Railway employees go on strike

Striking staff stopped nine trains at Rohri and other suburban stations. The administration managed to send one train through the retired employees.

Two other persons were also injured in the incident. The loco running staff went on strike in protest against the incident.

Karachi Night Coach, Allama Iqbal Express, Sukker Express and Jafar Express were stopped. SP Railway has refused to register a case against divisional and assistant engineer for the death of the girl.

Addressing a public meeting here on Saturday, the retired general said the Lal Masjid people had created a state within a state and that he had tried to bring the administration of the mosque to mend their ways but in vain.

He said All Pakistan Muslim League will soon be dominating all others.

Pervez Musharraf appealed to the people present there to strengthen his party by joining it. He said he will serve the nation with all honesty.

LONDON: Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf vowed Friday to return to politics as he launched a new party in London, where he has spent the past two years in self-imposed exile.

At a packed press conference which at times resembled a rally, the retired general unveiled the All Pakistan Muslim League to contest the next elections in 2013 as a civilian — although he promised to return home before then.

“The time has come to make Pakistan into a progressive, modern Islamic state,” Musharraf said, cheered on by dozens of supporters.

He promised a “party of national salvation” to replace the country’s current leaders who “do not show any signs of light in the darkness that prevails in Pakistan”.

“I think I can give that light,” he said.

Gilani to get final list of NRO officials soon

ISLAMABAD: The Establishment Division is likely to submit the final list of NRO benefiting government functionaries to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in a day or two, sources told SAMAA Saturday.

Speaking at the floor of Upper House on Friday, Prime Minister Gilani confirmed that he received a list of NRO beneficiaries and forwarded it to the Establishment Division for scrutiny.

Sources privy to the Establishment Division told SAMAA that the final list would be submitted to the Prime Minister in a day or two.

According to sources, several officials who benefited from the ill-fated NRO had either retired or died. SAMAA

Musharraf to launch political party

HONG KONG: Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf said on Wednesday he would launch a new party on October 1, as the retired general plots a return to the frontlines of the restive country’s turbulent politics.

Musharraf also accused Afghan President Hamid Karzai of lacking “legitimacy” but urged the West to stay the course against the Taliban and not to abandon the restive region.

“I’m going to a declare a party on October 1. We have to bring about a new political culture in Pakistan,” he told reporters in Hong Kong after addressing an annual investors’ forum organised by the CLSA brokerage.

No compensation for flood-hit Swat, anger rises at govt

KANJU: Babou Zay has witnessed Pakistan’s wars, military coups, assassinations, political upheaval and notorious state corruption cases.

Few events have made the retired farmer, who says he is 100 years old, more mistrustful of his leaders than floods which have ravaged Pakistan and raised questions about the stability of the government because of its slow response.

“I heard on the radio that the government would give 200,000 rupees to each family. We received nothing. All this aid money we hear about. The government stole it,” said Zay, who has a long white beard and missing teeth, as he stared at the Swat River, which ruined his home and hundreds of others nearby.

Anger has been rising over the government’s handling of the catastrophe and it’s likely to get worse as flood victims demand compensation for destroyed houses, crops and livestock.

No LB polls in current year: Thahim

KARACHI: Federal Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Abdul Razzaq Thahim said Local Bodies (LB) elections would not be organized in current year.

Talking to media in Sindh Secretariat, Thahim said Election Commission will hold local bodies elections in accordance with 18th amendment, however, Election Commission is yet to be structured. He said four retired judges should be appointed with chief Election Commissioner to complete Election Commission structure, he added.
