MULTAN: Chief of his own faction of Pakistan Muslim League, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday distributed hundreds of free laptops among students during a ceremony in Multan, TrendPK reports.

On the occasion he announced that Lahore’s IT tower would be named after Arfa Karim, the computer prodigy of Pakistan died last month.

Addressing the ceremony, attendant by hundreds of students, the PML-N chief hailed his brother Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for his ‘tireless efforts’ to promote education in the province despite hurdles.

“The credit of this success goes to Shahbaz Sharif and the Punjab government,” he said.

The former prime minster suggested the CM, which also central PML-N leader, to chalk out a plan for instituting an engineering university in Multan, the home town of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

He announced that three lakh more free laptops would be given to talented students of the province after June this year, claiming that “computers are being distributed purely on merit and without any discrimination”.

“We are leading our generations to the age of laptops, steering the students out from the age of selates. This is what PML-N has been carrying on since 1990 and it’s only we who are thinking for next 20 years,” Sharif asserted. TrendPK

The heavy rain also caused problems for the citizens as rainwater accumulated in the low-lying areas while heavy showers also created traffic problems as roads remained submerged in water, suspending routine life for quite some time.

Most streets and roads in the city were inundated with rainwater, exposing the planning of the departments concerned.
According to the Met Office the city received about 81mm rain.

Rain also showered in different cities of the province including Gujranwala, Kasur, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Sialkot, Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Shallow quake hits southwest Pakistan: USGS

QUETTA: A shallow 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit southwest Pakistan on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 5:53 am (0053 GMT) around 330 kilometres (200 miles) southwest of Quetta, the capital of the province of Baluchistan, at a depth of eight kilometres.

A powerful 7.2-magnitude quake that hit southwest Pakistan in January sent people rushing from their homes in panic but did not cause significant casualties.

Pakistan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005 that killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless, mainly in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. AGENCIES

ANP demands new province in Balochistan

Addressing the party units of tribal areas in Peshawar, ANP’s provincial president Afrasiab Khattak said that tribal areas should be declared a province to include tribal people in the national stream.

He said that South Pakhtunkhwa Province should be formed for the people of Balochistan and party should initiate consultation over the issue.

He said that imposition of Political Parties Act and representation of the tribal people in the provincial assembly was dire need of time.

Khattak added that Pakhtuns are one nation and they should not be separated due to geographic barriers.

He said that he was concerned about gorgeous development in Murree and devastating backwardness in Fort Minro.

He made it clear that he was ready to talk on the issue whether the province should be termed Saraiki, Pajnad or Southern Punjab.

Hashmi reiterates call for new provinces in Punjab

Talking to the media at his residence in Multan, Javed Hashmi said Punjab should take the lead and set up new provinces on administrative basis rather than ethnic lines. He also suggested that the province comprising Bahawalpur and Multan should be named Punjnad. However, he added that he only suggested a name and that a new name could be decided with referendum.

Javed Hashmi said also took a swipe at the Peoples Party, saying the ruling party is threatening Pakistan’s security. In the same breath, he called Nawaz Sharif the country’s most popular leader, saying PML-N’s support was crucial for the formation of new provinces in Punjab.

Hashmi repeated that he would support legislation to create a new province in south Punjab. “The creation of new provinces is necessary to improve quality of governance and people’s living standard in the country.”

Doctors’ protest continues in Punjab on 29th day

LAHORE: The strike of Punjab’s doctors continues on the 29th consecutive day today (Tuesday) for an increase in salaries.

The Young Doctors Association (YDA) has announced to stage a sit-in protest outside Punjab Assembly today.

Doctors demonstrated outside hospitals and administered treatment to patients in medical camps there.

Routine duty in several teaching hospitals of the province, including those in Lahore, is suspended due to the strike.

The YDA said the strike will continue till their demands are fulfilled. TrendPK

Mismanagement mars entry tests for ASI posts in Lahore

LAHORE: Mismanagement was quite evident in Lahore, where thousands of candidates had to face the scorching heat to sit in entry tests for the vacant posts of assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs).

Written tests were conducted across the province for vacant posts of ASIs in Punjab police.

Some 15, 000 candidates turned to University of Engineering Technology (UET) to appear in the tests for 32 seats of Lahore Division.

Due to mismanagement, the test started late by one and half an hour.

Candidates complained that insufficient arrangements were made for the tests. They said that they had no access to water while a number of candidates had to sit under the scorching sun.

SC adjourns hearing of Balochistan killings till March 2

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned hearing of a petition filed regarding Balochistan’s targeted killings and other crimes till March 2.

A three member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry , heard the case. Home secretary and I.G Balochistan presented report regarding deteriorating situation of law and order in the province.

The chief justice said in his remarks that if the governor, chief minister, I.G and chief secretaries are not safe, then who will be safe!

The court suggested attorney general to meet the prime minister and tell him the real and full story of Balochistan and keep his comments in the record of the court. TrendPK

Politics of reconciliation is not weakness, says PM

RAHIM YAR KHAN: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday said that the politics of reconciliation should not be thought as a weakness.

While his address in Rahim Yar Khan the PM said that Punjab Chief Minister has authority to summon rangers in the province.

He also said that Punjab CM should take steps to curb terrorism, extremism and the incidents of kidnapping for ransom in the province.
