LOS ANGELES: Rapper Eminem, riding high on the comeback trail after spending several years battling drug addiction, led the field of Grammy contenders on Wednesday with 10 nominations.

Other leading nominees for the major music awards included rising RB star Bruno Mars with seven nods, while rapper Jay-Z, flamboyant pop star Lady Gaga and country group Lady Antebellum picked up six nominations each.

Canadian teen idol Justin Bieber, mobbed by young girls everywhere as one of the hottest new commodities in the music world, led a strong international field for best new artist. He will compete for the coveted award alongside a compatriot, rapper Drake; two British bands, Florence The Machine and Mumford Sons; and American jazz singer Esperanza Spalding.

Winners in all 109 categories will be announced during ceremonies in Los Angeles on February 13.

Rock bands were largely missing from the leading categories, as pop, hip-hop and country artists grabbed the spotlight.

Indie Montreal-based band Arcade Fire will fly the flag for the rock genre in the album of the year race. Its third release, “The Suburbs,” will vie for the Grammys” top honor with Eminem”s “Recovery,” Lady Antebellum”s “Need You Now,” Lady Gaga”s “The Fame Monster” and pop singer Katy Perry”s “Teenage Dream.”

Songs nominated for record of the year, a category that honors the artist and the producer, were “Nothin” On You,” by rapper B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars; “Love The Way You Lie,” by Eminem featuring RB singer Rihanna; “F*** You,” by funk singer Cee Lo Green; “Empire State Of Mind,” by rapper Jay-Z RB singer Alicia Keys; and “Need You Now,” by Lady Antebellum.

Three of those songs — Eminem”s “Love the Way You Lie,” Green”s “F*** You” and Lady Antebellum”s “Need You Now” — were also cited for song of the year, a songwriter”s award. The field was rounded out by “Beg Steal Or Borrow” performed by singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne, and “The House That Built Me,” performed by country singer Miranda Lambert.

EMINEM COMEBACK STRIKES CHORD

Grammy voters love to reward artists making career comebacks, especially if they have overcome an addiction or other personal setbacks along the way, and Eminem fulfills those criteria.

The rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, went almost five years between studio albums. He spent much of his time holed up in his Detroit home battling an addiction to prescription medication, and nearly died of a methadone overdose in 2007.

Eminem returned to the limelight in May 2009 with “Relapse,” one of the biggest sellers of the year. It also won two Grammys in January, bringing his career tally to 11.

He returned in June this year with “Recovery,” which spawned two chart-topping singles, “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie.” The latter tune revolved around a dysfunctional relationship and struck a chord with women, a demographic hitherto underrepresented among Eminem”s fan base. It spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. Hot 100 chart during the summer.

He has never won the album of the year award, and famously lost the race in 2001 to an unheralded album by veteran rock duo Steely Dan.

Bruno Mars, whose real name is Peter Hernandez, reached the top of the Hot 100 with “Just the Way You Are” in September, days after he was arrested on a cocaine charge in Las Vegas. The song marked his first charting single as a lead artist and it spent four weeks at No. 1. He previously went to No. 1 in May as the featured artist on B.o.B”s “Nothin” On You.”

JERUSALEM: Tens of thousands of Palestinians lined up at West Bank checkpoints early on Friday morning, waiting to be granted access to the holy city of Jerusalem for prayer on the second Friday of Ramadan.

Visits to the Noble Sanctuary, which houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem remain restricted.

Pilgrims that made it through the West Bank separation fence were greeted by heavy Israeli military and police presence around the Old City, and had to pass through dozens of secondary checkpoints installed in the area. The secondary points double check documents of Palestinians heading for worship, preventing all men under 50 and women under 45 without special permits from entering the area.

The policy of limiting Palestinian and Muslim access to the mosque was marked, as worshipers observed the

b50d1bb00elarge pants on the groundWednesday night was more about Simon Cowell relationship with Paula Abdul than about the finale of American Idol of Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze.

The most delightful moment was when “Pants on the Ground” was done for us. I just love that man General Larry Platt. He belted it out for us, and then, back to Simon Cowell’s tribute. The tribute took up most of American Idol tonight, and made what should have been a 30 44386d3fd1699900 pants on the groundminute show, a two hour lesson in boredom.

However, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell had a great time riding down memory lane with us dragging behind. Randy Jackson stood and applauded for Simon Cowell as ridiculous Ryan Seacreast told him to sit down. I’m not kidding.

Paula explained she wasn’t having fun anymore, but I have to admit, the re-runs of her fighting with Simon were funny. Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul are a wonderful team, and after tonight, I have no doubt why “American Idol” is falling pants on the ground

Study Ahows More Evidence Of Water On Moon And Mars

56d35e38fcd mars Study Ahows More Evidence Of Water On Moon And MarsIce deposits at least 6 feet thick can be found in some small craters on the moon, researchers reported in one of two studies showing more evidence of water on the moon and Mars.

The second study suggested that ice has recently melted and re-frozen on Mars, widening some of the characteristic gullies on its surface.

In one of the two studies, Paul Spudis of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston and colleagues analyzed measurements from India’s Chandrayaan spacecraft to find evidence of thick ice deposits in some permanently shaded craters on the moon.

“As the moon has been bombarded with water-bearing objects such as comets and meteorites and implanted with solar wind hydrogen over geological time, some of this material must have made its way into these cold, dark areas,” they wrote in Geophysical Research Letters.

They measure something called circular polarization ratio to show either the surface there is unusually rough, or there are between 6 and 10 feet of ice there.

The second study showed that 6-foot (2-meter) wide gully on Mars had become nearly 400 feet longer over two years.

Dennis Reiss of the Institute for Planetology at Westfalische Wilhelms-Universitat in Munster, Germany, and colleagues said the best explanation is the melting of small amounts of water ice.

Photographs show dark patches in the gully, as well as some smaller, new channels, they reported in the same journal. It may get warm enough at the surface to melt water on Mars, they added.
In September, several teams reported clear evidence of water, likely frozen, on the desert surfaces of both the moon and Mars and researchers have also seen it snow on Mars.

14 Tombs And A Mummy Found, Dating Back To The 3rd Century BC

d7d1fb9736ury bc 14 Tombs And A Mummy Found, Dating Back To The 3rd Century BCEgyptian archaeologists carrying out excavations at the site of a planned youth center have found 14 tombs dating back to the third century BC, including one with a female mummy adorned with jewelry.

The Greco-Roman tombs, in Bahariya Oasis, 300 km (190 miles) southwest of Cairo, were discovered during probes that indicated they may be part of a much larger necropolis, Egypt’s Culture Ministry said in a statement Monday.

A 97-cm (38-inch) tall female mummy, found in the stair-lined interior of one of the rock-hewn tombs, was cast in colored plaster inlaid with jewelry and eyes.

Archaeologists, who dug at the site ahead of the planned construction of a youth center, found the tombs contained other treasures as well. The area has now been turned over to Egypt’s antiquities authority.

“Early investigations uncovered four anthropoid masks made of plaster, a gold fragment decorated with engravings of the four sons of Horus, and a collection of coins, and clay and glass vessels,” the ministry’s statement quoted Egypt’s chief archaeologist Zahi Hawass as saying.

The four sons of Horus — Imsety, Duamutef, Hapi and Qebehsenuef — were ancient Egyptian gods. The engravings show the influence of Egyptian religion well into the Greco-Roman period.

The gods were believed to protect the stomach, liver, intestines and lungs of mummified bodies.

Bahariya Oasis is home to Egypt’s famed Valley of the Golden Mummies, where a collection of 17 tombs with about 254 mummies was discovered in 1996.

baaab8e490opez 5 george lopez Late-night mainstay Conan O’Brien is headed to TBS to resume his comedic duties with a talk show expected to debut in November, the network said Monday.

The program will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern, shifting TBS’ “Lopez Tonight,” starring George Lopez, to midnight.

O’Brien quickly fired out a celebratory tweet.

“The good news: I will be doing a show on TBS starting in November! The bad news: I’ll be playing Rudy on the all new Cosby Show,” he posted Monday on Twitter.

The surprise announcement hit the same day O’Brien starts a two-month, nationwide comedy tour in Eugene, Ore., amid persistent reports that he was likely to claim Fox as his new late-night home.

Barring Fox, syndication was widely considered O’Brien’s most likely option. Few if anyone mentioned TBS as a plausible destination.

O’Brien began serious talks with TBS just last week, the network said.

“In three months, I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable,” O’Brien said in a tongue-in-cheek-toned statement. “My plan is working perfectly.”

O’Brien left NBC in January after hosting “The Tonight Show” for just eight months, as his ratings plunged from those of his longtime “Tonight” predecessor, Jay Leno, who reclaimed the hour. Until last June, O’Brien had followed Leno as host of “Late Night” since 1993.

After giving O’Brien “Tonight,” NBC sought to keep Leno on board with a prime-time show that quickly flopped. An attempt to move O’Brien to a post-midnight slot drew O’Brien’s ire, and he walked away with a $32 million settlement package.

Although that put him in play for other networks, the deal barred him from appearing on TV until September
