KARACHI: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has revealed said that a covert operation has been launched against criminals in the aftermath of latest killing spree in Karachi.
Speaking to newsmen at Jinnah International Airport today (Saturday), he said the government has achieved enormous successes against terrorism.
âWe shout not forget that our enemy is fully active in Karachi,â he commented.
The Interior Minister said security has been beefed up around Shershah scrap market with the establishment of 28 police and rangers posts.
Responding to a question, Malik said: âWe have very good ties with MQM. I speak to Altaf Hussain on almost every alternate day and to Governor Ishratul Ebad on daily basis.â

Geoâs reporter Anwar hurt in Hyderabad ambush
HYDERABAD: Unknown assailant(s) opened fire at Geo Newsâ van, injuring reporter Anwar Kamal and driver Naseem seriously here at Thandi Sarak, Geo News reported late Saturday.
Two were rushed to a local hospital where they are being provided medical aid.
According to details, Anwar Kamal along driver Naseem was on his way to Hyderabad on Geoâs van after covering a news event relating to Dadu-Manchar Lake, when unknown gunmen on motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire at van.
The ambush took place in front of GOR police station, a woman police station, but the assailants could not be identified who, all of a sudden, succeeded to flee the crime scene, sources said.
Anwar Kamal received a bullet on his left shoulder, hospital sources confirmed to media.
DIG Hyderabad Fayyaz Laghari said security at all the cityâs entrance and exit points has been beefed up.

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif gave assurance to Lahore High Court Bar for the provision of financial resources to meet Barâs expenses and also a housing scheme, Geo News reported Monday.
Talking to office-bearers of LHC Bar in a meeting at CM House, he announced to construct an IT Lab for lawyersâ convenience.
According to the official statement, the CM Sharif also fell in with providing free medical facilities to the lawyers.
On the occasion, Sharif directed immediate steps for the extension of the LHC Barâs hall.
The meeting also decided that the committee headed by the Law Minister would take stock of all the proposals in concert with the LHC Barâs office-bearers, to present them in finalized form within seven days.
A forensic lab established in the province, the best in South Asia, would start functioning from October, he added.
10 killed in Orakzai offensive
PARACHINAR: Ten militants were killed and six others wounded during security forces offensive in different areas of Orakzai Agency.
Sources said security forces killed 10 militants and wounded six others during ongoing operation against militants in different areas of Orakzai.
Meanwhile, fighter jets pounded militantsâ positions in Jabba area destroying five hideouts as search operation is underway in the area.

PESHAWAR: Eight militants were killed and six others wounded during security forces operation in different areas of Orakzai Agency.
Sources said security forces killed eight militants and injured six others during an operation in upper Orakzai. Two militants dens were also destroyed during the action.
More than 1300 militants have been killed and over 40 training center of militancy have been destroyed so far in an ongoing offensive against militants in the area.

Valiant Armed Forces Saluted By PM and President On Defence Day
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan faces a security threat from the Taliban and all such designs against the country’s integrity will be foiled, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Saturday.
In his message to the nation on Defence Day, President Zardari said, “We will eliminate the Taliban and those who have challenged the foundations of the state. Let there be no doubt about it.”
He said the threats from the Taliban and extremists were a challenge for the country and its foundations.
Referring to September 6, he said the day would always be remembered as a memorable day, adding, “On this day, we salute the courage and heroism of our forces and pay homage to our martyrs.”
Zardari said the armed forces â backed by national consensus and the power of the people â had once again taken the Taliban head on.
President Zardari paid tribute to the brave people of Swat and Malakand who had endured hardships.
In his message on Defence Day, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said the nation needed to exhibit the spirit of sacrifice of the 1965 war to confront terrorism.
“We will use all our capabilities to its optimum and overcome the challenges we face today,” the prime minister.
Gilani said Pakistan was facing with the threat of terrorism and the entire nation was supporting the armed forces, as they had in 1965.
“Pakistan demands the same spirit of sacrifice and valour which the entire nation and the valiant armed forces had shown during the â65 war,” he said.
“The way our gallant officers and men have fought against terrorists is unprecedented,” he added.
The prime minister said the country’s law enforcing agencies has wiped out the Taliban from Swat and Malakand, and also provided invaluable services for the rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons.
“The nation will always remember the sacrifices of the Pakistani armed forces,” he added.
He said Defence Day reminded Pakistanis of the resolve and enthusiasm displayed by the country’s armed forces along with the nation while defending the country during the 1965 war, and to pay tribute to the martyrs and warriors.
President Asif Ali Zardari has said that militants have been “almost cleared” from the northwest of the country and they were on the run, Geo news reported Saturday.
“Militants are on the run as Swat and Malakand have almost been cleared of them. This huge success in the battle for the integrity of Pakistan has been made possible by the sacrifices of our armed forces and the people,” Zardari said in his message to the country on the eve of Defence Day September 6.
“We will eliminate the militants and those who have challenged the foundations of the state. Let there be no doubt or mistake about it,” he added.
“We are confronted with the menace of terrorism. In the decisive war against terrorism, the entire nation is supporting our armed forces. Our law-enforcing agencies have wiped out the terrorists from Swat and Malakand region,” said Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in his separate message.

Operation In Khyber Agency 63 Militants Killed
BARA: At least 63 militants were killed and several others injured in a military operation in Tirah valley and Kambarkhel areas of Khyber Agency on Saturday, said security sources.
Troops pounded Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) bases in Gogrina and Sandapal areas of Tirah valley. An LI centre â being used as a hideout and training facility â was destroyed, and at least 63 militants killed in that attack.
The sources said six militants were killed in Kambarkhel area of the Bara tehsil, while two suspects were arrested from Shakas area. They said 15 houses were also demolished in Kambarkhel area of Khyber Agencyâs Bara tehsil.

Security Forces Targeted To Militants Hideout In North Waziristan
MIRANSHAH: Ten persons wounded when security forces with heavy artillery targeted militantsâ hideouts in North Waziristan as many areas are under curfew.
Sources said security forces pounded militants positions with heavy artillery in Asadkhel area. Ten persons wounded in the action. The power supply to large area has been suspended when a shell hit main line of electricity.
On the other hand, political administration imposed indefinite curfew in capital of North Waziristan Miranshah, Mir Ali, Boya Datakhel, Ghulam Khan, Dosli, Garyoum and Razmak areas.
