Koran burning plan outraged Eid celebrating Muslims

KABUL: Thousands of rock-pelting Afghans assaulted a NATO military outpost on Friday as fury built across the Muslim world against a US pastor’s threats to immolate the Koran on the anniversary of 9/11.

In a turbulent start to the festival of Eid al-Fitr, when Muslims worldwide mark the end of the Ramadan fasting month, leaders of countries including Afghanistan and Indonesia issued dire warnings against the provocative act.

Radical Florida evangelist Terry Jones issued a heavily conditioned offer to call off his event, which he had planned for Saturday’s ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks in protest at the “evil of Islam”.

“We have heard that in the US, a pastor has decided to insult Korans. Now although we have heard that they are not doing this, we tell them they should not even think of it,” Afghan President Hamid Karzai said.

Washington: US President Barack Obama marked the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Saturday with his administration stressing the commonality between American culture and the values of Islam.

Eid Mubarak,”As Muslims in the United States and around the world complete the month of Ramadan and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, Michelle and I would like to extend our personal greetings on this joyous occasion,” Obama said in a statement.

“Even on this festive occasion, Muslims remember those less fortunate, including those impacted by poverty, hunger, conflict, and disease,” he added.

Obama highlighted Muslims’ commitment to collecting and distributing charity and said his administration was “working to ensure that Muslims are able to fulfil their charitable obligations not just during Ramadan, but throughout the year.”

In her own message, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stressed that Eid celebrations at the White House, pioneered by her husband Bill Clinton in 1996 when he was president, ensured that “all faiths have a home here in the United States”.

“This time of self-reflection reminds us that the values of Islam — charity, community, cooperation, compassion — are values which we hold dear as Americans and which have contributed so much to American culture,” Obama’s top diplomat said.

“We know there is more that unites peoples of faith than divides us. So as Ramadan draws to a close, let us hold on to that spirit of community throughout the year to achieve our common goals of peace, prosperity, and stability.”

Obama, who has Muslim heritage on his father’s side of his family, vowed to forge a “new beginning” for Islam and America in a landmark speech to the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims in Cairo in June.

Senior Saudi Prince Injured In Suicide Attack

367288b098attack Senior Saudi Prince Injured In Suicide AttackRIYADH, Saudi Arabia: A suicide bomber lightly wounded a senior prince largely credited for Saudi Arabia’s anti-terrorism campaign when he blew himself up just before going into a gathering of well-wishers for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the state news agency said Friday.

It was the first known assassination attempt against a member of the royal family since Saudi Arabia began its crackdown on al-Qaida affiliated militants eight years ago following the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States.

The militant who attacked the assistant interior minister, Prince Muhammad bin Nayef, late Thursday at the Ramadan gathering in Jiddah had previously expressed his intention to give himself up to the official, the Saudi Press Agency quoted the royal court as saying.

It is customary for senior members of the royal family to hold regular open gatherings where citizens can air grievances, seek settlement of financial or other disputes or offer congratulations.

Upon hearing news of the attack, King Abdullah swiftly headed to hospital, according to the agency. It said the prince, who is the son of Interior Minister Prince Nayef, was discharged from the hospital and nobody else was seriously injured.

The Interior Ministry has spearheaded the kingdom’s aggressive campaign against terrorism, one that has intensified since militants first struck in the kingdom in May 2003. The country is the birthplace of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and was home to 15 of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers.

On Aug. 19, authorities announced the arrest of 44 suspected militants with al-Qaida links in a yearlong sweep that also uncovered dozens of machine guns and electronic circuits for bombs.

Last month, Saudi officials said a Saudi criminal court had convicted and sentenced 330 al-Qaida militants to jail terms, fines and travel bans in the country’s first known trials for suspected members of the terror group.

The 330 are believed to be among the 991 suspected militants that the interior minister has said have been charged with participating in terrorist attacks over the past five years.

Stop Countering Nuk Drive: Iran

57a45771b3drive Stop Countering Nuk Drive: IranTEHRAN, IRAN: Iran told world powers on Monday they must stop working against its atomic drive and instead adopt a policy of interaction with the Islamic republic to resolve the nuclear crisis.

“It is the right time for the other parties to review their policy. Rather than countering Iran, they should interact with Iran,” foreign ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi told reporters.

World powers and Israel are at loggerheads with Iran over its nuclear programme which they suspect is aimed at making atomic weapons, a charge consistently denied by Tehran.

Ghashghavi also dismissed threats of additional sanctions on Iran if it fails to abide by international demands to halt uranium enrichment, a process which makes fuel for nuclear plants but can also be diverted to make the core of an atomic bomb.

“Past experience has shown that sanctions are futile. Sanctions will not prevent us from pursuing our legal rights,” he said.

US President Barack Obama has given Iran until September to take up an offer by world powers of talks if it freezes uranium enrichment, or face harsher sanctions.

Iran has long insisted that it has a right to nuclear technology as it is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Ghashghavi’s remarks come just days after reports that Iran has allowed inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to check on the nuclear reactor at Arak for the first time in a year.

Arak, with its nearly completed 40-megawatt heavy water reactor, is one of most sensitive nuclear sites in Iran, as it could produce plutonium, which Tehran says would be for medical research.

IAEA director Mohamed ElBaradei has persistently called for his agency’s inspectors to be allowed back into Iran to continue their checks.

ElBaradei will publish his latest report on Iran next week and it will go before the agency’s governors in September.

Israel has accused the IAEA of holding back incriminating evidence of what it says is Iran’s drive to obtain nuclear weapons, according to an Israeli newspaper.

Ramadan Ceasefire Call Rejected By Somali Insurgents

307008ed5frgents Ramadan Ceasefire Call Rejected By Somali InsurgentsMOGADISHU: Somali insurgents on Sunday rejected a government call for a ceasefire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and accused the president of trying to use religion as a cover for re-arming his troops.

President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, a former Islamist rebel, had called for an end to fighting during Ramadan to allow people to pray.

“We will not accept that ceasefire call. This holy month will be a triumphant time for mujahideen and we will fight the enemy,” Hizbul Islam leader Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys told a news conference.

Ahmed’s United Nations-backed government is seen by many analysts as the country’s best hope for a return to stability after 18 years of conflict, but it holds just small pockets of the capital and parts of the south.

Insurgents including the Al Shabaab group, which Washington says is al Qaeda’s proxy in Somalia, have controlled most of the south for months.

A regional commander for al Shabaab questioned the government’s call for a ceasefire and vowed to escalate attacks.

“We will redouble the war against infidels. His call does not mean he has respect for Ramadan, but it is designed to re-arm his pro-Western militia,” said Bare Adan Khoje, Shabaab commander for the South Western Gedo region.

At least 11 people were killed and 22 others wounded on the first day of Ramadan when the insurgents attacked government positions in the capital, the state defence minister said.

“They attacked our positions on Saturday evening and we gave them a lesson. Their bodies are lying on the streets,” Yusuf Mohamed told Reuters.

Ali Nuur, a Mogadishu school teacher said he had been trapped in a mosque by the fighting.

“Seven of the bodies were lying on the streets when I got out of the mosque,” he said.

More than 100 people died last week in different parts of the country as pro-government militias and insurgents engaged in various battles.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said on Sunday that the European Union (EU) should appoint a special envoy for Somalia.

“The EU must not only speak with a single voice… but should study the appointment of a special envoy,” Frattini said speaking in the Italian seaside resort of Rimini.

ca086d3c89amadan US President Obama’s Message For Muslims For RamadanWASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has issued a special Ramadan message to the Muslim World, expressing hope for a more peaceful and secure world.

In a video message to Muslims, Obama said the US was committed to keeping its pledge to build a safer world, end the Iraq war and isolate violent extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“All of these efforts are part of America’s commitment to engage Muslims and Muslim-majority nations on the basis of mutual interest and mutual respect,” Obama said in the message posted on the White House website.

“And at this time of renewal, I want to reiterate my commitment to a new beginning between America and Muslims around the world.”

“We are also committed to keeping our responsibility to build a world that is more peaceful and secure,” he said.

Obama also mentioned the common Muslim-Christian principals and rituals, saying that people of the both faiths are in search of “advancing justice, progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.”

He said that the US would help recognize the rights of Israelis and Palestinians for them to live in peace and security.

Since taking his oath of office in January, Obama has tried to reconcile US relations with the Muslim World, which were soured after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 20003.

The US President visited Turkey and Egypt, telling both Muslim audiences that “America is not – and never will be – at war with Islam.”

Ramadan, the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, is a time for Muslims to fast from dawn to sunset and focus on their faith, self-accountability and self-restraint.

Muslims believe it was in this month that the first verse of the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH).

TEHRAN: Iran has banned pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia during the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan to prevent the spread of swine flu.3601b5f9b0ne flu Iran’s Pilgrims Banned To Saudi Arabia Over Swine Flu

Health Minister Kamaran Baghri Lankarani says the measure has been imposed because of possible outbreaks of the disease among pilgrims.

State radio quoted Lankarani as saying Thursday that the high number of pilgrims who come to Saudi Arabia during Ramadan increases the risk of infection.

Iran has registered 145 cases of swine flu, many of them linked to travels to the kingdom. The first case was a 16-year-old Iranian boy who came from the United States with his parents in late June.

About half a million of Iranians travel to Saudi Arabia on pilgrimages every year.

This year, Ramadan starts in late August.
