Coffee addiction ‘in your genes’

Coffee buffs, you can now blame your genes for downing another cup of the hot beverage, for a new study has claimed that genetic factors could explain why some people consume large amounts of caffeine.
Researchers scanned genetic variations in over 40,000 individuals to search for links with high caffeine intake. And they found two stretches of DNA associated with high intake of tea, coffee, chocolate, softdrinks and other caffeine sources.
Study author Dr Neil Caporaso of the National Cancer Institute in Maryland, said people with the high consumption genetic variation consume more caffeine — about 40 mg – or a third of a cup of coffee or a can of cola — than others.
“There are hundreds of genes known for specific medical conditions – for dietary consumption we know very little. Now, for the first time, we know specific genes that influence the amount of caffeine that individuals consume,” he was quoted as saying by the BBC .
The two stretches of DNA linked with high caffeine consumption contain two genes thought highly likely to be involved in the way the body processes caffeine.
The study s co-author, Dr Marilyn Cornelis of the Harvard School of Public Health, said there has always been some anecdotal evidence that everyone responds differently to caffeine, but most research has focused on environmental factors. “For caffeine at last we have been able to find some genetic factors.”
Lack of sleep ups risk of colon cancer

Lack of sleep has been already linked with higher risks of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and death.
Researchers from University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine found that individuals who averaged less than six hours of sleep at night had an almost 50 per cent increase in the risk of colorectal adenomas compared with individuals sleeping at least seven hours per night.
Adenomas are a precursor to cancer tumours, and left untreated, they can turn malignant. “A short amount of sleep can now be viewed as a new risk factor for the development of the development of colon cancer,” said Li Li, the study s principal investigator.
In the study, patients were surveyed by phone prior to coming into the hospital for scheduled colonoscopies at UH Case Medical Center.
They were asked demographic information as well as questions from the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which obtains information about the patient s overall sleep quality during the past month.
The PSQI asks for such information as how frequently one has trouble sleeping and how much sleep one has had per night.
Of the 1,240 patients, 338 were diagnosed with colorectal adenomas at their colonoscopy. The patients with adenomas were found in general to have reported sleeping less than six hours compared to those patients without adenomas (control) patients.
The researchers also found a slightly stronger association of sleep duration with adenomas with women compared to men, but the difference was not statistically significant.

The boy got on the bus at his home in the morning but did not show up for school. After dropping the children off, the bus driver returned to the bus company’s transport lot but did not notice that the one young passenger was still on board.
“The bus was parked far away and wasn’t very visible from the office,” police spokesperson Torsten Wendt was quoted saying. It was only when his mother anxiously called the authorities that boy’s disappearance was noticed.
After hours of searching, the boy was found on the bus later that night in reasonably good spirits even though the temperature had climbed to 30 degrees Celsius. He was found lying shirt-less on the floor under the seats. He even rationed his school-lunch so that it might last all night.

One of Hollywood’s golden teen couples has finally cut their ties. Yes folks, I’m talking about Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens here. Last Monday, news spread that the two have finally ended their three-year romantic involvement.
Efron, 23, and Hudgens 22 started going out when they were still filming Disney’s hit High School Musical. According to some sources, there is no dramatic reason behind the splitting of the two such as third parties. This is despite the pushes that Zac is receiving from friends advising him to ‘play the field’ while at his prime of his age and career. However, the handsome hunk proved to be more of the monogamist, saying that he is not really into that kind of thing.
So what is the reason behind the splitting up?
According to a close friend of the two, the two grew apart after being together for too long. There was a strain on their relationship after years of being a couple. Fortunately, both stars claimed that they are still friends and are still on good speaking terms.
Zac is currently filming his latest project The Lucky One in New Orleans while Vanessa is just wrapping up her own film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island in Hawaii.

PESHAWAR: A Pakistani court Thursday ordered a married pupil back to school, saying that tying the knot was no grounds for expulsion despite teachers’ fears of gossip.
Ghairat Khan, a seventh grader with a beard, was thrown out of an elite English-language school in the northwestern city of Peshawar seven months ago because teachers believed marital relations were inappropriate playground talk.
“The court reinstated Ghairat Khan and he will rejoin school tomorrow. The board of directors at the school has been ordered to submit an explanation by December 15,” court official Musaddiq Hussain Gilani told AFP.
Khan, whose school record says he was born in April 1997 but who told AFP he was 18 years old, attended classes at Peshawar Model School with 12 and 13-year-old boys.
“I am very happy,” Khan told AFP.
