‘Laker Girl’ Jeanie’s book details life secrets

LOS ANGELES: Anybody who has ever worked for a family business knows it is hard to juggle the competing issues of work life versus family life.
But when your family business is as high profile as professional basketball’s Los Angeles Lakers — one of the winningest championship teams of all time — the job can be even more challenging. Add in that you are dating the team’s coach, and it gets even more complicated.
Welcome to the world of Jeanie Buss and her memoir “Laker Girl,” which is currently in bookstores.
Buss is executive vice president of business operations for the Lakers, one of the world’s best known sports franchises. She is the daughter of team owner, Dr. Jerry Buss, and sister to executive vice president of player personnel, Jim Buss. As important, she is the girlfriend of coach Phil Jackson.
She calls juggling her personal and her business life one of the most challenging issues she faces, day-to-day.
“My dad is very clear about family time being family time and not letting business encroach on that. And if there is a serious business issue, we make an appointment, sit down and have a meeting and keep it separate,” Buss told Reuters.
“Anybody who’s in a family business will agree that it’s really hard to keep boundaries, yet it’s really important to keep the sanity of the family,” she said.
Buss is, perhaps, the biggest Laker booster of them all, and it comes across in “Laker Girl.” Readers gain insight into the team during its championship season of 2009-2010, as well as into Buss’s life with Jackson and her career in business.
During the last season, Buss wrote in a daily journal and her thoughts on the team’s ups-and-downs over roughly eight months provide a timeline for “Laker Girl.”
She said that one question she is often asked is what it’s like to be a woman working in such a storied sports franchise, and by writing in journal form she could “share in real time, the highs and the lows” of working for the team.
Interspersed between the journal entries are chapters on her father’s start in southern California real estate, in which he amassed the fortune he used to purchase the Lakers in 1979.
Buss also shares her own work experiences with readers, starting out as a 19 year-old promoter of World Team Tennis matches in the late 1970s and moving on to her work with the Lakers, helping market the team and sell merchandise associated with it and its players, including Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.
When asked what the Laker brand stands for, she is quick to reply. “In one word, I would say winning.
“My dad…he’s an American story. He is a self-made man who used education to pull himself out of a poor childhood,” Buss said. “He built an empire, but all the time being a fan. For him, he runs the team as a family and its fans like to win.”
“Laker Girl” offers readers some basic business tips as Buss relates experiences about being a highly-placed executive in a male-dominated business.
“You’ve got to stay true to yourself,” Buss said. “You have to have discipline and know your stuff and if people try to dismiss you, that’s their loss.
“Know what you’re good at, what your talents are, and hone those skills. That is what will help you succeed,” she said.
And, of course, she addresses the inevitable: whether Jackson will ever pop the marriage question.
Hint: the final answer is on the last page.

Asian stocks rise on US data, eyes on earnings
HONG KONG: Asian stocks pulled back slightly from two-and-a-half month highs hit earlier on Tuesday after upbeat U.S. housing data, while the euro neared 2-month peaks on relief over stress tests on European banks.
Financial markets are awaiting a slew of data from the United States, including consumer confidence later in the day and second-quarter Q2 gross domestic product, as well as a host of quarterly corporate earnings.
European markets are seen opening largely steady after Deutsche Bank”s in-line earnings and UBS”s street-beating performance in the second quarter.
The euro was just above a key resistance of 1.30 with sentiment buoyed after the stress tests. Analysts are now eyeing a 2-month high of $1.3029 hit last week as the next test.
High-yielding currencies like the Australian and New Zealand dollars held near recent highs and the dollar stabilised after retreating against the yen on Monday. The pound rose to a 5-month high of $1.5530 as risk appetite improved.
The MSCI index of Asia Pacific ex-Japan stocks was up 0.5 percent, led by gains in the technology and consumer durables sectors.
The index, which hit its highest level since mid-May earlier in the session, is down just 2 percent in the year to date, and could return to the black this week although earnings from Asian corporate heavyweights hold the key to further gains.
“What we are going to get is good earnings numbers and negative forward looking statements for Q3 and especially Q4. Things are not looking so good,” said Erwin Sanft, head of China and Hong Kong Research at BNP Paribas Asia.
Japan”s benchmark Nikkei ended down 0.1 percent after failing to break above a key resistance level, with support from robust earnings in Japan countered by persistent worries about a strong yen.
The yen was steady around 86.95 yen to a dollar, after rising from Monday”s 87.71.
Overnight, Wall Street finished higher after new home sales in June logged a surprising jump and package delivery and business services company FedEx Corp”s, an economic bellwether, upgraded its quarterly and full-year earnings forecasts.
Asian corporate reporting season enters its busy phase this week amid expectations of robust results for the April-June reporting period, though the picture in the months ahead is uncertain.
Japanese camera and office equipment maker Canon Inc and South Korea”s Samsung SDI Co Ltd, the world”s No.2 rechargeable battery maker, both posted strong earnings but the outlook is less than upbeat.
Bucking the overall trend, Shanghai”s composite, already the worst performer in Asia this year, edged down 0.4 percent after a report the city”s banks are facing rising default risks on loans to real estate developers.
The mood was already jittery after a report the previous day that almost a quarter of China”s local government debt is at risk of defaulting.
Shanghai”s index is down more than 21 percent in the year to date despite a six-session rising streak which has taken it to month highs.
The Aussie was trading at $0.9015 close to an 11-week peak and the kiwi hovered at $0.7339, not far from a six-month high.

The real estate listing for the house that went on the market Monday at 108 Ocean Ave. refers to it as a “legendary home,” but most people would know the sideways Dutch Colonial on the canal as the so-called Amityville Horror house.
Listed for $1.15 million, the picturesque and pristine home looks very different from the home where Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six family members as they slept in 1974. The 28 supposedly haunted days in the house experienced by subsequent owners George and Kathleen Lutz spawned the 1977 bestselling Jay Anson book “The Amityville Horror: A True Story” and a series of scary movies about alleged supernatural happenings at the house starting in 1979.
Even the address is different. Previous owners James and Barbara Cromarty, who own the Riverhead Raceway, said they had it changed from 112 Ocean Ave. to protect their privacy.
James Cromarty, 77, bought the house in 1977. By that point, a bank had foreclosed on the house from the Lutzes, who have since died. DeFeo is at the upstate Green Haven Correctional Facility, serving 25 years to life for the murders.
In November 1974 Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot six members of his family dead as they slept in their beds. Both DeFeo’s parents, two sisters and two brothers were killed using a .35 caliber rifle, all the victims were found lying on their stomachs in bed and not one of them appeared to have been woken by the gunfire as DeFeo walked from room to room killing his relatives. DeFeo was found guilty of all six murders and is incarcerated at the Green Haven Correctional Facility in New York.
In December 1975 George and Kathy Lutz moved into 112 Ocean Avenue along with their three children. The Lutzes spent a total of 28 days at the house before fleeing the property claiming they had been terrorised by paranormal phenomena and forced out. The Lutzes experiences were used as a basis for Jay Anson’s novel The Amityville Horror, which was published in 1977 and made into a film in 1979.

She was the Miss USA contestant last year who was attacked first for her views on gay marriage and then again weeks later for a series of sexy photos that were deemed so racy, they almost cost the reigning Miss California her crown.
Well, times sure have changed at Miss USA under the tutelage of its owner, real estate tycoon and media personality Donald Trump.
Last week, the 51 Miss USA hopefuls convened in Las Vegas and shot their official contestant photos with photographer Fadil Berisha.
The look?
Lacy lingerie, fishnets, smudged black eyeliner, knee-high boots, ample cleavage and plenty of bare skin, all while positioned in seductive poses on a large bed.

SNEAK PEEK: The 51 New Pageants Photos: Are They Too Much?
Miss Virginia and Miss Kansas are even braless, donning only open shirts and panties.
For some Miss USA hopefuls, participating in such a sexy shoot caused quite a bit of apprehension. Paula Miles, the state director for South Carolina, North Carolina and Louisiana, told Pop Tarts she received a distressing call from two of her pageant contestants just prior to having had their pictures taken.
“They happened to have gone up in the room and they saw what was taking place, and they called concerned, and my best advice to them was just to not compromise yourself,” Miles told Pop Tarts. “They made sure their breasts were covered and that they weren’t in provocative attire. They knew that their family was going to see these. They were concerned, knowing that they had to participate in order to be competitive.”
Miles said the theme of the Miss USA shoot went against how she ran her state pageants.
“We’re from the South, we have a business, and we have to be broad-based and have an open mind, but we run our business as a wholesome, family, basic experience,” she explained. “Once it gets to the national level, it takes on a different feel.”
VOTE: Do the New Miss USA Photos Go Too Far?
Miles did add that the final photographs were better than she expected, and for the most part artistic and beautiful. California’s state director, Keith Lewis, who was involved in a lawsuit with Prejean after she was stripped of her Miss California crown, had no problem with them at all.
It seems some folks are getting their panties in a twist over a bunch of photos showing this year’s Miss USA contestants wearing not much more than…their bra and panties.
Take Rima Fakih, aka Miss Michigan. She, like all the ladies who will be strutting their stuff during the May 16 pageant in Las Vegas, posed provocatively for her promo pics.

Tiger Woods and his wife Elin will share joint custody of their children in a divorce,
The Number One golfer hurt his back and pulled out of his latest tournament Sunday, while beautiful Elin spent the afternoon without him, with their children, for Mother’s Day.
PHOTOS: Tiger & Elin In Barbados Before Their Wedding
In the past month, they have spent only a few days together and both have seen divorce lawyers.
And one source familiar with the situation tells RadarOnline.com that the couple will share joint custody of the children if the divorce goes through

Tiger Woods hurt his back and pulled out of his latest tournament Sunday, while his former model wife, Elin Woods, spent the afternoon without him, and with their children, for Mother’s Day. Now come reports that the No. 1 golfer and his estranged wife will divorce and share joint custody of the kids.
It’s one of the few bright spots in Tiger’s relationship with Elin. They still do not live together, with Elin staying in a rented house about a mile from the home they once shared near Orlando, Florida.
At one point the relationship warmed, but Tiger’s return to golf upset Elin, the source said. She felt he returned too soon and wasn’t committed to building a new relationship with her.

Fannie Mae Needs $8.4 Billion More in Aid after First-Quarter Loss
Read more: Fannie Mae loss shrinks to $13.1B, needs billions more in aid – Washington Business Journal: Fannie Mae has again asked taxpayers for more money after reporting a first-quarter loss of more than $13 billion.
The mortgage finance company, which was rescued by the government in September 2008, said it needs an additional $8.4 billion from the government to help cover mounting losses.
Fannie Mae says it lost $13.1 billion, or $2.29 per share, in the January-March period. That takes into account $1.5 billion in dividends paid to the Treasury Department. It compares with a loss of $23.2 billion, or $4.09 a share, in the year-ago period.
The rescue of Fannie Mae and sister company Freddie Mac is turning out to be one of the most expensive aftereffects of the financial meltdown. The new request for aid will bring Fannie Mae’s total to $83.6 billion. The total bill for the duo will now be nearly $145 billion.

Late last year, the Obama administration pledged to cover unlimited losses through 2012 for Freddie and Fannie, lifting an earlier cap of $400 billion.
Fannie and Freddie play a vital role in the mortgage market by purchasing mortgages from lenders and selling them to investors. Together the pair own or guarantee almost 31 million home loans worth about $5.5 trillion. That’s about half of all mortgages.
The two companies, however, loosened their lending standards for borrowers during the real estate boom and are reeling from the consequences.
Fannie Mae said that the first-quarter loss resulted in a net worth deficit of $8.4 billion as of March 31, and that the Federal Housing Finance Agency had asked the Treasury Department to provide $8.4 billion on or prior to June 30 to restore its net worth.
The latest infusion will raise Fannie’s total bailout from the Treasury to $84.6 billion.
