Tia Carrere Finds Tough Broads on Season 5 of ‘Celebrity Apprentice’

By Beck/Smith

TrendPK.com: Season five of “The Celebrity Apprentice” doesn’t debut until Feb. 19, so contestant Tia Carrere has to be circumspect about what she reveals regarding her journey on the show. But it can’t have been too hard on her — considering that now she’s now contemplating opening her own business back in her native Hawaii.

“The great thing was I found out I’m a really good team player. I’ve never been in a corporate environment before,” says the actress and Grammy-winning musician who rose to fame in the “Wayne’s World” movies. “I was pleased that I was able to anticipate people’s needs and be a self-starter. Most important, I promised myself going in that no matter what, I would maintain my integrity. There is no reason for being backbiting and manipulative. Other people are — but I guess that makes good TV, doesn’t it?

“I was surprised. Some of these broads are tough,” adds Carrere. She’s part of an eclectic group of 18 including Arsenio Hall, George Takei, Cheryl Tiegs, Penn Jillette, Clay Aiken, Victoria Gotti, Aubrey O’Day, Lisa Lampanelli, Adam Carolla, Victoria Gotti, Lou Ferrigno, Michael Andretti, Debbie Gibson, “Real Housewives of New Jersey’s” Teresa Giudice and Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider.
Carrere reports she was a last-minute addition to the cast. “They had asked me for the past few years, and I’d always kind of shied away from it because I knew it would be difficult. I was the last one to jump on. I didn’t have time to think about it. It was, ‘Let’s just see if make money for my charity,’ which is After-School All-Stars. It’s a group Arnold Schwarzenegger introduced me to nearly 20 years ago when we did ‘True Lies,’ that provides fitness and enrichment programs for kids all across the country.”

Even if she’d had the time, however, “You can’t prepare for this. What I like about the show is that we’re so exhausted and overwhelmed with the tasks we’re asked to do, people’s true personalities come through,” she notes. “Yeah, people put on this happy face, but when push comes to shove, all that wears off. I got some interesting insights about people: ‘Oh, you really went to that place? How disappointing.”

It’s already a ridiculously busy year for Carrere, who has just started filming her new recurring role on the USA Network’s “In Plain Sight,” and is also juggling hosting-producing chores on two more shows she says are going into production soon. “One is called ‘Forsaken Places’ and the other is called ‘Street Stars,’” she says. “I’ve got to go to Vancouver, and Albuquerque — and there’s another movie that I might do that would mean going to Montreal and Louisiana.”

Carrere admits she finds it “very hard” to be away from her six-year-old daughter for long stretches, but credits her ex-husband, British photojournalist Simon Wakelin for stepping up. “Bianca’s daddy is terrific about being right there.”

Who Invented the Oscars?

February 11, 2012 by

f971oscars multiple rows statues 600x248 Who Invented the Oscars?

TrendPK.com: The founders of the now infamous Academy were a motley crew as individuals, but when they first converged in Hollywood, then just a small town with dirt roads, sparks flew and fueled a common dream: to bring artistic validity to their beloved new medium.

Today, movies are so ingrained in our culture it is hard to imagine a time when former cowpunchers, prospectors, vaudevillians, even junk dealers made up the rules as they went along. Prohibition and the Great Depression were keeping everyone on edge, and the business was rife with murders and drug scandals. Something had to happen. And so on January 11th, 1927, thirty-six members of Hollywood’s elite and not-so-elite came together at the behest of MGM chief Louis B. Mayer. From Cecil B. DeMille to Mary Pickford, Harry M. Warner, who owned a bike shop before launching the revolutionary “talkie” The Jazz Singer, even Joseph M. Schenk, freed from jail just in time to discover Marilyn Monroe – each guest was more colorful than the last. Although they didn’t know it yet, these thirty-six achievers and dreamers gave birth to a golden child.

Who were these movers and shakers who would change movies forever? And what about Oscar, their famous son? He is fast approaching his 100th birthday, and is still the undisputed king of Hollywood. Yet with such dynamic parents, what else could we expect?

In Debra Pawlak’s new book, Bringing Up Oscar, readers will learn, as Pawlak tells USA TODAY in an interview, all about these 36 founders. “They were from all walks of life, but in 1927, these were all people who were at the top of their game in Hollywood,” Pawlak says. And what was their motivation? “Movies were getting bad press. Temperance groups had succeeded in outlawing alcohol, so they turned their attention to Hollywood. There was no place in the industry where people could come with their disputes, and people in the industry needed to support one another,” Pawlak continues in the interview. The Wall Street Journal explains further that “to a great extent, the formation of the Academy was an act of aspirational pride. Within little more than 20 years, the American movie itself had morphed from a parlor amusement into an art form of subtlety, grace and astonishing commercial success. The Academy’s founders wanted recognition for their life’s work, and they knew they wouldn’t get it from New York, whose theatrical and literary hierarchies would never admit that the movies had achieved a standing equivalent to that of the older arts.”

Critics, newspapers and industry insiders have all welcomed Pawlak’s efforts and bringing the life stories of these great figures in film history to the forefront for a new generation of readers. Michael Deeley, the Academy Award-winning producer of The Deer Hunter and the author of Blade Runners, Deer Hunters, and Blowing the Bloody Doors Off says that Pawlak’s book is “a thoroughly researched and very entertaining portrait of the men and women whose energy and talent created today’s world-wide American film industry.” Booklist has called Bringing Up Oscar a “fascinating account” and Publishers Weekly raved that “by skillfully weaving these highlights of Hollywood history throughout this Tinseltown tapestry, Pawlak succeeds in recreating that colorful era when flickers turned into features and silents converted to sound.”

ABOUT DEBRA ANN PAWLAK…

Debra Ann Pawlak has spent over ten years writing about Hollywood history. She is the author of Farmington and Farmington Hills, for Arcadia’s “Making of America” series, and has written a screenplay about Clara Bow. She lives in southeastern Michigan and is available for interviews at any time.

Shakti Kapoor’s son Siddhant, who is all set to make his debut as a gangster in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala, has now been signed on by Anurag Kashyap for his next directorial venture titled Ugly.

In the film, Siddhant will be seen playing a dark character, who is into drugs. But what Siddhant is more excited about is that in Ugly, he will get to share screen place with his aunt Tejaswini Kolhapure (his mother Shivangi’s sister). What many people don’t know is that Tejaswini’s debut film was Anurag Kashyap’s unreleased film Paanch (2003).

Ugly also stars actors Ronit Roy and Pallavi Sharda and will go on floors in March.

TrendPK.com: Jennifer Lopez has had a successful career in show business, but that doesn’t mean she is ready for her twins with Marc Anthony to go after the same career.

Lopez recently admitted that she would be more than supportive of her children if they chose to go into entertainment, but she won’t let them make that decision just yet, states RadarOnline.com.

“I don’t want them to be in the business at a young age. I just don’t think they need that burden, that pressure. They should have a normal life – go to school, play, grow up … If they want to go off and be artists or singers or dancers or pilots or architects or anything – then they have my full support,” Lopez commented.

However, she wouldn’t be too surprised if they do enter entertainment: “I can hear that Emme can sing. She loves to dance and will sit there for hours watching dance … She could be a choreographer. And I can see that Max is very comfortable in front of a camera.”

It is being rumored that Pivarnick is getting close with running back Ahmad Bradshaw, although she is denying that a relationship is blooming, states TMZ. “I’m not dating him … like, no. We’ve hung out together … we’re really close, he’s a cool dude,” Pivarnick explained.

Suu Kyi continues election-campaign trip

February 11, 2012 by

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi hit the campaign trail near her hometown of Yangon on Saturday, travelling to the constituency where she is standing for parliament for the first time.

The democracy icon has already made two campaign trips outside the city ahead of April s by-elections, but this is her first day taking to the streets of the rural township of Kawhmu, where she is contesting the vote.

Hundreds of cheering supporters lined the roads as her convoy left Yangon, waving flags of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party and photos of Suu Kyi and her father, Myanmar s independence hero Aung San.

The NLD cannot threaten the army-backed party s ruling majority even if it wins all of the 48 available seats, but the vote has important symbolic value as the first time Suu Kyi has been able to directly participate in a Myanmar election.

“I hope they will be free and fair. There have been a few hitches but I hope that these will be sorted out,” she told AFP on Friday.

A widely-expected win for Suu Kyi would lend strong legitimacy to the country s parliament, which first convened early last year and is dominated by former generals who kept her in detention for much of the past two decades.

The NLD won a landslide victory in an election in 1990, but the then-ruling junta never allowed the party to take power. Suu Kyi was a figurehead for the party s campaign despite being under house arrest at the time.

She was released from her latest stint in detention a few days after a much-criticised election in 2010, and the upcoming polls are being held to fill places vacated by those who have since become government ministers and deputy ministers.

Ahead of the campaign day, Suu Kyi insisted her party — which boycotted the 2010 election — was taking nothing for granted.

“We will work very hard to win all 48 seats. It s not a matter of expectations, it s a matter of hard work,” the Nobel Peace Prize winner said.

Controversy surrounding the 2010 vote means the by-elections will be heavily scrutinised.

But the new regime has impressed even sceptics with its reform process, which has included welcoming the NLD back into the political mainstream and signing ceasefire deals with ethnic minority rebels.

The release of hundreds of political prisoners has been particularly welcomed by Western powers — which imposed strict sanctions on Myanmar — leading the United States to begin restoring full diplomatic relations.

On Monday, Washington also announced a waiver to allow it to support assessments in the country by international financial institutions including the World Bank.

Despite Myanmar s progress, the brief detention of a leading dissident monk on Friday sparked concern among observers, coming less than a month after his release from a jail term imposed for his role in a 2007 anti-junta uprising.

Ramesh S Taurani files case against Deepika Padukone

February 11, 2012 by

Producer Ramesh S Taurani of Tips, who was miffed with Deepika Padukone post her last minute exit from his ambitious thriller Race 2, was prompt to take action against the actress.

Deepika’s impromptu exit from the film after having shot for a week upon being offered a Hollywood project, hasn’t gone down well with the producer, who on Thursday filed a complaint with the CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes Association) and the Association of Motion Pictures & TV Programme Producer of India (AMPTPP).

The fact that just after her exit from Race 2, Deepika announced that she would be doing Rajinikanth’s next film Kochadaiyaan was like rubbing salt on Taurani’s wounds.

CINTAA was quick to inform the actress about the complaint filed in her name by the filmmaker. Citing her unavailability to not having dates and being over-committed to other projects, the actress also seemed indifferent to the developments after having left the film in the lurch.

As per procedural norms, if an artist fails to respond to a complaint or grievance, the case then passes onto the FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees). If still not
addressed, the artist is then liable to face a NCD (Non-Cooperation Directive).

Explains senior producer Pahlaj Nihalani said, “If Taurani has filed a complaint against Deepika, she will have to honour the dates which she had allotted to him. If she has given the same dates to any other producer, she cannot shoot for the other project”

Says an upset Ramesh S Taurani “I have been a part of the Hindi cinema industry for 25 years. I have made several blockbusters. But I have never faced a situation like this before. Our directors and the other actors are extremely annoyed with her. Tips as a company in its last 25 years has never had a dispute with anyone in this industry, there
is no single case in the association which involves us.”

Produced by Tips, director duo Abbas-Mustan’s Race 2 was scheduled for a November release.
