BB murder case: Court grants bail to accused officers

Anti-Terrorism Court Rawalpindi Judge Rana Nisar Ahmed has approved the petition filed for bail of former City Police Officer Saud Aziz and former SP Khurram Shahzad in Shaheed Benazir Bhuttos murder case.

Earlier, both the officers appeared before the court and assured the latter of consistent appearance on orders and submitted Rs0.1million bonds. It merits to mention that FIA filed a petition in the court that BBs security officer CPO Saud Aziz changed her security at the eleventh hour, which caused her murder. While SP Khurran Shahzad told a court that Aziz forced him to change his duty venue.

Security plan for Dr Imran’s funeral made

KARACHI: Karachi police have made the security plan during the funerals of slain Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, Dr Imran Farooq.

Karachi Capital City Police Officer Fayaz Leghari told Trend Pk that 3,000 policemen would be deployed for the security arrangements during the funerals of Dr Imran Farooq.

Special monitoring cells would be made in the offices of DIG East and West. The bomb disposal squad will check the whole area before the funeral procession.

Taliban vow more attacks on NATO supplies

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Taliban on Monday vowed more attacks on tankers transporting fuel to NATO troops in Afghanistan, a move likely to prolong the closure of a vital supply route and further strain ties with ally Washington.

Angered by repeated attacks by NATO helicopters on militant targets within its borders, Pakistan blocked one of the supply routes for NATO troops in Afghanistan after one strike killed three Pakistani soldiers last week in the western Kurram region.

The incursions and the sealing of the supply route, now in its fifth day, have heightened tensions between the United States and Pakistan, whose long alliance is often uneasy.

LAHORE: The police officer who started to dance with jubilation after an assault on the protesting lawyers at Lahore High Court (LHC), has been suspended by the authorities on Monday.

According to police sources, after a successful assault on lawyers to prevent their rally under imposed Section-144, police Inspector Mustafiz began to jump and dance in front of LHC with delight.

Many other policemen were also seen in footage who were sharing their euphoria with Inspector Mustafiz.

The police launched a stern baton charge and tear gas shelling on the lawyers to prevent them from their agitation against LHC. SAMAA

Thousands of Afghans stage anti-US protest

KABUL: Police fired into the air to disperse thousands of anti-American protesters in Afghanistan’s capital on Wednesday, witnesses and police said, with one person killed and at least five wounded.

Demonstrators chanted “Death to America”, “Death to Christians”, and “Death to Karzai”, the latter referring to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, in the biggest protests since unrest erupted last week over plans by a U.S. pastor to burn the Quran.

“There are more than 10,000 of the demonstrators and some of them are waving the Taliban flag,” police officer Mohammad Usman.

The protests come three days before a parliamentary election which the Taliban have vowed to disrupt. The election is a key test of stability in Afghanistan before U.S. President Barack Obama conducts a war strategy review in December.

Police firing kills 13 protesters in Indian Occupied Kashmir

At least 13 protesters have been killed in clashes with police troops in Indian Occupied Kashmir that have been partly fueled by a report of a Quran being desecrated in the United States.
The death toll Monday was the highest since separatist protests broke out in June against Indian rule in the disputed region.
Tens of thousands of violent anti-Indian demonstrators ignored a curfew and flooded the streets, burning government buildings and throwing rocks at police stations.
A police officer said security forces shot at some of the crowds, killing 13 people and wounding dozens more. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with media.

Karachi CCPO Wasim Ahmed transferred as DG, FIA

KARACHI: The Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Karachi, Waseem Ahmed, has been transferred from his post and appointed as the Director General (DG) of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), SAMAA learnt Thursday.

Waseem Ahmed took charge as CCPO Karachi in June 2008.

On the other hand, Director General FIA Zafarullah Khan has been appointed as Chairman National Counter Terrorism Authority.

According to sources, the names of Wajid Durrani, Mushtaq Shah, Zafar Farooqui, Fayyaz Laghari and Captain Falak Khursheed are under consideration for Karachi’s new CCPO. SAMAA

Heavy rains expected in flood areas

ISLAMABAD: Heavy rains are expected in areas already hit by the worst floods in 80 years, the meteorological department said on Friday, raising the possibility of more destruction.

“We”re forecasting widespread rains in the country, especially in flood-affected areas,” said Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, director general of the department.

Rehman warns ‘terrorist elements’ to be ready for stern action

KARACHI: Interior Minister Friday reiterated his warning to the elements involved in the terrorist activities in Karachi to stop violence or be ready for a stern action against them.

He was given a presentation by Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Wasim Ahmed here at Central Police Office on the recent unrest and law and order situation in the metropolis. Provincial Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza, IG Sindh Sultan Salahuddin, Babar Khattak and the heads of law enforcing agencies were present on the occasion.

Later, talking to media men the Interior Minister said no criminal who has taken law in his hand will be spared while Rangers have been ordered to ‘shoot on sight’ anyone seen involved in terrorist activity.

“I have directed the police officers to establish peace in their respective areas,” he told the reporters.

On the occasion, Provincial Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza said 195 suspects have been held in Karachi during the ongoing crackdown against criminals.

He said 87 suspects were arrested from West Zone, 12 from South Zone and 87 from East Zone while the Investigation Unit has held 9 accused.

The Home Minister said 9 of these have been identified for involvement in the recent incidents of targeted killings in the city.

He said a task force has also been formed to put a halt on the targeted killings and murder of citizens. The task force will collect evidence from the eye witnesses and have sketches of the accused drawn for the arrest of criminals, he added.
