Greece’s debt slashed to junk status
S&P ratings agency cut Greece sovereign credit rating to junk status Tuesday, and said it would cut it further if the government’s ability to implement fiscal reforms weakens.
In its downgrade of Portugal, Standard & Poor’s cited concerns about its ability to deal with high debt levels given the country’s weak economic outlook. It cut the rating by two notches to A-minus, or four notches above speculative, or “junk” status.
Investors had already bracing for the next weak link in the euro zone, targeting Portugal, Ireland and Spain, as Germany continued to hold out for strict conditions on the aid package offered to Greece by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
“If (Germany) were moving faster, it’s arguable the risk of contagion would be less. However, at this point in time, the markets smell blood,” said Charles Diebel, head of European interest rates strategy at Nomura.
European shares fell the most in more than two months on Tuesday, weighed by debt downgrades on Greece and Portugal from rating agency Standard & Poor’s.
The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index of top shares fell 2.6% to close provisionally at 1,073.84 points, the biggest one-day percentage fall since Feb. 4, and after two straight sessions of gains.
Banking stocks were the biggest fallers. BNP Paribas, Banco Santander, BBVA, HSBC, Societe Generale and UBS fell between 2.4 and 6.1%.

In the Florida program, you just need to request a priority number, which you can do at rebates.com/florida. You may want to discuss instant loans if you need to finance an appliance to receive the rebate.
Energy Star appliance ratings qualify for rebates.com/florida program
The Florida appliance rebate 2010 is based on the Energy Star government rating system. Energy Star has recently encountered questions about how their rating system works. Even so, usually new appliances are much more energy-efficient than old appliances. Be sure to do your own research about the Energy Star appliance you plan to purchase before you apply on rebates.com/florida.

The 31-year-old Goldman Sachs vice president charged with securities fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission today is Fabrice Tourre, a French graduate of Stanford who has worked at the Wall Street firm since July 2001.
In an email to a friend on January 23, 2007, the London-based trader called himself “The Fabulous Fab” and warned about the coming collapse in the subprime mortgage securities market, according to the SEC complaint. In the message, he also dramatically expresses his own lack of foresight about the consequences of his risky trading activity:
“More and more leverage in the system. The whole building is about to collapse anytime now… Only potential survivor, the fabulous Fab[rice Tourre]… standing in the middle of all these complex, highly leveraged exotic trades he created without necessarily understanding all of the implications of those monstrosities!!!”
Last December, the New York Times reported on Fourre’s role in helping create Abacus deals, which allowed investors to bet for or against mortgage securities through credit default swaps:
Mr. Egol and Fabrice Tourre, a French trader at Goldman, were aggressive from the start in trying to make the assets in Abacus deals look better than they were, according to notes taken by a Wall Street investor during a phone call with Mr. Tourre and another Goldman employee in May 2005.
On the call, the two traders noted that they were trying to persuade analysts at Moody’s Investors Service, a credit rating agency, to assign a higher rating to one part of an Abacus C.D.O. but were having trouble, according to the investor’s notes, which were provided by a colleague who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to release them. Goldman declined to discuss the selection of the assets in the C.D.O.’s, but a spokesman said investors could have rejected the C.D.O. if they did not like the assets…
“Egol and Fabrice were way ahead of their time,” said one of the former Goldman workers. “They saw the writing on the wall in this market as early as 2005.” By creating the Abacus C.D.O.’s, they helped protect Goldman against losses that others would suffer.
Movie Review 3 Idiots

Movie Review 3 Idiots: 3 Idiots; Star cast: Aamir Khan as Ryan, Kareena Kapoor as Neha Kurien, Sharman Joshi as Alok, Madhavan as Hari and Boman Irani as Professor Kurien; Director: Rajkumar Hirani; Rating:
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani the flick opens with Farhan(R. Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) beginning a journey in search of their lost friend Ranchoddas Shaymaldas Chajaad (Aamir Khan) who leaves college all of sudden.
The movie proceeds through narrations that take you into the flashback when Rancho, Farhan and Raju arrive at a premier engineering institute to begin their course.
The three are roommates and go about their life at college in a lively way occasionally Raju and Farhan being worried about Rancho’s antiques.
The so called “villain” of the flick whose ways are against that of Rancho is the Dean of the college Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani). In addition, to make matters worse Rancho happens to find love in his daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor).
The movie has some really hilarious moments with wedding reception mayhem of Viru’s oldest daughter played by Mona Singh, Raju’s father being reached to the hospital in a very funny way on a two-wheeler and so on.
The first half keeps you at wits end. But, enter second half and you are no longer given the same experience of the first half. The end stretches a bit too long and some things are just too away from spontaneity.
The music is light and entertaining. On the whole a decent flick. Only time will tell if it joins the ranks of Aamir Khan’s other blockbuster movies.
3 Idiots works and how! With a good grip on emotions and entertainment, 3 Idiots is the biggest hit of 2009 for sure. Take it from us.
Dubai Firms’ Ratings Cut to Junk by Standard & Poor’s
Dubai Firms’ Ratings Cut to Junk by Standard & Poor’s, The ratings agency Standard & Poor’s has cut the credit rating of six Dubai companies linked to the government to junk status. S&P said extraordinary support from the Dubai government seemed “low” after the emirate said it would not guarantee Dubai World’s debts. Last week, state-owned Dubai World rocked financial markets after asking for a delay on repaying its debt. S&P said it was not rating Dubai World or its property arm Nakheel. It said that under its criteria, a credit standstill – which is what Dubai World had asked for – “is considered a default”. The firms downgraded were the ports operator DP World, DIFC Investments, Jebel Ali Free Zone, Dubai Multi Commodities Centre Authority, Dubai Holding Commercial Operations Group and Emaar Properties PJSC. In addition, the rating on four banks was cut to junk. They were Emirates Bank International, National Bank of Dubai, Mashreqbank and Dubai Islamic Bank. S&P said this was because of their high exposure to government-related entities (GREs).

The Girl With The Short Hair

The best part is that you figure out fun ways to do your hair, it’s just easier to take of! Best part? If you can work the curling iron and get a bunch of curls, it’s completely adorable. It definitely becomes a deciding factor on how you style your outfits. What are your thoughts on girls with short hair? As for my next hair cut? I’m definitely going to go for a Shannyn Sossamon look.

Ctrl BG: A Shortcut to Financial News 12/21
After MUCH drama, the fall of the auto industry in the US has finally been avoided- at least temporarily anyway. In the end, Bush signed over $17.4 to Chrysler and GM on Friday in return for non voting warrants and more oversight on executive pay etc. In the end, they made a full circle and the money will be coming from the TARP fund, which brings up the really intriguing question of whether the government has opened the pandora box and now other industries will be lining up to get a share of the rest of the TARP fund. Paulson has already asked Congress to release the rest of the $350 billion TARP fund early, when just a few days ago he said that it will not be necessary. Just when we thought we figured out how the TARP is going to work, they change their minds. This does not bode well for the government, because it makes them look like they have no idea what they’re doing. Maybe they don’t! On the other hand, the wider purpose of TARP is to support the financial market stability, and I daresay, it will probably not be very stable if the auto industry went bankrupt!
On the sidelines, the Madoff scandal continues to unfold, revealing many influential individuals exposed to this fraud. The S&P cut the rating of 11 US and EU banks, including Bank of America, Barclays Bank, Citibank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase Bank, Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Scotland, UBS and Wells Fargo Bank. I guess if ratings must be cut, at least there is safety in numbers. What are you going to do when everyone goes down?
Outside of the States, it looks like the land of chocolate and waffles is not doing very well. Belgium’s attempt to bailout Fortis got frozen as Prime Minister Yves Leterme tendered his resignation after having reportedly politically meddling to sway a court ruling. Apparently this is the third time their government collapsed. I had no idea.

The face on the milk carton

The face on the milk carton, Janie is living a pretty perfect life until one day at lunch she sees a missing person on a milk carton and the little girl looks strangely familiar… it is her. She is 3 years old in the picture and realizes that she has never seen any of her baby pictures… she then has never seen her birth certificate. Her neighbors say that she moved in when she was 5 and she hasn’t seen any pictures of when she was younger than five. Could her parents really have kidnapped her?!
Excellent concept, not-so-excellent execution. The plot idea is absolutely thrilling – suddenly realising that your parents are actually not your parents, but that you’ve been kidnapped, not knowing how to react, who to turn to or who to trust.
Unfortunately Caroline Cooney’s didn’t quite have the skills to pull it off, and therefore the writing seemed occasionally choppy and the emotions unrealistic.
Still, the story itself was really interesting, so I definitely want to read the rest of the series.
