Heavy rains dumped on Nicaragua’s eastern coast and hundreds evacuated from Corn Island, a popular tourist spot.
At 7 a.m. EST (1200 GMT) center of Hurricane Ida was located about 60 miles (100 km) north-northeast of Bluefields and about 85 miles (135 km) south of Puerto Cabezas in Nicaragua.
The hurricane was moving toward the northwest at close to 7 mph (11 kph) and, after making landfall, will move across eastern Nicaragua and Honduras during the next couple of days, the center said.
The storm is expected to weaken as it moves over Nicaragua, but heavy rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.
Coffee producers, just starting a new harvest, are watching weather developments closely, but say their crops in the mountainous regions near the Honduran border are far from strong coastal winds.
Landslides could wash out roads to coffee farms or heavy rain could knock ripening cherries off trees, Luis Osorio, technical director at the national coffee council, said on Wednesday.
The NHC’s longer-term forecast showed Ida passing over Central America and regaining tropical storm strength by Monday off Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. That could take it into the oil and gas-rich Gulf of Mexico.

It is true that back in 2005, Sesame Street made a conscious decision to start including more programming dedicated to better health and nutrition. So while they didn’t rename Cookie Monster “Veggie Monster,” they did have him develop a liking for fruits and veggies. A Cookie is a Sometime Food was added to his repertoire of songs.

Today’s Google homepage acclaimed the 40th ceremony of Sesame Street, but, as this video reveals, Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster acclaimed Google in a song from 27 years ago. A cool fun song of the you’ll-giggle-your-socks-off variety, that is.
Yes, it came 16 years afore Google anytime existed and yes, technically the song is about Cookie Monsters googly eyes, but somehow it still sorta fits as accolade to the chase agent giant. I aloof achievement that the abutting Google homepage blow includes Cookie Monster instead of Big Bird, ’cause bluntly that one gives me the creeps.

Casino Denies Man Jackpot: Bill Seebeck thought it was the luckiest day of his life. Seebeck was playing a slot machine at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa when the machine indicated that he had won a staggering $166,666,666.65.

The joy didn’t last long, however, as the casino denied the man’s jackpot because it was caused by a machine malfunction.
According to officials at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, the maximum possible jackpot possible on the machine Bill Seebeck played was $90,000, well short of the $166 million jackpot.
This isn’t the first time this has happened. A patron at a Seminole Casino in California thought he had a $259,000 denied after officials stated it was caused by a computer error. In that case, the casino decided to pay the full amount.
As for Bill Seebeck, he was considering legal action, but it appears he has now agreed to an undisclosed “good faith” settlement from the Seminole Hard Rock Casino.

Sesame Street is gearing up for its 40th anniversary season in a big way. Not only is Big Bird featured on the Google Doodle today, but the show is saying it will be “updated” for the anniversary season, which starts Nov.

It’s funny — as much as kids love Sesame Street, I think they also reject it pretty quickly as they reach the age of, say, 5.
Mine aren’t even willing to be nostalgic about it. In fact, to tease them every once in a while, I talk in Elmo’s voice and ask them to pleeeeeze come back. They have a great time running away from “Elmo” and up to their Pokemon cards and R.L. Stine books.

Anniversary of Sesame Street, 2009 will mark the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. To celebrate the historic occasion, Sesame Workshop is planning to launch two brand new books that have a fond look back at the incredible story of the world’s most famous street. 
“Sesame Street: A Celebration of forty years of street life” by Louise Gikow is a hardcover book of 256 pages that provides an inside look at every aspect of Sesame Street – beginning with the initial idea of showing the and the creation of the pilot episode and moving through its evolution over four decades. The book also offers an inside look at many of the Muppets and human characters enjoyable and the writers, directors, producers, and all the other creative people involved in the legendary series. The book includes hundreds of rare photographs from the archives of Sesame Workshop take a historical look, both in front and behind the camera. The book also includes excerpts from the scripts, sketches of the most original and performance notes. “Sesame Street: A Celebration of forty years of life on the street” is set to be released by Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers on 1 November 2008 – and you can pre-order your copy at Amazon.com.
Viking Press is also planning to launch another book that explores the history of Sesame Street. “Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street,” Michael Davis, will take a broad view on development, growth and continued success of the television show for children most influential for the capture of oral history beloved series. Big Bird,Google Big Bird: When opening up my Chrome browser today a pleasant smile wrapped around my face as I was instantly reminded of several of my childhood friends who not only kept me entertained from my infant years into my kindergarten years, but also helped me read, count, explore art and other cultures.
Big Bird,Google Big Bird:When opening up my Chrome browser today a pleasant smile wrapped around my face as I was instantly reminded of several of my childhood friends who not only kept me entertained from my infant years into my kindergarten years, but also helped me read, count, explore art and other cultures.
This month Sesame Street, a public television project brought to us by the Children’s Television Workshop, turns 40. And Google of all places, run by people our ages who grew up with Sesame Street also, has commemorated the event with a memorable Big Bird logo which brings instant memories of the crew including Oscar, Cookie Monster, Bob, Maria, Grover and that two headed monster who would put words together.
I find it interesting that Google is commemorating the Children’s Television Workshop during a time when the search company (well, is Google still a search company) is getting more involved in video, TV, TV advertising and could one day bring targeted underwriting to PBS and other publicly funded projects. Is there a vision or political statement in here somewhere? Could be. But for now I’ll just not worry about that, watch some Sesame Street, ponder about the relationship between Bert & Ernie, and be a kid again for a couple of minutes.
