Pink Floyd guitarist’s son arrested

LONDON: The son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted criminal damage after he was pictured swinging from Britain”s national war memorial during a student riot.

In a public apology Friday, Charlie Gilmour, 21, identified himself as the man pictured in several national newspapers swinging from the British flag on the Cenotaph in central London.

Thousands of student demonstrators went on the rampage through London on Thursday as the government narrowly won a parliamentary vote on raising university tuition fees as much as threefold.

“A 21-year-old man was arrested at his home address in Sussex (southeast England)… on suspicion of violent disorder, and attempted criminal damage of the Union flag, on the Cenotaph,” Scotland Yard said in a statement Sunday.

“He was taken to a Sussex police station where he has been further arrested on suspicion of theft. He remains in custody.”

Charlie Gilmour, who is the Pink Floyd star”s adopted son, said in his statement Friday that he was sorry for the “terrible insult” to the country”s war dead.

University, Gilmour said he did not realise it was the Cenotaph at the time.

“I would like to express my deepest apologies for the terrible insult to the thousands of people who died bravely for our country that my actions represented,” he wrote.

“I feel nothing but shame… I got caught up in the spirit of the moment.

“I did not realise that it was the Cenotaph and if I had, I certainly would not have done what I did.”

David Gilmour married author and journalist Polly Samson in 1994, and her son Charlie became the Pink Floyd star”s stepson.

Police meanwhile released images of 13 men and one woman they want to identify over the violent disturbances during the riot.

Some demonstrators attacked a car carrying Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and his wife Camilla. Some 35 people have been arrested.

This “contemporary lifestyle” brand will be launched later this year, the company announced on April 28. The hotel group is in negotiations with developers regarding properties in the Middle East, Northern Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia-Pacific.

The VENU Hotels will be five-star hotels designed “for those who seek a sophisticated immersion in the destination.” Jumeirah owns 11 top-end hotels including the “seven star hotel”, Burj Al Arab. The group seems to have had a profitable year with an occupancy rate of 92 percent on an average in its Dubai beachside properties during 2009, despite Dubai’s financial crisis.

They hope to have 30 hotels all over the globe by 2013, with 10 already in the pipeline, including the ones coming up at Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt and Shanghai. Such establishments have been termed as “branded boutiques,” because they seek to bring together the leisure and design-led character of a boutique establishment and the advantages a chain can offer consumers, such as loyalty points and an assured level of service. Let us hope their venture remains profitable despite the slowdown.

Leslie Jordan may be short in stature, but he is hugely funny in his autobiographical off-Broadway show, “My Trip Down the Pink Carpet,” based on his book of the same name.

An Emmy-winning actor who calls himself “the gayest man I know,” Jordan regales his audience in the cabaret-style Midtown Theater with stories about his conservative upbringing and his career in Hollywood.

“I am such a showoff. One of my huge character defects is that I love to talk dirty and shock people,” he says.

Besides telling celebrity-laden tales about his acting career, Jordan makes campy fun out of incidents from his lonely, showbiz-obsessed childhood in Chattanooga, Tenn.; his lifetime of homophobic self-loathing; and his adult battles with a drug-addicted lifestyle.

Jordan’s witty, energetic delivery, combined with his Southern drawl, amusing colloquialisms and obvious enjoyment of his own words, make for a fast-paced and mirthful 90 minutes.

Director David Galligan must have had quite a time reining in his star, who burbles with laughter at his own jokes. “Honey, I fell right out of the womb and landed smack dab in my mama’s high heels,” he chortles. When describing his overwrought romantic imaginings, Jordan repeatedly throws himself down onto the pink carpet on the stage.

Gleefully radiating flamboyance, Jordan bounds around a relatively modest set; Michael Hotopp is credited as scenic consultant. Besides the tasteful strips of pink carpet, there are two black cubes and a few pink velvet ropes attached to silver stanchions.

Six black-and-white posters featuring architectural bits of various theaters in New York and Los Angeles form the backdrop. In the center is a revolving door, through which Jordan either sashays or stumbles, depending on what part of his life he’s illustrating.

Also as Rihanna’s birthday approaches, according to news reports, her “friend” Matt Kemp plans to have a small private party for her. It was meant to be a surprised but Rih Rih caught on. Saks Girl

I think I need to convert to Saks girl, because they are officially my favourite department store this season. After having walked through Barneys and Bloomies (judging from the crowd, I assume Neiman Marcus to be the same), I can officially say that Saks is offering the BEST deals this sale season! Earlier this month (when I was pondering over my pink skirt), they had that weekend of extra 40% off already on sale items. While everyone else is currently doing that however, Saks has moved on to taking 50% off already on sale items, there are also a LOT more on sale items too! This sale began last week (privately) for Saks card holders and I heard the Saks New York was flooded with customers, literally fighting over each other for the latest stocks as they unpacked the boxes. This week it is open to everyone and it’s craaaazy (I believe they are having a “black week” instead of black friday, so better get there early!).

To begin with, the traffic on their website must be phenomenal, because the website is constantly down and I’m led to a “Sorry we’re experiencing technical problems” page every few clicks. And when I DO get onto the page, it appears that many sizes are already out! Luckily for me, Saks Fifth in Chicago is not exactly the busiest department store in town (this honor belongs to Nordstroms and Bloomies) and there were still some stuff left in my size (kind of) when I visted today. So I swiped this Rebecca Taylor dress for 1/3 of the price!! I believe it was 40% off and then another 50% off. I was considering it when it was at 40% off, but when I saw it was another 50% off, it was almost a no brainer. It’s not super special, but if you look at it more closely, it has mini dark purple polka dot prints on it in felt. And when you swirl, the dress swirls with you. It just feels so cute and fun! The back is also a racer back design, which I thought was very intriguing. I am super happy with this find (besides the fact that I had to get it in a 4 instead of a 2, but I figure that the dress is supposed to be a bit loose!).
What got me super psyched and smiling all the way home and then dancing around wearing them like a crazy person (in the privacy of my apartment of course) though were these Stuart Weitzman pumps (except mine are actually sling backs). I’ve been eying them for a week now, ever I caught sight of them on the sales rack. I asked HG what she thought and we agreed that they were very classic looking pumps and would be worth it (it was at 40% off back then). So today when I passed the shoe floor and saw that the racks (and the whole floor for that matter) was literally empty, I had to stop by and check out my shoes. Lo and behold, they were also another 50% off. I was SO psyched, I immediately picked them up and tried them on even though the store was closing then. Unfortunately they only had a size 5.5 left (I’m a 6). But since they’re sling backs, I didn’t think half a size mattered as I can adjust the straps. Also, I tried them on and made sure that my feet isn’t sticking out the back (a big no no). While I was waiting for the sales guy to get me the full pair, I watched women all around me in a flurry grabbing and trying on shoes, furiously sweeping up 70% off Jimmy Choo boots and Louboutins in a mad rush to buy all they can before the sales people refuse to serve us. It was quite an amazing sight. THIS was what I’d imagined black friday to be- I guess there won’t be much left now for black friday (we asked and they’re not planning to restock, they’ve been on this mode all week). It’s a good thing I got to my pumps on time!

It’s amazing what a good bargain can do for one’s constitution. As you can tell, I am still super hyped about it

Pink Toed Tarantula

Pink Toed Tarantula, There’s a lot of searching going on for information about the pink toed tarantula.

Simply put it’s a species of tarantula which, when adult, has pink feet: there, bet you couldn’t guess that from the name!

Actually, if looks very cute (if you’re into spiders that is) and the babies are even more so: the colouration reverses as they mature. So the baby ones are pink all over but with dark little toes.

The reason they’re so popular as pets is that they’re very calm and rarely attack. They cannot, unlike many other species of tarantula, shoot their hairs into things, although  the hairs on their abdomen can cause irritation and an allergic reaction if you happen to be allergic to them.

Much of the searching going on is for “pink toed tarantula bite” and one would assume that someone’s woried about having been bitten. In humans this isn’t a problem: about equivalent to a wasp sting.

Although do note, there are humans who are sufficiently allergic to wasp stings (so called anaphylactic shock) that one can kill them. So while the pink toed tarantula is not dangerous, just irritating, to most of us, this isn’t true for everyone.

To set her apart from the pack of pros who usually don clothes and shoes with their names or nicknames on them, Austin designed an emblem for Melanie to wear on her shoes that reads, “BELIEVE.” Melanie planned to have Adidas custom-stitch her name into the back of her shoes until Austin designed the BELIEVE plate for the back of her pink and yellow tennies. Apparently the Open requires players’ names to appear on their clothing, but Melanie went ahead with the alteration anyway.

Clearly it worked. Just a year ago Melanie was ranked 178 in the U.S., and indeed it appears Austin’s faith is helping her shine. After this weekend’s wins she told reporters, “I played with no fear today. For me, it’s all about that. It’s believing that I can beat these girls and hang there with them. If I didn’t have that, then there’s no way I’d…win today…That’s how I won. I believe I can do it.”
