures from his phone, he refused. The verbal spat later got ugly and the flight crew had to intervene.
After landing in Delhi, the two passengers requested the Kingfisher staff to provide them separate vehicles to go to the terminal. Reportedly, the two got into a scuffle this time outside the airport.
Both the parties were later brought to Palam Police station. A representative from Kingfisher airline accompanied them. However, reportedly, both the parties resolved the matter.

iPhone application maps happiness
Technology may not necessarily make us happier, but it can tell us when we are happiest.
A new iPhone application called Mappiness, designed by PhD student George MacKerron from the London School of Economics, maps happiness in Britain.
‘When you open it, it asks you a few questions and you agree to take part and tell it what times a day it can beep you and then from then on it beeps you – the default is twice a day – and asks you a few questions. Do you feel happy? Do you feel relaxed? Do you feel awake? I’ll say yes to all of those,’ MacKerron said.
The application matches the answers with data from the phone to develop an overview when and where people tend to be happiest.
MacKerron says the data being compiled will offer new insights into the kinds of things that make us feel better.
‘So far we’ve only had a very brief look at the data, but we found that Tuesday is in fact a slightly less happy day than either Monday or Wednesday, and is the least happy day of the week. I found that 8pm on a Saturday tends to be the happiest time. And we’ve had a quick look at happiness by area of the country. So far, Slough and the City of London have come very low down. Some places in Scotland and Dorset have come at the top of the list,’ MacKerron said.
In total, about 22,000 people have signed up for Mappiness.
