MUMBAI: Soaring prices are making Indians hesitant about buying gold as the Hindu festival of Diwali approaches, despite it being seen as an auspicious time to purchase the precious metal.
Firm international and local prices have made people delay or stagger buying, hoping that prices level off as the annual wedding season starts next month, analysts and consumers said.
Shantilal Makwana is typical of many Indians. He is looking to buy jewellery for his teenage daughter, which he will give to her when she gets married.
But he has been watching and waiting for three months to see if prices fall.
“I’ve saved up money. It is an auspicious time, but gold is just too costly,” said the 46-year-old, who works at an electronics repair shop in India’s financial capital, Mumbai.
“I will wait till prices drop,” he told AFP.

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan government has said its troops collected more than four million dollars worth of gold jewellery during the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels.
Chief government whip Dinesh Gunawardena told parliament on Wednesday that security forces picked up the precious items during the final months of the decades-long civil war last year.
“The army’s 58th division and the military police found 110 kilos of gold jewellery. The value of the jewellery is about 490 million rupees (4.4 million dollars),” Gunawardena said.
The haul “was being legally handed over to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka,” he said, without giving further details.
The Civil Monitoring Commission (CMC), a Tamil rights group, said the government should trace owners and return all the goods.
“We don’t know where the military found this jewellery, but what is clear is
Nadal and Federer lead world’s top four into semis
World number one Rafa Nadal survived a scare and Roger Federer ended a run of recent losses to Tomas Berdych to lead the world’s top four players into the semi-finals of the Toronto Masters on Friday.
Defending champion Andy Murray and world number two Novak Djokovic also posted quarter-final wins to complete the all-star quartet but it was the possibility of a Nadal-Federer final that had tennis fans buzzing at the end of riveting day of action on the Canadian hardcourts.
Playing in his first event since winning Wimbledon last month, Nadal has at times appeared to still be in holiday mode, and the Spaniard was again slow out of the blocks against Philipp Kohlschreiber rallying for a nervy 3-6 6-3 6-4 win.
While Nadal could not have expected such a punishing workout from the 37th ranked German, who has just one win over a top 10 ranked opponent this season, Federer stepped onto centre court knowing the giant challenge that awaited him and responded with an inspired 6-3 5-7 7-6 victory over Berdych.
The towering 1.96 meters Czech has had Federer’s measure this season beating the Swiss twice, including an upset win in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
Berdych had looked poised to continue his winning sequence over Federer when he stormed to a 5-2 lead in the third but a relentless Federer refused to fold, finally getting the break he needed with Berdych serving for the match at 5-3.
With a breathless centre court crowd on its feet, there was more drama to come during a pulsating tiebreak that saw Federer jump ahead 4-0 then grimly hang to clinch the victory 7-5 when Berdych sent a return into the net.
Murray, who must at least reach Sunday’s final to keep his number four ranking, produced his best effort of the week, easing to a 6-2 6-2 victory over red-hot David Nalbandian, ending the Argentine’s 11-match winning streak.
Djokovic, the Canadian champion in 2007, also had smooth passage into the last four beating France’s Jeremy Chardy 6-2 6-3.
Chinese ‘gold’ brings Egyptians a taste of little luxury
In Egypt, Chinese gold– an affordable imitation of the precious metal– has swamped the jewellery market, granting the poor a little taste of luxury.
As in many other countries, the Egyptian market has been flooded with Chinese goods — everything from electronics to plastic cigarette lighters have been shouldering locally made goods out of the way.
And in a country where 40 percent of the 80 million population lives on less than two dollars a day, the so-called Chinese gold has been widely welcomed, particularly by young couples who struggle to afford the traditional marriage dowry.
The current price of one gram of 24 carat gold in Egypt stands at 218 Egyptian pounds (38 dollars), while the Chinese version — a mixture of aluminium, iron and other metals — only costs around 20 to 30 Egyptian pounds (four to five dollars) per gram.
Just a short walk from the Khan al-Khalili tourist bazaar is Haret al-Yahud, the old Jewish quarter where gold workshops churned out designs from simple wedding bands to elaborate necklaces. But many of the jewellers there have switched to selling Chinese gold to improve business.
For young couples struggling to start a new life together, the arrival of Chinese gold has removed at least one obstacle to the costly traditions that surround marriage, including the dowry or shabka.

Merkel Has Avoided Giving Debt-Plagued Greece
BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has avoided giving debt-plagued Greece a commitment of financial assistance, as Athens was rattled by more strikes and violent protests by unions outraged by harsh economic austerity measures.
Greece didn’t ask for financial support, and Germany didn’t offer any in talks Friday between Merkel and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, while Merkel said there would be a common push to crack down on market speculation that has led Greece’s cost of borrowing to skyrocket.
“I repeat that Greece has not requested financial support … and I thank (Germany) for its cooperation in facing speculators,” Papandreou said on the second of a four-city tour that began in Luxembourg Friday morning and will take him to Paris Sunday and Washington on Tuesday.
“Germany can express its solidarity,” Merkel said, adding that she made it clear that “we are here to help, show understanding.”
Merkel added that her country could help Greece with its expertise and in other ways. Strict fiscal policy has helped propel Germany to Europe’s biggest economy.
But she didn’t give any specifics of how Germany would show solidarity, or what concrete steps will be taken to tackle speculators.
“The support was political support, without mechanisms,” government spokesman Giorgos Petalotis told reporters after the meeting, which was also attended by Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou.
Still, the Greeks insisted they were satisfied with the outcome of the meeting, and had received all that could be expected.
“We need political and moral support and we got that today from the German government,” Papandreou said.
Earlier this week, the European Commission said it would call in market regulators and banks to discuss possible problems with the market for credit default swaps on sovereign debt.
Gold Rose Toward $1,140 An Ounce, Ending The Week
LONDON: Gold rose toward $1,140 an ounce, ending the week about $20 higher as a sovereign debt crisis in Greece spurred buying of the metal as a hedge against currency volatility.
Palladium rose to its highest in more than two years, boosted by optimism about global autocatalyst demand and possible near-term tightness in the physical markets, analysts said.
Gold’s ability to post gains in the face of a firm dollar indicated the inverse relationship between the greenback and the metal could further weaken, said Tom Hartmann, analyst at California-based broker-dealer Altavest.
“With everything that is going on in Europe, people are losing trust in different types of paper currencies,” and that should benefit gold, Hartmann said.
Gold has traditionally been used as a safe haven in times of economic and political uncertainty, as the metal’s intrinsic value is not dependent on any fiat currency.
Spot gold was at $1,132.85 an ounce at 2:27 p.m. EST (1927 GMT), against $1,131.45 late in New York on Thursday.
U.S. gold futures for April delivery on the COMEX division of the NYMEX settled up $2.10 at $1,135.20 an ounce.
The February non-farm payrolls report showed that U.S. employers cut fewer jobs than expected during the month, and the unemployment rate held steady at 9.7 percent, bolstering views the economy was on the brink of creating jobs.
The dollar initially rallied on the news due to economic optimism, but the euro later rebounded, supporting gold.
Concern over the fiscal health of peripheral euro zone economies such as Greece, Italy and Spain have weighed heavily on the euro this year. It is currently down nearly 5 percent versus the dollar in 2010.
Uncertainty over what the next British election may mean for U.K. debt has also heightened volatility in the European currencies, lifting interest in gold as an alternative asset.
Gold priced in euro and sterling terms are hovering near record highs reached earlier this week.
“The shift in sovereign risk away from Greece on Friday has helped support gold, and risk appetite is higher because of the better-than-expected job number,” said James Steel, chief commodities analyst at HSBC.
A Wall Street rally and oil’s sharp gains amid better economic sentiment also boosted gold’s inflation hedge appeal.
Among other precious metals, palladium hit a high of $475.50, the loftiest level since June 2008. It was last at $475 against $458.50.
“The market is very enthusiastic about the prospect of gasoline-driven vehicles, and there is some near-term physical tightness, which is supporting the market,” Steel said.
Platinum group metals are used in catalytic converters to clean auto exhaust fumes. Gasoline-powered vehicles use a greater percentage of palladium and less platinum than diesel engines, which require more platinum and less palladium.
Steady increase in the holdings of U.S. palladium and platinum exchange-traded funds also underscored strong investment demand. As of Thursday, ETFS physical palladium (PALL.P) shares held about 470,000 ounces, and ETFS physical platinum (PPLT.P) had about 270,000 ounces.
Palladium has outperformed other precious metals this year, rising 17 percent compared with a 7.5 percent rise for platinum, 3.3 percent for gold and 2.7 percent for silver.
Silver was at $17.30 an ounce against $17.10, tracking gains in gold. Platinum was at $1,574.50 an ounce against $1,576.50.
