Scotland Yard levels no charge on players: HC
LONDON: Pakistan High Commission in London said Tuesday Scotland Yard Police merely carried out investigation with Pakistani players alleged of cricket betting scam but however, they have so far leveled no charges upon them, Geo News reported.
In a statement issued from Pakistan HC in UK, shelving the impression that cricket team has been asked to abandon ongoing visit, said: “Neither any action is in progress against alleged players nor have they been asked to come back home.”
There is no truthfulness in news pertaining to leaving out any player from squad neither the tour is going to be called off, the statement went on saying so.
The statement said that no FIA team is flying to London to probe into betting allegations against seven players as the matter is currently in hands of Scotland Yard Police for investigation.
Statement also clarified that those arrested including a woman were accused of money laundering on contrary to fixing matches, leaving the matter entirely unlinked with betting scam.
Scolding news media over their conduct in connection with betting allegations, the statement warned newsmen against exaggerating the matter, saying no evidences have proven positive against players as yet.
PCB says no suspensions over betting probe
TAUNTON: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Tuesday it would not suspend players embroiled in betting scam allegations while the claims are investigated, though they are set to miss the next match.
Meanwhile British authorities revealed they had made three arrests on money laundering grounds, which sources confirmed were linked to the cricket scandal.
Though the PCB has said it will not suspend the players, they are travelling to London on Wednesday ahead of a meeting with officials, which will effectively rule them out of contention for Pakistan”s next match, against county side Somerset in Taunton on Thursday.
A PCB spokesman told media: “Chairman Ijaz Butt just told me that since there is a case going on with the Scotland Yard we are not going to suspend any player.
“He further said that this is only an allegation so far. There is still no charge or proof on that account. So at this stage there will be no action taken.”
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has promised “prompt and decisive action” if the “spot-fixing” allegations made by a British newspaper are proven.
Customs officials in Britain said they had arrested and bailed two men and a woman from London on Sunday as part of an investigation into money laundering. A source confirmed the arrests were linked to the cricket scandal.
They were a man and a woman, both 35, from Croydon in south London and a 49-year-old man from Wembley in northwest London.
“These individuals were arrested, questioned and have been bailed pending further investigation,” Her Majesty”s Revenue and Customs said in a statement.
The News of the World tabloid alleges that Mazhar Majeed, a 35-year-old Croydon-based agent for several Pakistan players, took 150,000 pounds (185,000 euros, 230,000 dollars) to arrange for deliberate no-balls to be bowled at precise points in the final Test match against England in London last week.
The information would be of enormous value to the spot-betting industry, where money is wagered on specific incidents in matches.
The beleaguered Pakistan team was training for the rest of the tour in Taunton, southwest England.
But three of the players named in the allegations — Test team captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif — have been summoned to a meeting with top Pakistani officials in London.
Team manager Yawar Saeed said they would meet with Ijaz Butt and Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Pakistan”s high commissioner (ambassador) to Britain.
It appears increasingly likely the three players will play no part in the rest of the tour, which comprises two Twenty20 matches and a five-match one-day international series against England.
A UK newspaper said the ICC had informally asked Pakistan for the named players to be dropped from the squad.
Citing ICC sources, other reports claimed that the same players had been under investigation for months by their anti-corruption unit.
Pakistan held a training session Tuesday at the County Ground in Taunton, but reporters were barred on the request of the Pakistan team.
Somerset Chief Executive Richard Gould told media: “I think in these particular circumstances, we understand.”
The world of cricket has reacted with shock and dismay to claims that huge sums of money had changed hands in alleged fixing schemes at international level, linked to shadowy betting rings.
The News of the World claimed it had paid middleman Majeed for advance details of three no-balls in the Test match at Lord”s.
Majeed was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers in the wake of the allegations, but was released on bail without charge on Sunday.
Detectives interviewed Test captain Butt, plus bowlers Asif and 18-year-old prodigy Aamer, who delivered the no-balls — normally an accidental and unpredictable occurrence — and police seized their mobile phones.
Investigators from the ICC”s anti-corruption and security unit are in Britain looking into the allegations.
Agent Umran Khan, who represents several Pakistan players not named in the allegations, including one-day captain Shahid Afridi, repeated this, telling PakPassion.net: “My players have absolutely nothing to do with it.”
Salman Butt to lead Pakistan
LONDON: Opnening batsman Salman Butt has been selected as Captain for the rest of the England series, while wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal will be his vice captain, Geo News reported.
This was decided in a meeting chaired by PCB boss Ejaz Butt here today.
Captain Shahid Afridi in a surprisingly announcement said he will retire from Test cricket after the second neutral Test against Australia in Leeds.
dancing with the stars elimination april 20

There was a feeling of inevitability in the air on this “Dancing With the Stars” results show, but was it right?
The show kicks off with hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke bringing Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough and Kate Gosselin and Tony Dovolani from the steps to centerstage. Nicole and Derek are safe but Kate and Tony are the first to feel the burn of the Red Light of DOOOOOOOOM.
Next Len goes through the recap of last night, reiterating his dislike of Pamela Anderson and Damian Whitewood’s “9 to 5″ Jive. For some inexplicable reason Jake Pavelka and Chelsie Hightower got the encore nod tonight. Len blamed it on Bruno wanting to see the tidy-whities again.
After a commercial break, Maxwell sings his hit “Fistful of Tears” from the album “black summer’s night.” I’m not sure who the pro dancers are but that’s one acrobatic and athletic couple. Very impressive. Tom said their names but I couldn’t really hear them. And Maxwell was…well, Maxwell. Good times.
Next, Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke and Niecy Nash and Louis Van Amstel are brought to the stage. Tom and Brooke reveal that Chad and Cheryl are in jeopardy (but no red light) while Niecy and Louis are safe. Yay Niecy!
darnell mcdonald

It had been six years since Darnell McDonald set foot in Fenway Park [map]. Suffice it to say, he never had seen the old place look like this. A former first-round draft pick turned journeyman outfielder, McDonald arrived about one hour before last night’s game, having been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket. He belted a pinch-hit homer to tie the game in the eighth inning, then swatted a walkoff single off The Wall with the bases loaded in the ninth to score Kevin Youkilis [stats] from third and snap the Red Sox [team stats]’ five-game losing streak with a 7-6 comeback victory against the Texas Rangers. “I couldn’t write a script any better,” McDonald said after sending a crowd of 37,614 into a frenzy and being swarmed by his teammates (and tackled by Youkilis) at second base. “A dream come true.”
Rochester, N.Y., outfielder Darnell McDonald was told to fly to Boston and await word on whether he’d be called up. The phone rang in time for him to hastily arrive at Fenway, and without taking batting practice, he became the first player to hit a pinch-hit home run in his first Red Sox at-bat since Curtis Pride in 1997. But he wasn’t finished, winning the game with a bases-loaded single in the ninth. So, where did he stay while he was on call? “It’s a secret spot,” he said with a smile. “There’s some vending machines. You’ve got to pay for it. I kept my receipts.” After last night, the Red Sox surely will pay him back.

After almost two and a half years of sobering news, the head of JPMorgan Chase raised his outlook for the rest of 2010 as first-quarter income rose 55 percent. Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan’s chairman and chief executive, said that there were strong signs the economy was stabilizing as fewer borrowers fall behind on their loans.
“While the economy still faces challenges, there have been clear and broad-based improvements in underlying trends,” he said in a statement. “We believe these improvements will continue and are hopeful they will gather momentum.”
Mr. Dimon’s upbeat remarks come as the bank had another strong showing as a sharp reduction in loan loss reserves helped raise earnings. Hefty trading profits in the investment bank once again helped offset the weaker performance of its Chase retail banking and credit card units.
Over all, JPMorgan said its first-quarter income was $3.3 billion, or 74 cents a share. That compared with income of $2.1 billion, or 40 cents a share, a year earlier as profit surged in the months after following the crisis. Revenue, at $28.2 billion, exceeded forecasts. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had forecast income of 64 cents a share on revenue of $26.46 billion. As one of the first banks to report this quarter, JPMorgan’s results could set a benchmark for the rest of the financial industry. Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Citigroup all report in the coming week. Investors will be looking for signs that fewer borrowers are defaulting on their loans — and that the underlying business is improving.
“We continued to see delinquencies stabilize, and in some cases improve, in our credit portfolios,” Mr. Dimon said. Of course, Mr. Dimon noted, the bank’s portfolio will track the health of the broader economy.
Even as the country emerges from a deep recession, the job market has not yet rebounded. Demand for new loans is still weak. Meanwhile, there are only tentative signs that home prices are nearing a bottom.
