161df882c3large dallas bradenDallas Braden, unplugged: A’s pitcher rips into Yankees star Alex Rodriguez
Alex Rodriguez doesn’t remember doing it and Joe Girardi didn’t see it.

But in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 4-2 loss on the Thursday, A’s pitcher Dallas Braden accused Rodriguez of jogging over the mound while on the way back to first base following a Robinson Cano foul ball, which in the pitcher’s mind violated an unwritten rule.

Braden said Rodriguez should have jogged around the mound, instead of stepping on the pitching rubber, a transgression that prompted Braden to go all Gran Torino.

Braden twice yelled at the Yankees star on the field — immediately after the play happened and then after Cano bounced into a double play to end the sixth inning — before excoriating him in a clubhouse interview.

“I don’t care if I’m Cy Young or if I’m the 25th man on the roster,” Braden said. “If I’ve got that ball in my hand and I’m out there on that mound, that’s not your mound. If you want to run across the mound, go run laps in the bullpen. That’s my mound.”

Rodriguez greeted Braden’s objections with indifference.

“He just told me to get off his mound,” Rodriguez said. “I was a little surprised. I’ve never heard that, especially from a guy with a handful of wins in his career.”

Braden, who at one point during his on-field blow-up had to be restrained by A’s manager Bob Geren, fired back.

“He’s right, I don’t even have a handful of wins,” said Braden, who improved to 3-0 this season, career victory No. 17. “I have three. Do the math A-Rod.”

The A’s lefty followed with another brushback.

“He should just maybe watch his captain a little more often,” Braden said, alluding to Derek Jeter. “It doesn’t start and end with him over there at third.”

Rodriguez dismissed Braden’s issue.

“It’s not really a big deal,” he said. “I didn’t know he was talking to me. I thought it was pretty funny actually… I’ve never heard of that in my career.”

Said Braden: “Well, now he has, you know? I don’t go over there and run laps at third base. I don’t go over there. I don’t spit over there. I don’t spit over there. I stay away. You guys ever see anybody run across the mound like that? He ran across the pitcher’s mound, foot on my rubber. No. Not flyin.”

It’s not the first time Rodriguez has been accused of so-called “bush league” behavior. Rodriguez drew criticism for slapping the ball out of Bronson Arroyo’s hand in Game 6 of the 2004 the American League Championship Series. In 2007, the Blue Jays objected when Rodriguez yelled to distract fielders from catching an infield fly.

Despite his anger, Braden said the issue wouldn’t linger. The Yankees play the A’s in two more series this season.

“It’s over and done with as far as I’m concerned,” Braden said. “Like I said, the guy’s a first ballot Hall of Famer. I’m sure he’s moved on already but I’d like to think an impression was made and that he could honor and respect the game and our team and our club and what we’re trying to do a little more next time.”
