VINEYARD HAVEN: President Barack Obama said on Saturday Iraq could ‘chart its own course’ and told Americans the drawdown of U.S. troops helped fulfill a promise he made during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Obama, who is vacationing on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard, declared in his weekly radio and Internet address that “the war is ending” and pledged to take care of troops who are returning home.

The U.S. military recently cut its strength to under 50,000 troops in Iraq, helping to make good on Obama’s promise to end the war launched 7-1/2 years ago by his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.

Obama’s Saturday remarks may be a preview of a rare, televised address the president plans on Tuesday evening from the White House Oval Office about the troop drawdown.

DAMBULLA: Sri Lanka”s Farveez Maharoof grabbed 5-42, including a hat-trick, as India were shot out for 209 in the last league match of the Asia Cup on Tuesday.

The right-arm seamer trapped Ravindra Jadeja leg-before, bowled Praveen Kumar and had Zaheer Khan caught behind off successive deliveries in his ninth over at the Rangiri stadium in Dambulla.

The match is a warm-up for Thursday”s final which the two teams will contest after knocking Pakistan and Bangladesh out of the four-nation tournament.

India suffered a major blow when opener Virender Sehwag was ruled out of both matches after sustaining a hamstring injury against Pakistan on Saturday.

Dinesh Karthik, who flew in from Chennai to replace Sehwag, hit 40 off 43 balls after an opening stand of 58 with Gautam Gambhir.

Sri Lanka, who rested three frontline bowlers in Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekera and Muttiah Muralitharan, reduced India to 110-4 by the 23rd over.

Rohit Sharma (69) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (41) retrieved the situation by adding 79 for the fifth wicket, before the Indian captain was run out.

Dhoni”s dismissal triggered a collapse as India slipped from 189-4 to 189-8 in the space of four deliveries as Maharoof sliced through the lower order.

India were all out with 7.3 overs still remaining from their allotted 50.

Australia pile up 184-5 against India

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: David Warner smashed a rapid 72 as Australia piled up 184 for five against India in the teams” opening Super Eights match at the World Twenty20 here on Friday.

Australia were given a blistering start by left-hander Warner and fellow opener Shane Watson (54) who put on 104 for the first wicket in 11 overs after India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss.

Warner faced just 41 balls and struck seven of the innings”s 16 sixes.

Given such a start, India did well to restrict Australia to under 200.

Left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh (two wickets for 20 runs) checked Australia”s progress. He had Warner well caught by wicketkeeper Dhoni and the duo combined again as Brad Haddin was stumped.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who started the match with a maiden, a remarkable achievement in view of what followed, conceded just 15 runs from his four overs.

But Australia”s openers were severe on left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, whose two overs went for 38.

Jadeja conceded six consecutive sixes, split across those two overs, with both Watson and Warner striking three in a row.

Watson, as in his 81 against Pakistan this tournament, was given an early reprieve when dropped on seven, a difficult chance, by a diving Jadeja at square leg following a miscued sweep off Harbhajan with Australia 12 without loss in the third over.

Watson, who said after his display against Pakistan he liked batting with Warner because the left-hander went for his shots from the first ball, was the one to inflict early damage this time.

He clouted Jadeja”s fourth ball for six, pulled the fifth high over midwicket and sent the sixth soaring over deep backward square.

Jadeja returned for the tenth over and probably wished he hadn”t as Warner flat-batted his first ball back for six over long-on.

The second ball, tossed up, was sent soaring into the gap between mid-wicket and long-on, with the third driven straighter.

Australia were running riot and their paceman received plenty of punishment too with left-arm quick Zaheer Khan, in for the injured Praveen Kumar, seeing 45 runs taken off his four overs.

Watson went to his fifty with a six off a Yusuf Pathan long-hop before he was bowled next ball to end a 32-ball innings featuring six sixes and a solitary four.
