Visa lottery dashes hopes of thousands

The U.S. State Department mistakenly told more than 22,000 people that they had won a special U.S. visa lottery and the drawing would have to be redone.
Because of a computer programming error, 90 percent of the winners were selected from the first two days of applications rather than from the entire 30-day registration period. The problem had been fixed and the results of the new drawing from among the same 19.6 million people who applied were expected to be available around July 15. The news dashes the hopes of those who believed they were eligible for the next step in obtaining one of the coveted “green card” lottery visas.
The lottery gives the winners the opportunity to immigrate without having a family member or an employer sponsor them.
Alaska Senate Race Results
Alaska Senate Race Results: We’re bringing you news of the Midterm Election 2010 results from across America and if you want to see full results for each state so far see our previous article here for a simple and clear summary. We’ve also told how Proposition 19 has been defeated in California, and the results of the California election 2010.
However it’s time to turn our attention to what’s going on in the highly-divisive Alaska Senate Race which is neck and neck right now. Indeed it’s so close that it may be some weeks before an official result is known. Huma Khan and Leezel Tanglao over on ABC News report that projections show a Republican winner from write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski or Joe Miller the Tea Party candidate. Democrat Scott McAdams looks likely to finish in third place.
This story is likely to run and run as write-ins account for around 41% of the vote with Miller currently on 34% and McAdams 24%. The feud in the Republican Party means that if Murkowski wins it will be the first time since 1954 that a write-in candidate has won a Senate seat according to John Blackstone over on CBSNews.
However Joe Miller is a Tea Party favorite, backed by Sarah Palin but there’s always a chance if the vote is split that McAdams could take the victory instead. It’s certainly one to watch. What are your thoughts on the Alaska Senate race? We’d be interested to hear from you so please send us your comments.

BERLIN: Paul the octopus, who shot to fame predicting the results of World Cup football matches in South Africa, has passed away.
He is said to have died peacefully in his tank at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany.
The eight-armed Octopus correctly predicted the winners of all Germany’s World Cup clashes, and then the final.
He did it by selecting one of two boxes, each loaded with a mussel food treat and marked on the outside with one of the teams.
Sea life centre manager Stefan Porwoll said: “His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself.”
Staff said there was nothing fishy about Paul’s death as common octopuses generally only live a couple of years.
“He appears to have passed away peacefully during the night of natural causes,” said Mr Porwoll.
He added: “We are consoled by the knowledge

KABUL: Afghanistan’s election body has ordered a partial recount of votes from seven of the country’s 34 provinces on suspicion of fraud, potentially delaying the results of a parliamentary poll further, an official said on Monday.
The Independent Election Commission (IEC) may also push for the recount of ballots in other provinces after the Sept. 18 ballot, which was hit by widespread allegations of fraud.
“We have obtained evidences which show that the results were suspicious and ordered a recount,” Zekriya Barakzai, a commissioner for the government-appointed IEC, told Reuters.
Barakzai said the commission had also declared invalid all votes cast in five polling stations in eastern Khost province.
The election passed off relatively smoothly despite a Taliban threat to disrupt the poll, although hundreds of polling centres were unable to open
