Omar Abdullah Hails De-linking Dialogue From Terror
Srinagar: The chief minister, Omar Abdullah, Thursday said the cordial meeting between the prime ministers of India and Pakistan had assumed historical import, as both the nations had agreed to de-link dialogue from terrorism.
Omar welcomed the joint statement of the two premiers, saying the success of their meeting at Sharm-al Sheikh was a victory not only of his own stand but of billions of people of sub-continent who strongly believe in peace and abhor violence.
The CM said in the past stray “incidents of terror” had delayed composite dialogue, like the Mumbai attack. He said agreement between the prime ministers to discuss all outstanding issues between the two countries was a positive development, which will lead “all of us towards an era of peace and tranquility and defeat forces having vested interest in violence.”
Omar said that the success of their meeting lies in the fact that both have agreed to work for creating an atmosphere of mutual trust and confidence and promote regional cooperation. “We were waiting for this agreement for long as it will silence forces inimical to peace,” he said, appealing people of the state to gear themselves up “for golden chapter of peace, development and mutual cooperation.”
Omar reiterated that dialogue was the only way to resolve all outstanding issues, and agreement between the two premiers has strengthened this belief further.
The chief minister said that everybody was conscious of the fact that both the countries and Jammu and Kashmir in particular had suffered due to their bickering. “Our economy has collapsed during the past two decades and we are struggling hard to revive the same so that the development of the state is ensured,” he said.
It is a positive development that the two premiers have stressed on development and elimination of poverty.

Helicopter Crash in Srinagar, 1 killed
SRINAGAR: A Hindu pilgrim was killed and five others hurt when a helicopter carrying worshippers to a Himalayan shrine in Indian occupied Kashmir crashed on Thursday, officials said.

The helicopter came down three kilometers (two miles) short of the Amarnath cave, situated 3,800 metres (12,800 feet) above sea level. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
“A woman devotee was killed and five others, including the pilot, were injured in the crash,” Madan Mantoo, an official associated with the two-month long pilgrimage told AFP.
Two of the seriously injured were hospitalised, he said.
The majority of Amarnath pilgrims trek up to the shrine but rich devotees often use a privately-operated helicopter service.

Police Contests Army’s Claims on Terrorists killed: Jammu and Kashmir
Kupwara: The claims by the Army having neutralised a maximum number of militants, who sneaked into Kashmir recently, have been hotly contested by the local police who have picked up trails of militants and the FIRs registered showing only 25 being killed.
Notwithstanding the recent claims of Brigadier General Staff of 15 Corps Gurmeet Singh that 32 militants had been killed and that there were only two infiltration bids since March, the figures with the local police have a different story to tell as they have spotted fresh batches in so far as Ganderbal and Bandipore areas of North Kashmir are concerned.
As per the statement of a local militant who surrendered along with Syed Moinullah Shah, a group of 120 militants, launched by the Hizbul Mujahideen’s Imtiyaz Alam, entered into Kashmir valley through Kel (Neelum Valley) and reached Bunar forest into Gurez through Naushera and Nad areas in North.
Though Army claimed that 12 militants of the group were killed in an avalanche while nearly 82 others had returned, the FIR registered by the Army showed only one unidentified militant was killed. There is no FIR, a mandatory procedure after gunbattle, of the 11 other militants that the Army claimed to have killed.
Army declined to give any clarification and there were no replies to questions mailed to Col JS Brar, spokesman for Srinagar-based 15-Corps, despite repeated reminders.
The Army’s claim that it had arrested Shah, a resident of Dhir district of North West Frontier Province in Pakistan, had loopholes as the FIR numbers 70/2009 and 71/2009 in Gurez area of North Kashmir show that Shah along with a local militant — Iabal Dajeo, a Bandipora resident — had surrendered after being pressurised by the police.
Later, the Army took over Shah’s custody as he was a foreign militant and left the local militant with the police. Shah was paraded before the media in last week of April but the press interaction was cut short after he spilled the beans that he had not been arrested but had surrendered.
About the number of terrorists, the Army claimed that 56 militants had infiltrated into the Valley since March 20, out of which 32 had been killed, one arrested and 17 were still at large. Six were believed to have been buried in an avalanche.
However, the facts registered with various police stations in Kupwara, Bandipore and Tanghdar districts show a different figure in which the causality was only 25 which included death of three terrorists because of extreme cold conditions.
