The government will file a review petition today against the decision of the Supreme Court to deny more time to the government in NRO review case. The Supreme Court has returned the NAB report with objections which was submitted in NRO Implementation Case; however, the petition has again been filed after removing objections.
It is maintained in the government petition that it was a wrong perception that the government was using delaying tactics and denying time for change of lawyer would be equal to depriving of the right of review. It is also maintained in the petition that it was not an ordinary thing to issue notification about Kamal Azfar on a holiday and appointment of Kamal as an advisor and replacement of lawyer were solid reason for asking more time from the court. The Court had ordered to take back notification of Kamal Azfar and denied more time to the government in NRO review case.

b9d18e6db3erdict Naheed Wants Review Petition on NRO VerdictISLAMABAD, Pakistan News: Naheed Khan, who was political secretary to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, said Monday that the government should file a review petition after a detailed judgement of the Supreme Court on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) is announced.

Talking to media she also said she was of the view that the NRO should have been defended in the court.

‘Personally I think the government should have defended the NRO in the court by highlighting its spirit.’

Naheed said for smooth transition to democracy through free and fair elections, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had presented two points before Pervez Musharraf; either to remove the bar on a third term for the prime ministry or withdrawal of all cases which had not been decided despite a lapse of 12 years.

She said it was the PML-Q government, which chose the option of withdrawal of cases to pave the way for transition to democracy.

Naheed said that Benazir Bhutto had pledged to the nation to remove the 17th amendment and 58-2(B) and implement the Charter of Democracy in its true spirit.

Replying to a question, she said that under Article-248 of the constitution, the president enjoys immunity. However, she said the ministers and others facing revived cases should resign in the best interest of the party.

‘Once they get themselves acquitted from courts, the ministers can rejoin miniseries in a dignified manner,’ she said.

The senior PPP leader said the time had come for the party and the government to openly name the forces inclined to derail democracy instead of giving vague statements.

‘If PPP maintains unity within its ranks and file, no outsider force would be able of remove a democratic government’, she said.

Pakistan Modifying Its Missile, US Blamed

7a8b191702blamed Pakistan Modifying Its Missile, US BlamedNEW YORK: The Obama administration has accused Pakistan of  illegally changing American-made missiles to expand its ability to attack ground targets, which would constitute a threat to India, a U.S. newspaper reported in its Sunday edition.

Quoting senior management and congressional officials, the paper said the charge was in late June through a diplomatic protest without advertising Yusuf Raza Gilani prime minister and other senior Pakistani officials.

A senior Pakistani official called the accusation “false”, saying that the missile tested was developed by Pakistan as it had modified the design of North Korea to build a series of ground-based missiles that could strike India, according the document.

U.S. Officials said the disputed weapon is a conventional one based on the Harpoon anti-ship missiles that were sold to Pakistan during the Reagan administration as a defensive weapon, the newspaper reported, but the charges come as the Obama administration is seeking congressional approval a $ 7.5 billion aid for Pakistan over the next five years.

The charge stems from the detection of U.S. intelligence agencies of a suspected missile test on April 23, which was never announced by Pakistani officials and that apparently give a new offensive weapon, the report said.

U.S. military and Pakistani intelligence officials suspected of modifying the Harpoon they sell in the 1980s, which would violate the Law on Control of Arms Exports.

Pakistan denied the accusations and said the missile was developed.

“The focus of our concern is that this is an unauthorized modification of a potential maritime anti-ship defensive to an offensive capacity of land-attack missile,” another senior administration official told the newspaper, speaking on condition of anonymity on information classified.
