CS Sindh issues directives to cope flood, rain situation

KARACHI: Chief Secretary Sindh Fazal-ur-Rehman has emphasized upon the Relief Commissioner, concerned administrative secretaries, Provincial Director Management Authority (PDMA) and all DCOs in Sindh to remain high alert in view of expected flood situation in Indus River.

Fazal-ur-Rehman maintained that all out efforts must be accorded to cope with expected flood, by strengthening and extending coordination and cooperation mutually as well, facilitating the affectees including the inhabitants of katcha areas and lower areas/coastal areas.

He noted that provision of food/ residential facilities including medical aid and assistance through respective points and hospitals/dispensaries, RHCs/BHUs must be arranged to the satisfaction of affectees.

The Chief Secretary also advised the secretaries and DCOs to maintain liaison with departments responsible for provision of water and sewerage and electricity facilities.

He added that rain/flood emergency centers and control rooms should also be activated 24 hours.

He also advised for adequate traffic arrangements to facilitate the people and ensure smooth flow of the traffic.

Eight killed in Swat road accident

SWAT: Eight people were killed and 40 wounded in an accident at Swat-Malakand Road on Monday.

According to police, a bus bound for Karachi met a head on collision with a flying coach traveling from Peshawar to Swat. Five people were killed on the spot. The injured were rushed to Batkhela hospital.

Aman ki Asha: Pak delegation reaches New Delhi

NEW DELHI (Mahmood Sham): A Pakistani delegation has reached New Delhi on Monday to take part in a business seminar organized by Jang Group and Times of India under “ Aman ki Asha”.

The seminar will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Indian capital. More than 40 prominent businessmen and heads of multi national companies are part of Pakistani delegation. Key Indian industrialists and traders will attend the seminar.

Rehman Malik could be arrested: law experts

LAHORE: The sentences given by an accountability court against Interior Minister Rehman Malik stand restored after his appeals were rejected by the Lahore High Court (LHC) Monday.

According to law experts, the interior minister could be arrested if he failed to acquire bail from the court.

Speaking to Geo on phone, Justice (r) Wajih uddin said Rehman Malik has the right to go to Supreme Court against the LHC verdict.

The retried justice said Malik would continue to hold his office if succeeded to get a stay order and bail from the apex court.

Legal expert S M Zafar said he would have to apply again for bail, failing which he could be arrested and sent to jail.

SC orders for completing registration of labours

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court today reprimanded federal labour secretary for non-implementation of labour laws in the country and asked provincial secretaries to complete registration of labours in four weeks and sought replies from them in this regard.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Javed Iqbal was hearing a suo motu case regarding non-implementation of labour policy.

Justice Javed expressed dissatisfaction over the conditions of labour. He reprimanded labour secretaries of Sindh and the Punjab who were present in the courtroom.

Government not seemed interested in bringing any positive change in this regard and on May Day only lip service is done, Justice Javed remarked.

Govt accepts Aaqil Mirza”s resignation

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the secretaries of ministries of Law and Justice, Interior and the Chairman of National Accountability Bureau to appear before it on Friday and apprise it over certain queries regarding implementation of its December 16, 2009 verdict on annulling the National Reconciliation Ordinance.

A larger bench comprising Justice Nasir ul Mulk, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed, Justice Jawwad S. Khawja, Justice Tariq Parvez and Justice Rehmat Hussain Jafferi resumed hearing of a suo motu case taken on its previous orders.

Justice Nasir ul Mulk asked Attorney General of Pakistan Maulvi Anwar ul Haq about the presence of Law Secretary and said his resignation had not been accepted yet and he should be here to answer certain queries pertaining to Swiss cases.

The government then accepted the resignation of Secretary Law after the SC summoned him.

A notification has also been released in this regard. The federal secretary law tendered his resignation last Friday.

Justice Mulk observed that since he had mentioned in his statement that there was no further need to correspond with the Swiss authorities over these cases, therefore, he should have attended today”s proceedings.

To bench”s query the AG informed the court that the Law Secretary was recuperating from surgery and was unwell besides, he had tendered resignation.

Additional Attorney General for Pakistan K.K. Agha submitted a 96-page fact finding report of a special committee formed over promotion of Ahmed Riaz Sheikh, former FIA official and an NRO beneficiary.

The bench told him that he should have filed the report earlier.

Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed also questioned further progress on the implementation of the NRO decision and said who would be responsible for its implementation.

On last hearing, the Secretary of Law and Justice Division had submitted a statement in which he said that the chapter of Swiss cases had been closed and no communication was required with the Swiss government for their re-opening.

The meeting will be held on Friday and attended by the Chief Ministers of all the four provinces, Chief Secretary, Federal and Provincial Interior Ministers, Provincial Chief Secretaries, Home Secretaries and Police Chiefs. A strategy to cope with the terrorism will be outlined in the meeting.

The meeting, convened after attacks on security forces and educational institutions, would review closure of educational institutions besides measures to protect them from terrorist attacks in future. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will be briefed about the present security situation across the country.

According to British and Indian media reports Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna will discuss resumption of the composite dialogue between the two countries, border disputes and other contentious issues.

Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and Indian external affairs secretary Niropama Rao held a meeting at a hotel in New York prior to the secretaries level talks.

According to Indian television the secretaries discussed the agenda of the foreign ministers meeting, water dispute and Pakistan action against Mumbai attacks accused.
