LAHORE: At least 28 people were killed and scores of others wounded after three suicide bombs ripped through a Youm-e-Ali procession in Lahore on Wednesday.
Children and women are also among the dead.
The bombs exploded at three separate sites as thousands of mourners marched the streets of inner Lahore in their traditional mourning procession to mark Youm-e-Ali.
The dead and injured were shifted to Mayo and Ganga Ram hospitals.
Speaking to SAMAA, DCO Sajjad Bhutta admitted a security lapse.
In a statement, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the blast, saying the attackers would not escape justice.
Earlier, unknown gunmen ambushed a Youm-e-Ali procession in Karachi, injuring six people.
The bombings came after Pakistan army jets and helicopters targeted militant hideouts near the Afghan border,
Five Dead in Lahore Blast
LAHORE, Pakistan News: At least four people were killed and 22 injured in a powerful blast in Lahore area of Model Town, which seemed to have targeted a government office.
The deceased include two men and three women.
According to police sources, the security guard intercepted a man entering the building of a secret agency, who blew him up destroying the entire building.
The blast sound was heard far and wide. The blast was so powerful that it created a huge 20 to 30-foot crater on the blast site and the nearby buildings were harmed.
A secret agency office was targeted at 815am near the seminary of Dr Israr Ahmed in K Block of Model town.
The blast razed the building to ground. The injured are being taken out from under the rubble. Of the 22 injured, four are in critical state.
There are 13 women among the injured.
Ambulances, police and other rescue teams are busy with rescue work.
An eyewitness, standing on his rooftop near the blast area, said he could watch the smokes billowing from the blast site.

3 women among eleven killed while 61 others injured as a suicide bomber struck outside an intelligence office in Block K, Model Town, Lahore.
DCO Sajjad Bhutta confirmed that it was a suicide attack, and added that the intelligence office was targeted. The intelligence office building got completely damaged, while a 20 to 30 feet deep crater has been emerged. The blast was so powerful that its bang was heard miles away from the site, whereas many cars parked over there damaged and glasses of nearby building also got shattered. Smoke engulfed the whole area. According to sources, the adjacent Dr Israr Ahmed’s mosque and academy also damaged. Rescue efforts have been kicked off and ambulances rushed the scene and the injured are being shifted to hospitals. Security forces threw cordon around the area.
Talking to media, DCO Bhutta said that the toll could not be ascertained, adding that the injured are being retrieved from the rubble. He said that around seventy people were present at the blast site, while 600kg explosives were used in the incident. It merits to mention that two years ago on March, 11 2008, a suicide bomber struck the same Model Town besides two other places in the city.
