NEW YORK: The Quartet of Middle East peace mediators will on Tuesday call on Israel to extend its settlement moratorium, saying the freeze has had a positive impact as the two sides seek a peace deal within the next year, according to a draft statement seen by Reuters.
“The Quartet noted that the commendable Israeli settlement moratorium instituted last November has had a positive impact and urged its continuation,” said the statement, due to be issued by the Quartet, comprised of the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia.
The Quartet statement, to be issued after a meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, increases pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to extend a 10-month settlement freeze due to expire at the end of September.

Trust deficit main issue between India and Pakistan: Singh
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said that trust deficit was the main obstacle in any improvement in ties between India and Pakistan and sans addressing it no development could be expected.
Prime Minister Gilani and I agreed that trust deficit was the problem blocking progress, Singh told reporters, referring to recent discussions between the two men in the Bhutanese capital Thimphu.
Pakistan is our neighbour. It is my firm belief that India cannot realize its full development potential till we have best relations with our neighbours, he said, as he reviewed his year in power since re-election. Two weeks ago, India and Pakistan sought to build on a recent thaw in relations by announcing foreign minister-level talks in July as part of efforts to revive their abandoned peace talks.
Pakistan’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi invited his Indian counterpart SM Krishna to Islamabad on July 15. We are going to make a beginning. The composite dialogue was suspended soon after attack on Mumbai, Singh said.
Rogers wins Amgen Tour of California
Michael Rogers survived challenges from both Dave Zabriskie and Levi Leipheimer to win the 2010 Amgen Tour of California. Rogers wins $200,000 for his team and also claim his second Tour race in 2010.
The Australian native took a nine second lead over Zabriskie into the final day and when they crossed the finish line that gap remained unchanged, but not without a fight. None of the three main challengers did much in the way of pushing until they hit the final lap, but once the action started it proved to be dramatic. Just before his first charge, Leipheimer suffered a flat tire, which not only cost him time, but also cost him energy which he had to expend in order to catch up to the lead pack. But once he did rejoin the pack, Leipheimer made his first charge, forcing Rogers and then Zabriske to chase him.
For a few brief moments it appeared Rogers might not have a counter in him, but he mustered the strength and as they reached the descent, it became clear that Rogers would be able to hold on and win the title. Ryder Hesjedal, who is a teammate of Zabriskies on the Garmin-Transitions Team, won the final stage with a huge push at the end, tracking down and passing George Hincapie of the BMC Racing Team.
