CALIFORNIA: Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga take charity work seriously, and they’re going offline to prove it.
Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Usher and other celebrities have joined a new campaign called Digital Life Sacrifice on behalf of Keys’ charity, Keep a Child Alive. The entertainers plan to sign off of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday, which is World AIDS Day. The participants will sign back on when the charity raises $1 million.
“It’s really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on,” Keys said in a phone interview from New York last week.
For the campaign — which also includes Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams, Janelle Monae and Keys’ husband, Swizz Beatz — celebrities have filmed “last tweet and testament” videos and will appear in ads showing them lying in

Four-time champ Henin crashed out of French Open
PARIS: Justine Henin’s hopes of a fifth French Open title vanished with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 fourth-round defeat by Australian seventh seed Sam Stosur on Monday.
Henin, a four-time champion returning to the game after a 20-month stint in retirement, looked set to canter through after sealing the opening set in 32 minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen. But Stosur, a semifinalist last year, ripped through the second and although she let slip an early break in the decider she broke the Henin serve once again for a 5-4 lead and served out for the match, sealing it in an hour and 46 minutes with a confident overhead.
Stosur showed a touch of nerves when delivering a double fault, one of seven in the match, on her first match point but she made no mistake with the second.
Henin left to a standing ovation from the crowd but it will be Stosur who faces American top seed Serena Williams for a place in the semifinals.
Henin said that she had felt more nervous and uncomfortable on court than usual having played for five straight days because of a succession of rain delays.

Serena Williams wins, Roddick loses at French Open
PARIS — Serena Williams looked ill, and not only because she had lost five games in a row at the French Open.
A trainer paid Williams a visit during a changeover, checked her temperature and gave her pills. Then came a third-set surge, and Williams beat 18-year-old Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Saturday, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
There was no prescription to help Andy Roddick, who lost to qualifier Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Roddick threw rackets and argued with the umpire, but the fits of temper failed to produce a turnaround against an opponent ranked 114th.
The top-ranked Williams appeared in danger when she fell behind 5-love in the second set and summoned the trainer. Soon Williams’ court movement improved, her strokes steadied and she advanced to the fourth round.
The seesaw win assured Williams of retaining the No. 1 ranking after the tournament.
Top-seeded American twins Bob and Mike Bryan were upset in the second round of doubles by unseeded Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
On a cloudy, windy, chilly day, the center-court stadium was slow to fill for Williams’ match, the first on the schedule.
Her aggressive returns had Pavlyuchenkova’s serve under constant pressure early, but the talented young Russian — a three-time Grand Slam champion in juniors — suddenly reversed the momentum in the second set.
Williams began to look sluggish during points, took her time between them and occasionally grimaced, while Pavlyuchenkova’s booming groundstrokes had her on the defensive.
But in the third set, Williams erased three break points to take the lead for good at 2-1. She again became aggressive with her returns, and whacked the last one at Pavlyuchenkova’s feet for the win.
She ended a nine-game losing streak by saving break point in game five but she was just delaying the inevitable, dropping serve again to Williams, who has only once failed to reach the last 32 of a grand slam.

Hobbling Kimiko Date Krumm leads charge of old brigade to beat Safina

Women’s tennis for a long time was the poppets’ playground. Not any more. Today Britain’s Katie O’Brien, just turned 24, was bundled out of the French Open by a 35-year-old American whose career ambitions are directed now towards film production; and Dinara Safina, a finalist here 12 months ago, went out to a 39-year-old Japanese veteran who finished the match hobbling on a strapped right leg.
O’Brien’s 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 loss to Jill Craybas left her “a bit numb”, but, given that the Californian is best remembered for beating Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2005 it was not such a disgrace. O’Brien played fine in the second set, rubbish at the start and finish.

However, of all the stories that will unfold at this tournament, the perplexing yet weirdly predictable exit of Safina deserves to be near the top of page one. Few present on Court Suzanne Lenglen in the draining heat of the afternoon could believe that the enigmatic Russian, a former world No1, had lost in three troubled sets to Kimiko Date Krumm, who turns 40 in September.
Williams toned it down quite a bit after her outfit caused a stir Sunday. Oh, and she and sister Serena had no trouble in their first-round doubles match, beating Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium and Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, 6-0, 6-1.

Four-time champion Nadal beat Gianni Mina of France, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, improving to 32-1 at Roland Garros after falling in the round of 16 last year.
Roddick was frustrated at numerous points before rallying past Jarkko Nieminen in the first round, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Safina of Russia, runner-up the previous two years, lost to 39-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan,
